Book excerpt: This synod, originally called in support of the Arianist heresy, was attended, by two papal legates, Bishop Vincentius of Capua and Bishop Marcellus of Campania. During their tenure over the synod, the legates were tempted into rejecting communion with St. Athanasius, the Archbishop of Alexandria, then the most prominent churchman in Christianity. While the synod refused to condemn Arius and his teachings, its canons remained disputed. The consent of the sitting bishops who attended was ultimately forced out of them by the Emperor Constantius, an Arian himself, who sought to place pressure on the Roman Papacy and the catholic faith.

It took place a year after the Edict of Milan, jointly issued east and west, in which Christianity became a legal religion within the Roman state. This council was the first called by Constantine I the Great, and would be the forerunner for the much larger First Council of Nicaea. It attempted to address: the date of Easter, Donatism, excommunication of prostitutes and charioteers, regulation of clergy, anabaptism, and clarification of the rite of baptism for those entering the faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite growing scepticism concerning the evidentiary value of normative legal sources, scholars continue to mine the legislative acts of ecclesiastical councils for insight into political, religious, and quotidian life in Frankish Gaul. Between the reigns of Clovis and Charlemagne (AD 511-768) at least eighty councils assembled, often on royal command, to discuss issues of concern to the episcopal and clerical attendees. Their published canons were intended to communicate ecclesiastical policy in the Frankish regnum. However, scholars have paid comparatively slight attention to the institution responsible for this body of legislation. This book remedies this lacuna by delineating the functions and modus operandi of the Frankish church council as an administrative body.

In light of significant advances in scholarship in recent years, extensive revisions have been made to this fourth edition. Three scholars from Union Theological Seminary in New York have incorporated new historical discoveries and provided fresh interpretations of various periods in church history from the first century to the twentieth.
