Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2019 Missile Defense Review - January 2019 According to a senior administration official, a number of new technologies are highlighted in the report. The review looks at "the comprehensive environment the United States faces, and our allies and partners face. It does posture forces to be prepared for capabilities that currently exist and that we anticipate in the future." The report calls for major investments from both new technologies and existing systems. This is a very important and insightful report because many of the cost assessments for these technologies in the past, which concluded they were too expensive, are no longer applicable. Download or read book Disarming Iraq written by Hans Blix and published by Pantheon. This book was released on 2004-03-09 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The war against Iraq divided opinion throughout the world and generated a maelstrom of spin and counterspin. The man at the eye of the storm, and arguably the only key player to emerge from it with his integrity intact, was Hans Blix, head of the UN weapons inspection team. This is Dr. Blix’s account of what really happened during the months leading up to the declaration of war in March 2003. In riveting descriptions of his meetings with Tony Blair, Jacques Chirac, Colin Powell, Condoleezza Rice, and Kofi Annan, he conveys the frustrations, the tensions, the pressure and the drama as the clock ticked toward the fateful hour. In the process, he asks the vital questions about the war: Was it inevitable? Why couldn’t the U.S. and UK get the backing of the other member states of the UN Security Council? Did Iraq have weapons of mass destruction? What does the situation in Iraq teach us about the propriety and efficacy of policies of preemptive attack and unilateral action? Free of the agendas of politicians and ideologues, Blix is the plainspoken, measured voice of reason in the cacophony of debate about Iraq. His assessment of what happened is invaluable in trying to understand both what brought us to the present state of affairs and what we can learn as we try to move toward peace and security in the world after Iraq.

Book Synopsis Countering the Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction by : Thanos P Dokos
Download or read book Countering the Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction written by Thanos P Dokos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-24 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As counter-profileration is expected to become the central element in the new national security policy of the US, such actions will constitute a central element of every major international conflict in the first decades of the 21st century. One of the most important geostrategic phenomena of the past decade has been the extraordinary diffusion of war-making capabilities from the developed North to the developing South. In the eyes of some proliferant states, possessing nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) weapons would not only add to their regional stature, but would also offer an asymmetrical counter to the West’s massive superiority in conventional forces. In the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, a number of countries are assumed to possess varying levels of NBC-weapons capabilities. Reasons for concern include the fact that such weapons have been used in the past; the region’s geographic proximity to Europe and the vital interests of the West (which is prepared, under certain circumstances, to use force to protect them); the multiplicity of conflicts and other security problems; and the general instability in the region (including the spread of religious extremism). This important and timely book assesses, in detail, the accuracy of predictions, and perceptions, about a possible military threat from the Southern Mediterranean (Muslim) world; and their impact on NATO’s political and military posture. Thanos P. Doxos presents an assessment of the Alliance’s options for dealing with the problem. This book represents an invaluable, topical resource for researchers and policy makers.
Book Synopsis Getting MAD: Nuclear Mutual Assured Destruction, Its Origins and Practice by :
Download or read book Getting MAD: Nuclear Mutual Assured Destruction, Its Origins and Practice written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly 40 years after the concept of finite deterrence was popularized by the Johnson administration, nuclear Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD) thinking appears to be in decline. The United States has rejected the notion that threatening population centers with nuclear attacks is a legitimate way to assure deterrence. Most recently, it withdrew from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty, an agreement based on MAD. American opposition to MAD also is reflected in the Bush administration's desire to develop smaller, more accurate nuclear weapons that would reduce the number of innocent civilians killed in a nuclear strike. Still, MAD is influential in a number of ways. First, other countries, like China, have not abandoned the idea that holding their adversaries' cities at risk is necessary to assure their own strategic security. Nor have U.S. and allied security officials and experts fully abandoned the idea. At a minimum, acquiring nuclear weapons is still viewed as being sensible to face off a hostile neighbor that might strike one's own cities. Thus, our diplomats have been warning China that Japan would be under tremendous pressure to go nuclear if North Korea persisted in acquiring a few crude weapons of its own. Similarly, Israeli officials have long argued, without criticism, that they would not be second in acquiring nuclear weapons in the Middle East. Indeed, given that Israelis surrounded by enemies that would not hesitate to destroy its population if they could, Washington finds Israel's retention of a significant nuclear capability totally "understandable."

Book Synopsis The Strategic Implications of Biological and Chemical Weapons on Gulf Security by : Kamal A. Beyoghlow
Download or read book The Strategic Implications of Biological and Chemical Weapons on Gulf Security written by Kamal A. Beyoghlow and published by Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research. This book was released on 1999-05-30 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The characteristics and complexities surrounding the deployment of chemical and biological weapons are outlined in this study, which assesses the strategic impact of such weapons in undermining Gulf security. In isolation, such weapons are unlikely to tilt the balance of terror in the region, but in conjunction with nuclear weapons capability, these can provide awesome leverage to regional players, like Iraq, Iran, Israel, Pakistan and India. The prospect of the regional proliferation of these weapons in the twenty-first century is also analyzedin the study, which tackles several key issues, including the impact of these weapons on civilian and military targets. It also details the kind of defensive mechanisms needed for protection against possible covert attacks from non-state actors or groups. While highlighting the growing threat from missile technology and other devices, the study focuses on the need for effective non-proliferation and counter-proliferation measures by the Gulf countries. In the context of global advances in information technology, nuclear, chemical and biological weapons are likely to evolve increasingly as destabilizing factors in the Gulf. Therefore, confidence-building measures are essential and the study advocates a nuclear, biological and chemical weapon-free zone in the gulf to reduce regional tensions. It also recommends inter-state cooperation at the GCC level and inter-agency coordination at the domestic level to build a cohesive and collective system of defense against potential nuclear, biological and chemical attacks.
