Book excerpt: The Higgs boson is an undiscovered elementary particle, thought to be a vital piece of the closely fitting jigsaw of particle physics. Like all particles, it has wave properties akin to those ripples on the surface of a pond which has been disturbed; indeed, only when the ripples travel as a well defined group is it sensible to speak of a particle at all. In quantum language the analogue of the water surface which carries the waves is called a field. Each type of particle has its own corresponding field. The Higgs field is a particularly simple one -- it has the same properties viewed from every direction, and in important respects in indistinguishable from empty space. Thus physicists conceive of the Higgs field being "switched on", pervading all of space and endowing it with "grain" like that of a plank of wood. The direction of the grain in undetectable, and only becomes important once the Higgs' interactions with other particles are taken into account. for instance, particles call vector bosons can travel with the grain, in which case they move easily for large distances and may be observed as photons - that is, particles of light that we can see or record using a camera; or against, in which case their effective range is much shorter, and we call them W or Z particles. These play a central role in the physics of nuclear reactions, such as those occurring in the core of the sun. The Higgs field enables us to view these apparently unrelated phenomenon as two sides of the same coin; both may be described in terms of the properties of the same vector bosons. When particles of matter such as electrons or quarks (elementary constituents of protons and neutrons, which in turn constitute the atomic nucleus) travel through the grain, they are constantly flipped "head-over-heels". this forces them to move more slowly than their natural speed, that of light, by making them heavy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Standard Model (SM) of particle physics fundamentally relies on the existence of the Higgs boson. This massive particle is a relic of the underlying and hidden Higgs field, whose transformation into the Higgs boson provides mass to weak bosons and all massive fermions in the SM. This particle has been long-sought and finally using data from proton-proton collisions at the LHC, CMS and ATLAS experiments have discovered a particle which is compatible with the SM Higgs boson. Presented here is the develeopment of one of the discovery channels, H [right arrow] [gamma][gamma], and the final H [right arrow] [gamma][gamma] analysis and results using the full luminosity of the LHC Run 1 dataset ~25 fb−1 at 7 or 8 TeV center of mass energy. The observed (expected) significance of this di-photon excess in the final analysis is 5.7[sigma] (5.2[sigma]) with a measured signal strength of [sigma][sigma]SM = 1.14+0̇·26/−0·23. The mass of this Higgs boson is not predicted by the SM. Using the H [right arrow] [gamma][gamma] channel, Mh is measured to be 124.70+0̇·35/+0̇·34 GeV. Other measured quantities are presented including the signal strength modifiers of different production mechanisms and spin hypothesis tests between spin-0 and spin-2 models. Searches for this Higgs boson decaying to the di-muon and di-electron states are presented. No excess is observed and universal lepton decays of this particle are therefore ruled out, supporting the SM Higgs boson interpretation. In addition, relevant searches, observations and measurements from CMS that characterize this particle are presented.

Book excerpt: This Thesis describes the first measurement of, and constraints on, Higgs boson production in the vector boson fusion mode, where the Higgs decays to b quarks (the most common decay channel), at the LHC. The vector boson fusion mode, in which the Higgs is produced simultaneously with a pair of quark jets, provides an unparalleled opportunity to study the detailed properties of the Higgs, including the possibility of parity and CP violation, as well as its couplings and mass. It thus opens up this new field of study for precision investigation as the LHC increases in energy and intensity, leading the way to this new and exciting arena of precision Higgs research.

Book excerpt: The Higgs decay into a photon and a Z boson, with the Z boson decaying into an electron-positron pair (electron channel) or muon-antimuon pair (muon channel), allows for accurate reconstructions of the Higgs boson mass and measurement of the Higgs to Z-[gamma] coupling. We explore selection criteria for the photon and the two leptons and provide preliminary observed and expected limits for the Higgs boson production cross section in the mass range from 120 GeV to 150 GeV. The data used in this analysis was collected with the CMS detector and corresponds to 5 fb- 1 and 19 fb-1 at center-of-mass energies of 7 TeV and 8 TeV, respectively.

