Book excerpt: Central Europe may be perceived as a homogeneous subunit: a geographic locale that shares similar cultural traits, common histories, and a linked troubled past, and one that has embarked on a joint process of European integration in the past three decades. A closer look reveals that there are significant differences hidden in the cracks and the states of Central Europe exhibit large variety in two key elements that makes regional cooperation uniquely challenging: their strategic cultures and their relations toward Russia. Two major factors determine a state’s foreign policy and international ambition – its perception of the security environment and the capabilities it possesses. Policy experts provide an overview of how these two factors, and by extension state-level foreign policies, have varied in the post-Cold War era, up until 2019. The contributing authors in this volume take a deep dive into nine Central and Eastern European states’ policies: Austria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Serbia and Ukraine. The assessments provided in this book attempt to deconstruct the monolithic regional-level approach through the methodical study of the states of the region. This approach will be particularly useful for scholars and interested individuals who want to understand why and how individual Central European states participate in NATO and EU security and defence initiatives and policies. This book was originally published as a special issue of Defense & Security Analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Economics of Russia’s War in Ukraine provides a thorough analysis of the Russo-Ukrainian war, tracing its historical roots and exploring its multifaceted dimensions. This book emphasizes economic, geopolitical, and humanitarian impacts, highlighting Ukraine’s resilience amid challenges. At the same time, this study examines the EU’s dynamic responses to economic crises and energy transition, the consequences of the war on global trade dynamics, and the significant influence of geopolitical events on financial markets. It underscores the EU’s commitment to aiding Ukraine, enhancing its security, and increasing defence spending in response to evolving geopolitical complexities. The impact of the invasion on financial markets and the vulnerabilities of the banking sector are closely examined, highlighting the complex relationship between geopolitics and the global economy. Findings suggest that the priorities for the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine include addressing human capital and demographics, employment opportunities, environmental protection, infrastructure and housing reconstruction, security and mine clearance, waste recycling, agriculture and food security, digital transformation, social protection and healthcare, and education and research. This book therefore argues that a comprehensive, integrated approach with international support is crucial for Ukraine’s recovery and sustainable economic growth. The Economics of Russia’s War in Ukraine will be useful for scholars, students, professionals, policy makers, all interested in economics, international relations, security, and global studies, as well as all those wishing to have a thorough and clear understanding of the backdrop of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and its influence on Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the development of cooperation between the EU and NATO, two key non-state actors in the European security architecture. The work examines the relationship between the EU and NATO by focusing on the perspective of member states. Highlighting the relevance of member states’ role in shaping EU-NATO relations, it conceptualises interorganisational cooperation and develops a typology of member states based on four types: advocates, blockers, balancers and neutrals. To apply this typology and analyse member states’ specific roles, the analysis considers their foreign and security policy orientations, bilateral relationships with other member states, and contributions to both military operations, and division of labour between the two organisations. The book also examines states’ use of political strategies -- such as forum-shopping, hostage-taking and brokering -- that influence the design, evolution and practicalities of cooperation between the EU and NATO. This book will be of much interest to students of European Security and Defence Policy, international organisations, and security studies in general.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a first book-long analysis showing how the notion of ‘hybrid warfare’ was used to transform security policies and discourses in an EU/NATO country. Building on current debates in International Political Sociology, Critical Security Studies, and Critical Geopolitics, it provides a novel account of how crisis, geopolitics, uncertainty, and expertise are intertwined in the social construction of threats. Based on extensive and original empirical research of large textual archive and elite interviews in the Czech Republic and Brussels, the book shows how officials, bureaucrats, journalists, activists, and experts all participate in the reshaping of security in a new geopolitical environment. Zooming on the case of Czechia and its specific Central European context, it complements the predominantly Western-centric studies of insecurity with an account of how the liminal position on an East/West boundary influences security politics. As a first study of its kind and scope, it will be of interest to academics and students interested in Central European politics, practices and discourses of hybrid warfare, as well as critical approaches to security and geopolitics.

Book excerpt: Cybersecurity, or information technology security (I/T security), is the protection of computer systems and networks from information disclosure; theft of or damage to their hardware, software, or electronic data; as well as from the disruption or misdirection of the services they provide. The field is becoming increasingly critical due to the continuously expanding reliance on computer systems, the internet, wireless network standards such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and the growth of "smart" devices, which constitute the internet of things (IoT). Cybersecurity is also one of the significant challenges in the contemporary world, due to its complexity, both in terms of political usage and technology. Its primary goal is to ensure the dependability, integrity, and data privacy of enterprise-wide systems in an era of increasing cyberattacks from around the world. Effective Cybersecurity Operations for Enterprise-Wide Systems examines current risks involved in the cybersecurity of various systems today from an enterprise-wide perspective. While there are multiple sources available on cybersecurity, many publications do not include an enterprise-wide perspective of the research. The book provides such a perspective from multiple sources that include investigation into critical business systems such as supply chain management, logistics, ERP, CRM, knowledge management, and others. Covering topics including cybersecurity in international business, risk management, artificial intelligence, social engineering, spyware, decision support systems, encryption, cyber-attacks and breaches, ethical hacking, transaction support systems, phishing, and data privacy, it is designed for educators, IT developers, education professionals, education administrators, researchers, security analysts, systems engineers, software security engineers, security professionals, policymakers, and students.

Book excerpt: Growth slowed considerably following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, reflecting disruptions in global value chains, significant increases in energy and commodity prices, an erosion in real wages, and a necessary tightening in monetary policy. Growth is expected to pick up in 2024, led by consumption and fixed investment—as inflation fades and real income recovers—supported by net exports. Nevertheless, over the medium term, GDP is not expected to reach the levels consistent with its pre-pandemic trend. Inflation peaked in 2022 and is projected to meet its target by early 2025. Risks are tilted to the downside for activity and to the upside for inflation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is especially important for top management and other stakeholders of small and medium companies (SME or SMB). Small and medium companies are the major contributors to overall employment, the GDP of most countries, and the global economy. Recent cyberattack statistics show that SMEs are always a target for cybercriminals, posing a direct threat to the global economy if they are not protected. To understand the current scenarios in the SME segment, Dr. Shekhar Pawar conducted research to get insights into the current cybersecurity posture of each participant SME as well as the problems faced by businesses in adopting cybersecurity controls. The input from many SMEs working in different domains and from different countries helped Dr. Pawar understand the gaps that are helping cyberattacks to be successful. The top three issues identified during research were a lack of required financial investment, a lack of skilled resources, and not getting visibility into how investment in cybersecurity implementation will contribute to business growth. To address these problems, Dr. Pawar invented a new cybersecurity framework known as Business Domain Specific Least Cybersecurity Controls Implementation (BDSLCCI). It provides a tailored list of cybersecurity controls depending on the business domain of the SME, reducing costs and resources while providing a return on investment for businesses. BDSLCCI is now an AI ML-driven web platform with a few useful tools to assist companies in easily adopting it.
