Why do we teach children to read? It is not merely to decode the words. We teach them to derive meaning from the text, to comprehend it. To not just read the lines, but to read between the lines and even read beyond the lines. So how can you make teaching comprehension in primary schools effective and engaging? How are you ensuring that children are finding meaning in what they read and how do we support more able readers to learn more? What does a good ′reading′ lesson look like? This book demonstrates the effective teaching of reading through exemplar lessons. It discusses what makes them good lesson plans and how they can be adapted to suit different classes and different schools. In particular, this book helps you to meet the needs of more able readers particularly in years 5 and 6, outlining ways to challenge more able pupils to support them with the level 6 tests in Year 6. It helps you to cultivate your subject knowledge and invigorate your classroom teaching through focusing on what children need to learn and how to teach it. Did you know that this book is part of the Lessons in Teaching series? WHAT IS THE LESSONS IN TEACHING SERIES? Suitable for any teacher at any stage of their career, the books in this series are packed with great ideas for teaching engaging, outstanding lessons in your primary classroom. The Companion Website accompanying the series includes extra resources including tips, lesson starters, videos and Pinterest boards. Books in this series: Lessons in Teaching Grammar in Primary Schools, Lessons in Teaching Computing in Primary Schools, Lessons in Teaching Number and Place Value in Primary Schools, Lessons in Teaching Reading Comprehension in Primary Schools, Lesson in Teaching Phonics in Primary Schools

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WORLD HISTORY: FIRST WORLD WAR. This fascinating collection of letters traces the exchanges between a young subaltern on the front, Gerard 'Ged' Garvin, and his mother and father at home. Correspondence was eagerly awaited by all. Ged savored letters home like 'Jim Hawkins trickling the doubloons through his fingers'. Equally, his mother and father at home were always fearful that each letter they received would be the last. In a letter J. L. Garvin sent to his son 21 July 1916 he wrote: 'Of course there's no fresh letter from you and we didn't expect it. But we hope, all the same, to get word tomorrow . . .' Ged was killed the very next day. He was just twenty years old. Ged's father was J. L. Garvin (1868-1947) - editor of The Observer and an important figure in pre-war politics and society. Taken together the letters vividly capture the experience of a family during the First World War.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2001. An inclusive education is one which seeks to respond to individual differences through an entitlement of all learners to common curricula. (Armstrong and Barton 2000). This book attempts to respond to this definition of inclusion by examining the principles of the literacy curriculum and a range of pedagogic practices. The complex relationships between inclusion, literacy and learning are acknowledged and it is argued that quality learning in language and literacy can work towards increased equity and involvement within the classroom community.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to read is the key to educational achievement, and poor literacy skills will limit a person's opportunities throughout life. The Committee's inquiry examines current practice in schools used to teach children to read, in order to consider which method works best based on available evidence. Recognition is given that the subject is a complex one and is also influenced by a range of factors outside a school's control. Issues discussed include the impact of the National Literacy Strategy (NLS); literacy teaching methods including the phonics method, which focuses on sound-letter correspondence; the need to promote reading for pleasure; research evidence findings; barriers to reading acquisition; learning difficulties and disabilities. Current statistics indicate that around 20 per cent of children aged 11 years still underachieve in reading and writing skills for their age level. The Committee's recommendations include the need for a review of the NLS prescribed methodology for the teaching of reading in primary schools, and that further large-scale comparative research should be commissioned by the DfES to determine which methods are most effective.
