Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Ouch! Ouch! Ouch!” fourteen-year-old Jane cried, believing she was being bitten by spiders as she fled her bedroom to seek the comfort of the sofa in the downstairs living room. In succeeding nights, this behavior was repeated, only now, she was also shouting, “Bats in the belfry! Bats in the belfry!” imagining there were people occupying the unfinished area of the upstairs that was accessed through her bedroom. These episodes revealed for the first time she was having full-blown mental health issues. This was not news to her younger sisters, Elaine and Julie, who recognized from very young ages Jane’s inappropriate and antisocial behavior. As adults, the two younger sisters, for the most part, managed to escape from dealing with the tribulations presented by their older sister until their mother’s heart attack when they were thrown into Jane’s hell head on.

Book Review Highlights for Seasons of Insanity "Fans of books like A Beautiful Mind or The Quiet Room will appreciate this account of people living with schizophrenia and the loved ones that are affected by their mental illness. Additionally, this would resonate with readers who liked Jeannette Walls' The Glass Castle about her eccentric and emotionally unstable family." -Pacific Book Review, by Ella Vincent "Killifer and Martin are direct, detailed, and painstakingly honest-requirements for any interesting autobiography. . . . there are no easy answers for dealing with mentally imbalanced loved ones. Still, this sometimes painful retelling of the family's struggles is a gift to society because it sheds light on a subject not often discussed." -The US Review of Books, by Toby Berry "It is not an easy book to read-or, no doubt, to write. But it is a well-crafted story that will be deeply touching to many readers as you follow two girls going from childhood to adulthood trying to navigate the difficult and complex situations that Jane puts them in . . . As Louise stated, 'You can't fix the situation and you can't feel guilty. You just have to go with it and do your best.'" -The Pagosa Springs (Colorado) SUN, by Carole Howard

Download or read book Insanity written by Charlie Bronson and published by Kings Road Publishing. This book was released on 2004-03 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Bronson is the most feared and the most notorious convict in the prison system. Renowned for serial hostage taking and his rooftop sieges, he is a legend in his own lifetime. Yet behind the crime and the craziness, there is a great deal more to Charlie. He is a man of great warmth and humor; a man of great artistic talent who exhibits his drawings around the country; and a man with an overpowering urge not to let the system get him down. Insanity is a look into the mind of a true individual--a wild, inspired, single-minded, fascinating man, oppressed not only by the workings of his singular mind, but also by the system that confines him.

Book Synopsis Healing Insanity: a Study of Igbo Medicine in Contemporary Nigeria by : Patrick E. Iroegbu
Download or read book Healing Insanity: a Study of Igbo Medicine in Contemporary Nigeria written by Patrick E. Iroegbu and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-06-08 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Healing Insanity: A Study of Igbo Medicine in Contemporary Nigeria is an original and in-depth study on endogenous medical system in an African society. It is craftily written and provides solid insight, through case studies and theory, into how insanity affects patients and the society. Particularly, it explores various collective representations and strategies regarding insanity and healing as it examines the healing institutions, healers, and ritual cults. The central question is, given the patterns of healing, how do the Igbo shape the incidence and symptoms of insanity, define its aetiology, and provide healers with culture-specific resources and skills to address this illness? The focus became increasingly centred on bodily semantics and endogenous knowledge systems and practices. Dr. Patrick Iroegbus work is a very valuable and rare study and has appeared at a desirable time. It is, for an African society, a comprehensive study of the many ways Igbo people, in their practical, routinelike attitudes and body-centred experiences, as well as in their more reflective aetiologic knowledge and healing institutions, relate to the phenomenon of insanity, or ara, in the cultural parlance. As the first of its kind, reminiscent of, and assured by, the various remarks of Igbo scholars and leaders at various meetings and discourses, the task this work has set out to accomplish is a very brave one. The authors account of his fieldwork experiences and adopted techniques illustrates his initiation, revealing him as a genuine ethnographer who is a friend of people and at ease with his field. With both the far-seeing and inspiring analysis of Igbo medicine, life, and culture accounted for in the work, the book stands out for ethnographers, teachers, students, leaders, policymakers, and the general public. This is a book that deserves to be read as it shapes the critical path toward understanding ways of healing insanity in a culture-specific context, crosscutting perspectives for a relationship between indigenous healing and the biomedical sphere. Prof. Ren Devisch (Africa Research Centre, University of Leuven) This book is written with a clear purpose for everyone to readto understand and heal insanityand indeed provides a thick piece of cultural philosophy and vernacular of Igbo medicine in hopes of putting cultural wisdom in pursuit of integral health care development. Prof. Pantaleon Iroegbu (Professor of Philosophy, Major-Seminary, Ekpoma, January 2006) To read this book, as I did, is to get the benefit of Dr. Patrick Iroegbus ethnographic insight for an archetypical African healing system in Igboland. It offers a fascinating theory of symbolic release that speaks of African symbolic action and knowledge system. Dr. Paul Komba, Esq. (University of Cambridge)

Book excerpt: Seasons of Insanity is a harrowing true story of a family affected by mental illness. Elaine Taylor and Julie Hanes have written a book telling about how they tried to cope with their sister, Jane, and her bipolar schizophrenia. This book starts with Taylor and Hanes dealing with Jane’s increasingly erratic behavior. As Jane gets older, she becomes more verbally abusive to her sisters and interferes with the care of their elderly mother. Taylor and Hanes become more troubled by Jane’s behavior and have to decide whether to cut their ties to their troubled sister or to help her get the professional help she needs.
