Book excerpt: Season of the Bruja follows a young woman as she comes into her magical abilities and faces reemergent threats from the past. From a young age, Althalia knew she would someday be the last of her kind—a bruja, tasked with keeping the power and stories of the ancient ways from fading fully into history. Never alone, Althalia works in a paranormal museum with her friends, a real-life Chupacabra and a were-coyote, while living with and caring for her beloved abuela. Through these powerful connections, her skills and knowledge grow. But the prejudice her people have always faced continues, and after a seemingly random encounter with a priest, Althalia feels the weight of hundreds of years of religious oppression coming down upon her and her abuela. She must realize her destiny and grow into it quickly if she is to prevent the church from achieving its ultimate goal—destroying the last bruja.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cartoonist Sourya’s manga and bandes dessinées-inspired adventure continues as Talli trains to master her mysterious powers before her pursuers lay siege to the city in the third exhilarating installment of the Daughter of the Moon series! Talli is a Summoner, a being of immense but mysterious powers granted by the goddess of the moon, and shunned by society for that very power. On the run from the forces of Lord Ulric, who wants to exterminate the Summoners, Talli and her companions take shelter in a mountain stronghold manned by those loyal to the children of the moon. Fara, an elderly Summoner—the first of her own kind that Talli's ever met—begins training her to use her power and, ultimately, the mythical Chimera that appears when her blood is spilled. Isolated with her new teacher and her frequent verbal sparring partner Lélo, a lethargic but incredible swordsman, Talli's ability grows. Further down the mountain, Lord Ulric and his terrifying Special Brigade lay siege on the walls that separate them from their prey. As the gates fall, Talli's loyal knight protector, Alan, bets his life on Captain Nina, forest warriors Max and Maddie make a final stand against improbable odds, and we see the true power of the Summoners for the first time!

Book excerpt: Althalia Cabrera might seem like any other witchy Portland hipster whiling away her days behind the counter of a freaky occult museum, but there's more to her whole deal than a trendy pursuit of the craft. Althalia is a bruja by blood—the youngest in a long line of powerful magic users from a long-ago culture indigenous to Mexico. In her twenty years, Althalia has studied with her loving abuela by her side, supporting and mentoring her use of the family magic, and protecting her from the darkest parts of their practice's history. But just as Althalia's inner light and power begins to shine, the darkness of the past finds its way into her world and strikes a tragic blow, testing Althalia in ways she might not be prepared enough to survive.

Book excerpt: Puerto Rico, one of the last and most populated colonial territories in the world, occupies a relatively unique position. Its lengthy interaction with the United States has resulted in the long-term acquisition of expanded legal rights and relative political stability. At the same time, that interaction has simultaneously seen political intolerance and the denial of basic rights, particularly toward those who have challenged colonialism. In Puerto Rico under Colonial Rule, academics and intellectuals from the fields of political science, history, sociology, and law examine three themes: evidence of state-sponsored political persecution in the twentieth century, contemporary issues, and the case of Vieques.

Little, Lisa Morton, and Mark Allan Gunnells put the horror back in Halloween with a quintet of devilishly delightful tales, curated by acclaimed author and editor Brian James Freeman. STRANGE CANDY by Robert McCammon Chocolate bars and sour suckers are trick-or-treat staples, but beware the odd sweet at the bottom of your bag. You never know who it’s from—or what it might do to you. THE RAGE OF ACHILLES by Kevin Lucia Father Ward should have heeded the warnings about hearing confession on All Hallow’s Eve. Because a man is about to tell him a secret more haunting than any he has heard before. DEMON AIR by John R. Little Fear of flying is not uncommon. But on this transpacific airline, the real danger isn’t the flight itself. It’s whoever—or whatever—is up in the air with you. LA HACIENDA DE LOS MUERTOS by Lisa Morton Trick McGrew, former cowboy star of the silver screen, has never believed in tall tales. But down in Mexico, the land of La Llorona, he’s about to find out just how real urban legends can be. #MAKEHALLOWEENSCARYAGAIN by Mark Allan Gunnells Some people will go to any lengths to rack up retweets, likes, and follows on social media, no matter who they end up hurting . . . or even killing. Praise for Halloween Carnival Volume 1 “[Halloween Carnival: Volume One] provides festive entertainment from an assortment of the genre’s most accomplished regulars.”—Unnerving Magazine “Entertaining . . . I’d suggest reading them in the daytime.”—Journey of a Bookseller “A solid collection . . . A Halloween fan who reads ebooks can’t go wrong here.”—Battered, Tattered, Yellowed, & Creased

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tales from the Sephardic Dispersion begins the most important collection of Jewish folktales ever published. It is the first volume in Folktales of the Jews, the five-volume series to be released over the next several years, in the tradition of Louis Ginzberg's classic, Legends of the Jews. The 71 tales here and the others in this series have been selected from the Israel Folktale Archives, Named in Honor of Dov Noy, The University of Haifa (IFA), a treasure house of Jewish lore that has remained largely unavailable to the entire world until now. Since the creation of the State of Israel, the IFA has collected more than 20,000 tales from newly arrived immigrants, long-lost stories shared by their families from around the world. The tales come from the major ethno-linguistic communities of the Jewish world and are representative of a wide variety of subjects and motifs, especially rich in Jewish content and context. Each of the tales is accompanied by in-depth commentary that explains the tale's cultural, historical, and literary background and its similarity to other tales in the IFA collection, and extensive scholarly notes. There is also an introduction that describes the Sephardic culture and its folk narrative tradition, a world map of the areas covered, illustrations, biographies of the collectors and narrators, tale type and motif indexes, a subject index, and a comprehensive bibliography. Until the establishment of the IFA, we had had only limited access to the wide range of Jewish folk narratives. Even in Israel, the gathering place of the most wide-ranging cross-section of world Jewry, these folktales have remained largely unknown. Many of the communities no longer exist as cohesive societies in their representative lands; the Holocaust, migration, and changes in living styles have made the continuation of these tales impossible. This volume and the others to come will be monuments to a rich but vanishing oral tradition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work W J McGee sheds light on one of the least-studied tribes of North America, The Seri Indians. This is a unique tribe in habits, customs, and language, living in Tiburon Island in Gulf of California and a small adjacent area on the mainland of Sonora (Mexico). McGee covers everything about the tribe from their habitat, history, features, language, characters, and their place in society. Excerpt from the book "The Seri men and women are of splendid physique; they have fine chests, with slender but sinewy limbs, though the hands and especially the feet are large; their heads, while small in relation to stature, approach the average in size; the hair is luxuriant and coarse, ranging from typical black to tawny in color, and is worn long. They are notably vigorous in movement, erect in carriage, and remarkable for fleetness and endurance."
