Book Synopsis Reflexive Pronouns: A Theoretical and Experimental Synthesis by : Darcy Sperlich
Download or read book Reflexive Pronouns: A Theoretical and Experimental Synthesis written by Darcy Sperlich and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-01-04 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive picture of reflexive pronouns from both a theoretical and experimental perspective, using the well-researched languages of English, German, Dutch, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. In order to understand the data from varying theoretical perspectives, the book considers selected syntactic and pragmatic analyses based on their current importance in the field. The volume consequently introduces the Emergentist Reflexivity Approach, which is a novel theoretical synthesis incorporating a sentence and pragmatic processor that accounts for reflexive pronoun behaviour in these six languages. Moreover, in support of this model a vast array of experimental literature is considered, including first and second language acquisition, bilingual, psycholinguistic, neurolinguistic and clinical studies. It is through both the intuitive and experimental data linguistic theorizing relies upon that brings out the strengths of the modelling adopted here, paving new avenues for future research. In sum, this volume unites a diverse array of the literature that currently sits largely divorced between the theoretical and experimental realms, and when put together a better understanding of reflexive pronouns under the auspices of the Emergentist Reflexivity Approach is forged.
Book Synopsis Three Streams of Generative Language Acquisition Research by : Tania Ionin
Download or read book Three Streams of Generative Language Acquisition Research written by Tania Ionin and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2019-04-15 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume contains a representative sample of papers presented at the 7th meeting of the Generative Approaches to Language Acquisition – North America (GALANA-7) conference. The book features three streams of research (Variation in Input, First Language Acquisition, and Second Language Acquisition), each of which investigates the nature of language acquisition from the generative perspective. A unique feature of the GALANA-7 conference, and of this volume, is the bringing together of research on generative language acquisition and research on the role that cross-dialectal input variation plays in acquisition. This volume should be of interest to scholars and students of first language acquisition, second language acquisition, and input variation.
Book Synopsis The Routledge Handbook of Second Language Acquisition, Morphosyntax, and Semantics by : Tania Ionin
Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Second Language Acquisition, Morphosyntax, and Semantics written by Tania Ionin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-03-11 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook provides innovative and comprehensive coverage of research on the second language acquisition (SLA) of morphosyntax, semantics, and the interface between the two. Organized by grammatical topic, the chapters are written by experts from formal and functional perspectives in the SLA of morphosyntax and semantics, providing in-depth yet accessible coverage of these areas. All chapters highlight the theoretical underpinnings of much work in SLA and their links to theoretical syntax and semantics; making comparisons to other populations, including child language acquirers, bilinguals, and heritage speakers (links to first language acquisition and bilingualism); dedicating a portion of each chapter to the research methods used to investigate the linguistic phenomenon in question (links to psycholinguistics and experimental linguistics); and, where relevant, including intervention studies on the phenomenon in question (links to applied linguistics). The volume will be indispensable to SLA researchers and students who work on any aspect of the SLA of morphosyntax or semantics. With its coverage of a variety of methodologies and comparisons to other populations (such as child language acquirers, early bilinguals, heritage speakers, and monolingual adults), the handbook is expected to also be of much interest to linguists who work in psycholinguistics, first language acquisition, and bilingualism.

Book Synopsis Mediatized Taiwanese Mandarin by : Chun-Yi Peng
Download or read book Mediatized Taiwanese Mandarin written by Chun-Yi Peng and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-11 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how language ideologies have emerged for gangtaiqiang through a combination of indexical and ideological processes in televised media. Gangtaiqiang (Hong Kong-Taiwan accent), a socially recognizable form of mediatized Taiwanese Mandarin, has become a stereotype for many Chinese mainlanders who have little real-life interaction with Taiwanese people. Using both qualitative and quantitative approaches, the author examines how Chinese millennials perceive gangtaiqiang by focusing on the following questions: 1) the role of televised media in the formation of language attitudes, and 2) how shifting gender ideologies are performed and embodied such attitudes. This book presents empirical evidence to argue that gangtaiqiang should, in fact, be conceptualized as a mediatized variety of Mandarin, rather than the actual speech of people in Hong Kong or Taiwan. The analyses in this book point to an emerging realignment among the Chinese towards gangtaiqiang, a variety traditionally associated with chic, urban television celebrities and young cosmopolitan types. In contrast to Beijing Mandarin, Taiwanese Mandarin is now perceived to be pretentious, babyish, and emasculated, mirroring the power dynamics between Taiwan and China.
Book Synopsis Understanding Second Language Acquisition by : Lourdes Ortega
Download or read book Understanding Second Language Acquisition written by Lourdes Ortega and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether we grow up with one, two, or several languages during our early years of life, many of us will learn a second, foreign, or heritage language in later years. The field of Second language acquisition (SLA, for short) investigates the human capacity to learn additional languages in late childhood, adolescence, or adulthood, after the first language --in the case of monolinguals-- or languages --in the case of bilinguals-- have already been acquired. Understanding Second Language Acquisition offers a wide-encompassing survey of this burgeoning field, its accumulated findings and proposed theories, its developed research paradigms, and its pending questions for the future. The book zooms in and out of universal, individual, and social forces, in each case evaluating the research findings that have been generated across diverse naturalistic and formal contexts for second language acquisition. It assumes no background in SLA and provides helpful chapter-by-chapter summaries and suggestions for further reading. Ideal as a textbook for students of applied linguistics, foreign language education, TESOL, and education, it is also recommended for students of linguistics, developmental psycholinguistics, psychology, and cognitive science. Book Synopsis The Acquisition of WH-Questions by : Jill De Villiers
Download or read book The Acquisition of WH-Questions written by Jill De Villiers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1995 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This special issue spans the domain of inquiry concerning the acquisition of wh-questions. Wh-questions have become a central interest for theorists of language acquisition because they exemplify some of the most significant principles of grammar. Most important, they involve movement rules; hence, their acquisition introduces issues such as: * When are long-distance rules acquired? * When are barriers to movement operative? * How do empty categories emerge? As these articles demonstrate, questions can provide a window into phrase structure as well as the principles of children's grammar. In the past several years, the growing body of research on questions has multiplied the perspectives, the range of constructions studied, and the cross-linguistic evidence about Universal Grammar and child language. In this new work, acquisition theorists have moved beyond trying to verify the claims of linguistic theory with respect to child grammars. The contributors share the perspective that one can take seriously the evidence from acquisition to suggest modifications in liguistic theory, or to help in deciding among competing accounts in adult grammar based on intuitions. Representing the leading edge of contemporary work in this domain, the articles range widely in topic, methodology, and theoretical commitments.
