Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sebastian Rale a Maine Tragedy of the Eighteenth Century A very wise man once averred that "there is no new thing under the sun." The student of history may be entirely familiar with the principal facts appearing in the following pages, and I do not claim to have discovered any new evidence regarding the career of that remarkable character, Sebastian Rale, or the scenes of his turbulent life. They are interwoven with the early history of New England, and the truth cannot be obliterated by sympathy or prejudice. (1657-1724) arrived in Quebec, Canada. He quickly learned the native languages and started his dictionary for his school at his assignment in Maine among the Wabanaki people of the Norridgewock Tribe. He constructed a Church and the first school at the tribal home near the Kennebec River. The people quickly learned English and were able to read and understand the English way of handling treaties. More of their land was being taken for the natural forests, trees, wildlife and seafood. Shipbuilding along the coasts produced ships for England. The Massachusetts Bay Colony wanted Father Rale out of their way, so attacks happened several times. With a bounty of silver on his head, Father Rale and his people were attacked by the English soldiers. During the final attack resulting in the death of many tribal families, Father Rale was massacred on August 23, 1724.

Book excerpt: In offering here a highly readable yet comprehensive description of New England's Indians as they lived when European settlers first met them, the author provides a well-rounded picture of the natives as neither savages nor heroes, but fellow human beings existing at a particular time and in a particular environment. He dispels once and for all the common notion of native New England as peopled by a handful of savages wandering in a trackless wilderness. In sketching the picture the author has had help from such early explorers as Verrazano, Champlain, John Smith, and a score of literate sailors; Pilgrims and Puritans; settlers, travelers, military men, and missionaries. A surprising number of these took time and trouble to write about the new land and the characteristics and way of life of its native people. A second major background source has been the patient investigations of modern archaeologists and scientists, whose several enthusiastic organizations sponsor physical excavations and publications that continually add to our perception of prehistoric men and women, their habits, and their environment. This account of the earlier New Englanders, of their land and how they lived in it and treated it; their customs, food, life, means of livelihood, and philosophy of life will be of interest to all general audiences concerned with the history of Native Americans and of New England.

Book excerpt: Providing a succinct yet comprehensive introduction to the history of the Atlantic world in its entirety, The Atlantic Experience traces the first Portuguese journeys to the West coast of Africa in the mid-fifteenth century through to the abolition of slavery in America in the late-nineteenth century. Bringing together the histories of Europe, Africa and the Americas, this book supersedes a history of nations, foregrounds previously neglected parts of these continents, and explores the region as a holistic entity that encompassed people from many different areas, ethnic groups and national backgrounds. Distilling this huge topic into key themes such as conquest, trade, race and migration, Catherine Armstrong and Laura Chmielewski's chronological survey illuminates the crucial aspects of this cutting edge field.

Book excerpt: Look out for a new book from Garry Wills, What the Qur'an Meant, coming fall 2017. Gary Wills has won significant acclaim for his bestselling works of religion and history. Here, for the first time, he combines both disciplines in a sweeping examination of Christianity in America throughout the last 400 years. Wills argues that the struggle now, as throughout our nation's history, is between the head and the heart, reason and emotion, enlightenment and Evangelism. A landmark volume for anyone interested in either politics or religion, Head and Heart concludes that, while religion is a fertile and enduring force in American politics, the tension between the two is necessary, inevitable, and unending.
