Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper introduces seasonality into a model of expected stock returns. We confirm previous findings that there is no evidence for cross-sectional variation in expected stock returns when we restrict the means to be constant throughout the year. Yet, we show there is substantial variation when considering each month of the year separately. Applying a seasonal structure we estimate an annualized standard deviation of 13.8%. There is strong evidence stocks have distinct expected returns in January, February, ... December. The estimated seasonal variation in expected returns is positive in every calendar month and especially high during October, December, and January. This structure is independent of industry, size, and earnings announcements. These results support the inclusion of seasonal structure into asset-pricing models.

This book should be read and absorbed by every serious student of the field, academic and professional.” Eugene Fama, Robert R. McCormick Distinguished Service Professor of Finance, University of Chicago and 2013 Nobel Laureate in Economic Sciences “The empirical analysis of the cross-section of stock returns is a monumental achievement of half a century of finance research. Both the established facts and the methods used to discover them have subtle complexities that can mislead casual observers and novice researchers. Bali, Engle, and Murray’s clear and careful guide to these issues provides a firm foundation for future discoveries.” John Campbell, Morton L. and Carole S. Olshan Professor of Economics, Harvard University “Bali, Engle, and Murray provide clear and accessible descriptions of many of the most important empirical techniques and results in asset pricing.” Kenneth R. French, Roth Family Distinguished Professor of Finance, Tuck School of Business, Dartmouth College “This exciting new book presents a thorough review of what we know about the cross-section of stock returns. Given its comprehensive nature, systematic approach, and easy-to-understand language, the book is a valuable resource for any introductory PhD class in empirical asset pricing.” Lubos Pastor, Charles P. McQuaid Professor of Finance, University of Chicago Empirical Asset Pricing: The Cross Section of Stock Returns is a comprehensive overview of the most important findings of empirical asset pricing research. The book begins with thorough expositions of the most prevalent econometric techniques with in-depth discussions of the implementation and interpretation of results illustrated through detailed examples. The second half of the book applies these techniques to demonstrate the most salient patterns observed in stock returns. The phenomena documented form the basis for a range of investment strategies as well as the foundations of contemporary empirical asset pricing research. Empirical Asset Pricing: The Cross Section of Stock Returns also includes: Discussions on the driving forces behind the patterns observed in the stock market An extensive set of results that serve as a reference for practitioners and academics alike Numerous references to both contemporary and foundational research articles Empirical Asset Pricing: The Cross Section of Stock Returns is an ideal textbook for graduate-level courses in asset pricing and portfolio management. The book is also an indispensable reference for researchers and practitioners in finance and economics. Turan G. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the seasonality effect in the cross section of factor premia representing a broad set of stock market strategies. Using cross-sectional and time-series tests, we investigated the cross-sectional seasonality of market, value, size, momentum, quality, and low-risk premia within a sample of 24 international equity markets for the years 1986-2016. We provide convincing evidence that the factors with the highest (lowest) mean returns in the same calendar months in the past continue to overperform (underperform) in seven of the studied countries: Denmark, Finland, France, Israel, Spain, Sweden, and the United States. Furthermore, when the factors in multiple countries are considered, the past same-month returns display strong predictive power for future size and low-risk premia.

Book excerpt: Stock Markets, Investments and Corporate Behavior examines the nature of stock market growth and decline, the function of financial markets, and their implications for commercial companies. Traditionally, finance academics have attempted to understand financial markets and commercial companies as physicists approach their subject matter: with a set of laws in mind that govern the field. But finance is not physics. The academic's approach falsely assumes that financial markets can be understood as systems within which self-interested maximizers behave in logical ways that are coordinated by the invisible hand of the price mechanism. This book demonstrates that finance is more appropriately understood as a field in which investors and finance managers may or may not use rational calculations as the basis of their decision making. This book opens with an effective dismantling of the traditional mathematical approach used to understand and describe markets and corporate financial behavior. In its place, the mathematics of growth and decline is developed anew, while holding to the realization that the decisions of organizations rely on the choices of real people with limited information available to them. The book will appeal to all students who wish to reappraise their knowledge of finance in a thoughtful manner. Specifically, this book is designed to appeal to anyone who wishes to refine their understanding of the nature of stock markets and financial growth, optimal portfolio allocation, option pricing, asset valuation, corporate financial behavior, and what it means to be ethical in our financial institutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper conducts an empirical analysis of whether stock return seasonality is related to the capital gain lock-in effect. In the spirit of a recent paper by Ayers, Lefanowicz and Robinson (2003), it tests two hypotheses that are implied by the asset pricing theory developed by Klein (2001). The first hypothesis is that in the month of January, stocks with losses should have large returns and stocks with gains should have relatively poor returns. The second is that in the last few months of the year this effect is reversed, i.e., stocks with losses should have low returns compared to stocks with gains. Both hypotheses are well supported, in the precise way expected, in tests on the cross-section of stock returns for January and for the last few months of the year. These results also provide an alternate explanation of the quot;dispositionquot; effect.

Book excerpt: I investigate seasonalities in a set of well-known anomalies in the cross-section of U.S. stock returns. A January seasonality goes beyond a size effect and strongly affects most anomalies, which can even switch sign in January. Return seasonality exists outside of January depending on the month of the quarter. Small stocks earn abnormally high average returns on the last day of each quarter, which significantly affects size, idiosyncratic volatility, and illiquidity portfolios. The results have strong implications for the interpretation and analysis of many anomalies, such as asset growth and momentum.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A model of infrequent rebalancing can explain specific predictability patterns in the time-series and cross-section of stock returns. First, infrequent rebalancing produces return autocorrelations that are consistent with empirical evidence from intraday returns and new evidence from daily returns. Autocorrelations can switch sign and become positive at the rebalancing horizon. Second, the cross-sectional variance in expected returns is larger when more traders rebalance. This effect generates seasonality in the cross-section of stock returns, which can help explain available empirical evidence.

Book excerpt: Existing research has documented cross-sectional seasonality of stock returns--the periodic outperformance of certain stocks during the same calendar months or weekdays. A model in which assets differ in their sensitivities to investor mood explains these effects and implies other seasonal patterns. We find that relative performance across individual stocks or stock portfolios during past high or low mood months and weekdays tends to recur/reverse in periods with congruent/noncongruent mood. Furthermore, assets with higher sensitivities to aggregate mood--higher mood betas-- subsequently earn higher/lower returns during high/low mood periods, including those induced by Daylight Saving Time changes, weather conditions and anticipation of major holidays.

The practitioner's interest in Chinese markets stems from corporations; investors and financial institutions foresee substantial benefits from investing in China in the long run. However, the academic literature on the development of securities markets and reform of state enterprises in China is still in its infancy and fragmented. This handbook aims to bridge that gap by presenting a wide spectrum of research in the forefront of financial applications. It integrates theory and practice with state-of-the-art statistical techniques and provides numerous insights into the main challenges confronting Chinese markets in the new millennium.
