Book Synopsis The Acquisition of WH-Questions by : Jill De Villiers
Download or read book The Acquisition of WH-Questions written by Jill De Villiers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1995 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This special issue spans the domain of inquiry concerning the acquisition of wh-questions. Wh-questions have become a central interest for theorists of language acquisition because they exemplify some of the most significant principles of grammar. Most important, they involve movement rules; hence, their acquisition introduces issues such as: * When are long-distance rules acquired? * When are barriers to movement operative? * How do empty categories emerge? As these articles demonstrate, questions can provide a window into phrase structure as well as the principles of children's grammar. In the past several years, the growing body of research on questions has multiplied the perspectives, the range of constructions studied, and the cross-linguistic evidence about Universal Grammar and child language. In this new work, acquisition theorists have moved beyond trying to verify the claims of linguistic theory with respect to child grammars. The contributors share the perspective that one can take seriously the evidence from acquisition to suggest modifications in liguistic theory, or to help in deciding among competing accounts in adult grammar based on intuitions. Representing the leading edge of contemporary work in this domain, the articles range widely in topic, methodology, and theoretical commitments.

Book Synopsis Syntactic Development by : William O'Grady
Download or read book Syntactic Development written by William O'Grady and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Syntactic Development presents a broad critical survey of the research literature on child language development. Giving balanced coverage to both theoretical and empirical issues, William O'Grady constructs an up-to-date picture of how children acquire the syntax of English. Part 1 offers an overview of the developmental data pertaining to a range of syntactic phenomena, including word order, subject drop, embedded clauses, wh-questions, inversion, relative clauses, passives, and anaphora. Part 2 considers the various theories that have been advanced to explain the facts of development as well as the learnability problem, reporting on work in the mainstream formalist framework but also considering the results of alternative approaches. Covering a wide range of perspectives in the modern study of syntactic development, this book is an invaluable reference for specialists in the field of language acquisition and provides an excellent introduction to the acquisition of syntax for students and researchers in psychology, linguistics, and cognitive science.

Book Synopsis The Acquisition of Word Order by : Marit Richardsen Westergaard
Download or read book The Acquisition of Word Order written by Marit Richardsen Westergaard and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within a new model of language acquisition, this book discusses verb second (V2) word order in situations where there is variation in the input. While traditional generative accounts consider V2 to be a parameter, this study shows that, in many languages, this word order is dependent on fine distinctions in syntax and information structure. Thus, within a split-CP model of clause structure, a number of "micro-cues" are formulated, taking into account the specific context for V2 vs. non-V2 (clause type, subcategory of the elements involved, etc.). The micro-cues are produced in children s I-language grammars on exposure to the relevant input. Focusing on a dialect of Norwegian, the book shows that children generally produce target-consistent V2 and non-V2 from early on, indicating that they are sensitive to the micro-cues. This includes contexts where word order is dependent on information structure. The children s occasional non-target-consistent behavior is accounted for by economy principles."
Book Synopsis The Acquisition of Syntax by : Marc-Ariel Friedemann
Download or read book The Acquisition of Syntax written by Marc-Ariel Friedemann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a collection of studies that survey recent research in developmental linguistics, illustrating the fruitful interaction between comparative syntax and language acquisition. The contributors each analyse a well defined range of acquisition data, aiming to derive them from primitive differences between child and adult grammar. The book covers cross-linguistic and cross-categorial phenomena, shedding light on major developments in this novel and rapidly growing field. Extensions to second language acquisition and neuropathology are also suggested.
Book Synopsis First Language Acquisition by : David Ingram
Download or read book First Language Acquisition written by David Ingram and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1989-09-07 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major textbook, setting new standards of clarity and comprehensiveness, will be welcomed by all serious students of first language acquisition. Written from a linguistic perspective, it provides detailed accounts of the development of children's receptive and productive abilities in all the core areas of language - phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics. With a critical acuity drawn from long experience, and without attempting to offer a survey of all the huge mass of child language literature, David Ingram directs students to the fundamental studies and sets these in broad perspective. Students are thereby introduced to the history of the field and the current state of our knowledge in respect of three main themes: method, description and explanation. Whilst the descriptive facts that are currently available on first language acquisition are central to the book, its emphasis on methodology and explanation gives it a particular distinction. The various ways in which research is conducted is discussed in detail, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of various approaches, leading to new perspectives on key theoretical issues. First Language Acquisition provides advanced undergraduate and graduate students alike with a cogent and closely analysed exposition of how children acquire language in real time. Equally importantly, readers will have acquired the fundamental knowledge and skill not only to interpret primary literature but also to approach their own research with sophistication.
Book Synopsis On the Typology of Wh-questions by : Lisa Lai Shen Cheng
Download or read book On the Typology of Wh-questions written by Lisa Lai Shen Cheng and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 1997 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offers an explanation for a long-standing question in the typological distinction among languages with respect to formation of interrogatives which use questions words such as "who" and "what." Proposes that the availability of question particles and the properties of question words contribute to the typological distinctions found, and argues that the availability of question particles correlates with the lack of fronting of question words. Of interest to scholars working on interrogatives, syntactic theory, comparative syntax, Chinese syntax, and typology. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book Synopsis The Acquisition of Italian by : Adriana Belletti
Download or read book The Acquisition of Italian written by Adriana Belletti and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major contribution to the study of language acquisition and language development inspired by theoretical linguistics has been made by research on the acquisition of Italian syntax. This book offers an updated overview of results from theory-driven experimental and corpus-based research on the acquisition of Italian in different modes (monolingual, early and late L2, SLI, etc.), as well as exploring possible developments for future research. The book focuses on experimental studies which address research questions generated by linguistic theory, providing a detailed illustration of the fruitful interaction between linguistic theorizing and developmental studies. The authors are leading figures in theoretical linguistics and language acquisition; their own work is featured in the research presented here. Students and advanced researchers will benefit from the systematic review offered by this book and the critical assessment of the field that it provides.
Book Synopsis Multiple Wh-fronting by : Cedric Boeckx
Download or read book Multiple Wh-fronting written by Cedric Boeckx and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Typological differences in the formation of multiple "Wh"-questions are well-known. One option is fronting all "Wh"-phrases to the sentence periphery. The contributions to this volume all explore this option from a number of perspectives. Topics covered include finer investigations of the classic multiple "Wh"-fronting languages (such as the South Slavic languages Bulgarian and Serbo-Croatian), extensions to less well studied languages (Basque, Malagasy, Persian, Yiddish), explorations for languages that don t obviously fall into this category (German, Hungarian), peripheral effects (optionality of fronting, Superiority vs. Anti-Superiority etc.), interface issues (with semantics, pragmatics, and phonology), and simply theoretical approaches aiming to capture the mechanisms involved in multiple "Wh"-fronting strategies. The theoretical framework adopted throughout is the Minimalist Program, viewed from different angles. This volume brings together some of the leading experts on the syntax of "Wh"-questions and offers up-to-date analyses of the topic. It will be indispensable for scholars investigating multiple "Wh"-questions, and will find an appropriate audience in advanced students and faculty alike.
