A lower limit of 103 (99) GeV/c2 is obtained at 95% confidence level for the top quark mass from the absence of events consistent with standard model top quark decays with background subtraction (no background subtraction). We do however observe one event in the e? channel which cannot be explained by the known backgrounds. While we make no claim that this event is due to top quark decay, it is not inconsistent with a top quark mass in the range 130--170 GeV/c2

The results are based on an integrated luminosity of 13.5 pb[sup [minus]1] of data collected by the D0 detector during the 1992-3 Tevatron collider run. They have searched for Standard Model t[bar t] decays into the dilepton decay modes ee + X, e[mu] + X and [mu][mu] + X. No significant signal is observed for top quark production in these channels. They find one candidate event in the e[mu] + X channel and no events in the other two channels with an estimated non-top background of 0.76 [+-] 0.16 events.

The search is performed in the ll′ = e? and?? final states. No evidence for this process has been found in data samples of approximately 400 pb−1. The domain in the [M({bar t}1), M({bar {nu}})] plane excluded at the 95% C.L. is substantially extended by this search.

Book excerpt: We report on the search for the top quark in p[bar p] collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron ([radical]s= 1.8 TeV) in the di-lepton and lepton+jets channels using multivariate methods. An H-matrix analysis of the e[mu] data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 13.5[plus-minus]1.6 pb[sup[minus]1] yields one event whose likelihood to be a top quark event, assuming m[sub top]= 180 GeV/c[sup 2], is ten times more than that of WW and eighteen times more than that of Z[yields][tau][tau]. A neural network analysis of the e+jets channel using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 47.9[plus-minus]5.7 pb[sup[minus]1] shows an excess of events in the signal region and yields a cross-section for t[bar t] production of 6.7[plus-minus]2.3 (stat.) pb, assuming a top mass of 200 GeV/c[sup 2]. An analysis of the e+jets data using the probability density estimation method yields a cross-section that is consistent with the above result.

Book excerpt: We report a search for single top quark production with the CDF II detector using 2.1 fb−1 of integrated luminosity of p{bar p} collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV. The data selected consist of events characterized by large energy imbalance in the transverse plane and hadronic jets, and no identified electrons and muons, so the sample is enriched in W → [tau][nu] decays. In order to suppress backgrounds, additional kinematic and topological requirements are imposed through a neural network, and at least one of the jets must be identified as a b quark jet. We measure an excess of signal-like events in agreement with the standard model prediction, but inconsistent with a model without single top quark production by 2.1 standard deviations ([sigma]), with a median expected sensitivity of 1.4 [sigma]. Assuming a top quark mass of 175 GeV/c2 and ascribing the excess to single top quark production, the cross section is measured to be 4.9{sub -2.2}{sup +2.5} (stat+syst) pb, consistent with measurements performed in independent datasets and with the standard model prediction.

Book excerpt: The mass of the top quark is a fundamental parameter of the standard model (SM) and has to be determined experimentally. In this talk, I present the most recent measurements of the top quark mass in $p\bar p$ collisions at $\sqrt s=1.96$~TeV recorded by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The measurements are performed in final states containing two leptons, using 5.4~\fb of integrated luminosity, and one lepton, using 9.7~\fb of integrated luminosity. The latter constitutes the most precise single measurement of the mass of the top quark, corresponding to a relative precision of 0.43\%. I conclude with a combination of our results with the results by the CDF collaboration, attaining a relative precision of 0.37\%.

I will present the differential measurement of the tt-bar production cross section and the Tevatron combination of inclusive tt-bar cross section measurements; the first evidence of the production of single top quarks in the s-channel by D0 and the observation in combination with CDF. Furthermore, I will review the measurements of the forward-backward asymmetry in tt-bar events, and conclude with the world's most precise single measurement of the top quark mass, which is a fundamental parameter of the standard model, and present the Tevatron combination, which is the world's most precise determination of the top quark mass, with a relative precision of 0.37%.

We have searched for t{bar t} production in the dilepton and single lepton decay channels, with and without tagging of b quark jets. We observe 17 events with an expected background of 3.8 " 0.6 events. The probability for an upward fluctuation of the background to produce the observed signal is 2 x 10−6 (equivalent to 4.6 standard deviations). The kinematic properties of the excess events are consistent with top quark decay. We conclude that we have observed the top quark and measure its mass to be 19921{sup +19} (stat.) "22 (syst.) GeV/c2 and its production cross section to be 6.4 " 2.2 pb.

Book excerpt: We present a measurement of the t{anti t} production cross section in p{anti p} collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV and a measurement of top quark mass m{sub t} by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. The measurements are based on the data from the 1992- 1996 run during which the D0 detector was exposed to the integrated luminosity of approximately 125 pb−1. We observe 39 t{anti t} candidate events in the dilepton and lepton+jets decay channels with an expected background of 13.7 ± 2.2 events. We measure the top quark mass m{sub t} using a two constraint fit to m{sub t} in t{anti t} → bW {anti b}W− final states with one W decaying to q{anti q} and the other to e? or??. Events are binned in the fit mass versus a measure of probability for events to be the signal rather than a background. Likelihood fits to the data yield m{sub t} = 173.3 ± 5.6 (stat) ± 6.2 (syst) GeV/c2. For this mass we measure the t{anti t} production cross section to be 5.5 ± 1.8 pb.
