A cross-sectional survey measuring STS, primary and secondary trauma exposure, organizational and social support factors, as well as demographic and work-related factors, was completed by 376 national staff from 21 humanitarian organizations in northern Uganda. Results indicated that personal exposure to war-trauma, hearing about war-trauma from personal acquaintances, and hearing trauma stories from beneficiaries each accounted for unique variance in STS. Results support a dose-response relationship between listening to trauma stories and STS symptoms in national aid workers. Additionally, results indicated inverse relationships between STS and supervision, and STS and co-worker team cohesion. Organizational implications are discussed.

Book excerpt: Several terms have been developed, including secondary traumatic stress (STS), to describe the effects of trauma work on those in helping professions. In order to help understand the cultural nuances of STS, the current research team utilized transcripts of qualitative focus groups of 26 participants in an organization serving families in the Guatemala City Dump. Members of focus groups discussed what they felt qualified as child sexual abuse. The transcripts were examined to determine whether these aid workers were exposed to trauma, if language of STS was evidenced, and if cultural nuances existed to explain how they might be affected by working with a high-risk population. Limitation of the study and training issues for work in similar communities are discussed.
