Download or read book Weather and the Epidemiology of the African Armyworm (Spodoptera Exempta) written by M. R. Tucker and published by Hyperion Books. This book was released on 1993 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summarizes work carried out in the African armyworm seasons during 1972-88 in relation to frequency of outbreaks and weather conditions. The use of trajectory analysis in estimating the migration paths of windborne moths during the season is discussed together with the importance of rainstorms in concentrating the moths to cause an outbreak. Of interest to those working in the field of predictive techniques in migration research, and those planning control operations against this serious pest.
Book Synopsis Radar Entomology by : V. Alistair Drake

Book excerpt: Many of the world's most serious agricultural pests are highly migratory. Through the use of special-purpose radars we are provided with insights into their movement and how they learn about and navigate through their environment. This text examines the behaviour and regional variations of these species, as well as the altitude of migration, concentration of insects in layers and how they respond to large and small-scale wind systems. The book relates radar observation of insect movement to complementary and competing methodologies and surveys its capabilities and limitations. It also deals wi

Download or read book Comparative Ecology written by Y. Itô and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1981-03-12 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1980 book considers the patterns of population fluctuations of animals and intraspecific social relations by means of comparative methods and discusses the evolution of population regulation mechanisms and social relations. The author proposes that parental care has evolved in environments in which it is difficult for the young to obtain food, whilst high fecundity has evolved in the opposite environment. He presents evidence from a wide range of organisms to argue that during evolution animals repeatedly face the 'choice' of two strategies - low fecundity combined with parental protection, or high fecundity - and that this choice determined the amplitude, regularity and associated main factors of population fluctuations as well as the main characteristics of social relations as expressed in group life or dispersed living involving territory. Although many examples are drawn from insects, with which the author is most familiar, mammal, birds and other animal groups are also examined in depth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: the virtual impossibility of extracting the many different species from a habitat with equal efficiency by a single method (e.g. Nef, 1960). 1.1 Population estimates Population estimates can be classified into a number of different types; the most convenient classification is that adopted by Morris (1955), although he used the terms somewhat differently in a later paper (1960). 1.1.1 Absolute and related estimates The animal numbers may be expressed as a density per unit area of the ground of the habitat. Such estimates are given by nearest neighbour and related techniques (Chapter 2), marking and recapture (Chapter 3), by sampling a known fraction of the habitat (Chapter 4-6) and by removal sampling and random walk techniques (Chapter 7). Absolute population The number of animals per unit area (e.g. hectare, acre). It is almost impossible to construct a budget or to study mortality factors without the conversion of population estimates to absolute figures, for not only do insects often move from the plant to the soil at different developmental stages, but the amount of plant material is itself always changing. The importance of obtaining absolute estimates cannot be overemphasized.
