Book Synopsis The 1969 Seattle Pilots by : Kenneth Hogan
Download or read book The 1969 Seattle Pilots written by Kenneth Hogan and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2006-12-11 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mariners were not Seattle's first major league baseball team. In 1937, Seattle businessman Emil Sick bought the city's failing Pacific Coast League team, the Indians, renamed them the Rainiers and constructed a new, state-of-the-art stadium. Over the next few decades, at least two teams--the Kansas City A's and the Cleveland Indians--would consider relocating to Seattle, and both PCL president Dewey Soriano and Cleveland Indians owner William Daly lobbied to bring a major league team to the booming city. Their efforts paid off in 1967, when despite shrinking Rainiers attendance figures, Seattle was awarded the second of two American League expansion teams. For one season--1969--Sick's Stadium became the home of the Seattle Pilots. From the earliest days of the franchise through their final move, this book tells the story of the first one-year team in the American or National League since 1901 (when, ironically, the Milwaukee Brewers left town after the AL's first year of major-league status). After a concise discussion of Seattle's amateur and minor league history, the main text provides a detailed account of the efforts to bring major league baseball to town, the first team draft, the 1969 spring training and regular season, the attempt to save the team, and finally the move to Milwaukee. Brief interviews with fourteen players round out the text. Tables including a team roster, final league standings, wins and losses and player stats are also provided.

Listen to Classic Rock! Exploring a Musical Genre explores in detail the genesis, evolution, and proliferation of classic rock. Next, an A to Z listing of artists (musicians, songwriters, and bands), albums, important concerts, and songs; a chapter on classic rock's impact on popular culture; a chapter on classic rock's legacy; and a bibliography. This organization gives readers the choice of starting from the beginning to learn how classic rock and each of its subgenres emerged after rock and roll or skip ahead to a specific artist, recording, or song in the Must-Hear Music section. This volume stands out from other resources on classic rock for its listening-centered approach. Most books on classic rock focus on trivia, history, terminology, or criticism. It also explores the sound of the music of important artists and offers musical analyses that are accessible to upper-level high school and lower-level undergraduates while at the same time maintaining the interest of classic rock aficionados and scholars.
Book Synopsis Learning from Seattle by : Roberto Brambilla

Download or read book 1980 written by Jim Cullen and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2022-10-14 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people are aware that 1980 was an important moment in U.S. history: at a time of economic stagnation at home and international defeat abroad, it represented a turning point in bringing Ronald Reagan to the presidency and inaugurating a conservative era in American politics. What's less well known is how the popular culture of 1980 also marked a pivotal transition. By boring in with granular detail on a few key touchstone areas--politics, music, film, television, and publishing--1980 describes a zeitgeist as it shifts, capturing those elements that harkened back toward the seventies as they jostled with others that pointed forward to the eighties. The effect is analogous to capturing in slow motion the mysterious but unmistakable process by which a child grows. The result is a lively, revealing, and informative account not just of a single year and the social milieu of an era, but also a book that traces some of the most profound rhythms of American history more generally. From who shot J.R. to The Dukes of Hazzard; from John and Yoko to the end of disco and the rise of rap; from Heaven's Gate to Private Benjamin; and from Jimmy Carter's defeat to the rise of Ronald Reagan, Jim Cullen shows how 1980 can be seen as a pivot point in American culture--a time of change that ushered in the current era.
