This book was released on 2017-05-27 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition is the most complete and factual work ever presented, in English, about the history and techniques of Uechi Ryu Karate as well as the culture and karate of Okinawa. This wealth of historical information was painstakingly gathered by the author from personal experience and Okinawan sources for well over forty years. Intimate sources include accounts from five people who spent daily time with Kanbun Uechi during the last ten to twenty years of his life. It contains translations from more than 600 pages of the Uechi Ryu Karate Do Kihon (Master Text) and presents 1000 photographs and illustrations. Alan Dollar's experience as a former Marine Corps Sergeant, Master Karate Instructor and Kyoshi eighth degree black belt, make him the best person to write this superlative narrative. His experience of living in Okinawa and returning repeatedly, coupled with his close exposure to the key elements and persons of past and current history take the information included here to a new level. This book is enriched with a complete, Okinawan government authorized presentation of the history and lineage of the major recognized Okinawan Karate and Kobudo styles. Finally, it contains an informative historical and cultural account of Okinawa and its people. There is not a more complete presentation of Ryukyu history and martial arts than can be found between these covers.

Book excerpt: Progression is a positive trait, as long as one keeps in touch with the past and has a staple backdrop to focus or fall back on. Although the Revised Expanded Third Edition contains all the wording and photographs that are reproduced in both the first edition, as well as this Revised and Expanded Second Edition, it comparatively represents a step into what was, for these latter two books, the future. The year 2019, in which I am writing this foreword, represents respectively 30 years and 20 years into the future since the publication of these two books, so I think this faithful reproduction of the Master Version by Q&I Publications is well timed. For some readers it might bring about nostalgia, for others it might be an eye-opener into a world that is not always truthfully represented, due to commercial or other reasons. For the teachers who I interviewed and have been embodied herein, I hope this Master Version will remain a testament into how they wished to be represented for time immemorial.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karate means "empty–hand," but the one who masters this book will never be empty–handed. In fact, he will be a master of the ultimate in self–defense, for here are the martial arts fundamentals, the basic katas and techniques as taught by Robert Trias, holder of the eighth degree Black Belt. These movements and techniques are vividly brought to life by more than six hundred striking illustrations, many of them picturing Master Trias and his aides and pupils. Along with the imposing illustrations are important charts not usually found in martial arts books of this kind. The charts show the fatal and disabling points of the body and the nerve centers–for karate can be a deadly game, and those who practice it must know well the significance of the term "killer karate." For student and instructor alike, this important manual will open new dimensions, new horizons, and in the give–and–take of life will teach the properly oriented how to give much more than he takes. It will give him a new interest, a new zest for living, with the confidence that he can move mountains. Above all, it will teach him that to master others, he must first learn to master himself.

Book excerpt: TERRIBILITA is a deftly crafted multi-generational story about the family of an Italian war hero who fought alongside Garibaldi in the battles for the unification of Italy. The sins of the son scatter the family out into the harsh world; the son to the African Horn as a soldier, the grandson to a seafaring life aboard a merchant ship, and the father to a different place entirely. Set in the second half of the 19th century, this is a coming of age tale about family, love, and the redemptive power of violence. In this drum tight novel readers will encounter Bashi-Bazouk mercenaries, blackbirding pirates, Ethiopian army hordes, and historical figures of the era.

Book excerpt: Ninjutsu is the most renowned and misunderstood of all martial arts. The long history of ninjutsu is often murky; surrounded by mystery and legend. Here, for the first time, is an in-depth, factual look at the entire art of ninjutsu, including the emergence of the ninja warriors and philosophy in feudal Japan; detailed historical events; its context in the development of other schools of martial arts; and the philosophies and exercises of the school today. Based on more than ten years of study and translation of authentic Japanese texts, including many that have never before been translated, this is the most comprehensive and accurate study on the art of ninjutsu ever written outside of Japan. This ninja book includes studies of ninjutsu history, philosophy, wisdom, and presents a wide range of information from authors, historians, chronicles and scrolls in order to foster a deep understanding of this "shadowy" art. For those who train in ninjutsu, for other martial art practitioners, for historians, and for anyone with interest in Japanese feudal history or Japanese martial arts, The Ninja: Ancient Shadow Warriors of Japan shines a light on this enigmatic subject.

Book excerpt: "Outlaw Masters of Japanese Film" offers an extraordinary close-up of the hitherto overlooked golden age of Japanese cult, action and exploitation cinema from the early 1950s through to the late 1970s, and up to the present day. Having unique access to the top maverick filmmakers and Japanese genre film icons, Chris D. brings together interviews with, and original writings on, the lives and films of such transgressive directors as Kinji Fukasaku ("Battles Without Honour and Humanity"), Seijun Suzuki ("Branded to Kill") and Koji Wakamatsu ("Ecstasy of the Angels") as well as performers like Shinichi 'Sonny' Chiba ("The Streetfighter", "Kill Bill Vol. 1") and glamorous actress Meiko Kaji ("Lady Snowblood"). Bringing the story up-to-date with an overview of such Japanese 'enfants terrible' as Takashi Miike ("Audition") and Kiyoshi Kurasawa ("Cure"), this book also provides a compendium of facts and extras including filmographies, related bibliographies on genre fiction including Manga, and a section on female yakuzas. Illustrated with fantastic stills and posters from some of Japan's finest cult and action films, this is a veritable bible for fans and newcomers alike.

This book was released on 2016-12-21 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What would you like to obtain from your research and practice of an Okinawan martial art? For an academic, it would be to obtain historical and cultural facts and details. For a practitioner, it would be to gain expertise in the combative skills. If you’re interested in both, this three-volume anthology (paperback) is assembled for your convenience to facilitate your endeavors. These volumes assemble a wealth of material originally published during the two decades when the Journal of Asian Martial Arts was in print. Hundreds of pages and photographs present the richness of Okinawan martial traditions, from the original combatives to those influenced by Chinese and mainland Japanese martial art styles. The variety of topics shown in the table of contents indicate the depth and breath in the chapters, along with the authors who are well-known for their meticulous research and practical skills in specific arts. These three volumes dive deep into the history and culture of Okinawan martial arts. You’ll find coverage of the actual artifacts—the material culture related to weaponry and training methods. Instructions from the masters details both open-hand techniques as well as with weapons. The chapters offer insights into the lives of many masters over the past few centuries, giving the raison d’être for these unique fighting arts—their reason for being. Many streams of arts have contributed to the martial traditions found on the small island: Naha-te, Shuri-te, Fukien White Crane, Shorin, Goju, Motobu, Shotokan, Isshin, Kyokushin, Pwang Gai Noon, Shito, Uechi, and the list continues… “Along with the various styles come the associated training methods, such as conditioning exercises with weights and creatively designed apparatus, such as the punching post (makiwara), or stone lever and stone padlockshaped weights. Some become battle-hardened by active and passive breaking of objects (tameshiwari), including wooden boards, baseball bats, rocks, and ice. The extensive use of weaponry is found in many Okinawan styles, often associated with their farming and fishing occupations. Such a blend of history and culture make the Okinawan fighting traditions a fascinating field of study. Besides being such vital sources of information, these three volumes will prove enjoyable reading and permanent at-hand reference sources in your library.