Book excerpt: We present searches for Higgs bosons decaying to the di-photon final state using up to 5.4 fb−1 of data at a center-of-mass energy of (square root)s = 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. Whilst the branching ratio to the di-photon final state is small in the Standard Model, this channel contributes appreciably to the overall Higgs sensitivity at the Tevatron. In parallel, the limit is re-interpreted in fermiophobic models where the di-photon branching ratio is considerably larger. This decay channel will be of major importance in the light mass Standard Model Higgs search at the LHC.

Leon Lederman embraces this spirit of inquiry as he moves from the Greeks' earliest scientific observations to Einstein and beyond to chart this unique arm of scientific study. His survey concludes with the Higgs boson, nicknamed the God Particle, which scientists hypothesize will help unlock the last secrets of the subatomic universe, quarks and all--it's the dogged pursuit of this almost mystical entity that inspires Lederman's witty and accessible history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a hadron collider, diphoton ([gamma][gamma]) production allows detailed studies of the Standard Model (SM), as well as as searches for new phenomena, such as new heavy resonances, extra spatial dimensions or cascade decays of heavy new particles. Within the SM, continuum [gamma][gamma]+X production is characterized by a steeply-falling [gamma][gamma] mass spectrum, on top of which a heavy resonance decaying into [gamma][gamma] can potentially be observed. In particular, this is considered one of the most promising discovery channels for a SM Higgs boson at the LHC, despite the small branching ratio of BR (H 2![gamma][gamma]) H"0.2% for 110 M{sub Higgs} 140 GeV. At the Tevatron, the dominant SM Higgs boson production mechanism is gluon fusion, followed by associated production with a W or Z boson, and vector boson fusion. While the SM Higgs production rate at the Tevatron is not sufficient to observe it in the [gamma][gamma] mode, the Hgg and H[gamma][gamma] couplings, being loop-mediated, are particularly sensitive to new physics effects. Furthermore, in some models beyond the SM, for instance, fermiophobic Higgs, with no couplings to fermions, the BR (H 2![gamma][gamma]) can be enhanced significantly relative to the SM prediction, while has the SM-like production cross sections except the gluon fusion is absent. In this thesis, we present a search for a light Higgs boson in the diphoton final state using 4.2 ± 0.3 fb−1 of the D0 Run II data, collected at the Fermilab Tevatron collider from April 2002 to December 2008. Good agreement between the data and the SM background prediction is observed. Since there is no evidence for new physics, we set 95% C.L. limits on the production cross section times the branching ratio ([sigma] x BR(H 2![gamma][gamma])) relative to the SM-like Higgs prediction for different assumed Higgs masses. The observed limits ([sigma](limit)/[sigma](SM)) range from 11.9 to 35.2 for Higgs masses from 100 to 150 GeV, while the expected limits range from 17.5 to 32.0. This search is also interpreted in the context of the particular fermiophobic Higgs model. The corresponding results have reached the same sensitivity as a single LEP experiement, setting a lower limit on the fermiophobic Higgs of M{sub h{sub f}} 102.5 GeV (M{sub h{sub f}} 107.5 GeV expected). We are slightly below the combined LEP limit (M{sub h{sub f}}> 109.7 GeV). We also provide access to the M{sub h{sub f}}> 125 GeV region which was inaccessible at LEP. During the study, we found the major and irreducible background direct [gamma][gamma] (DPP) production is not well modelled by the current theoretical predictions: RESBOS, DIPHOX or PYTHIA. There is H"0% theoretical uncertainty for the predicted values. Thus, for our Higgs search, we use the side-band fitting method to estimate DPP contribution directly from the data events. Furthermore, DPP production is also a significant background in searches for new phenomena, such as new heavy resonances, extra spatial dimensions, or cascade decays of heavy new particles. Thus, precise measurements of the DPP cross sections for various kinematic variables and their theoretical understanding are extremely important for future Higgs and new phenomena searches. In this thesis, we also present a precise measurement of the DPP single differential cross sections as a function of the diphoton mass, the transverse momentum of the diphoton system, the azimuthal angle between the photons, and the polar scattering angle of the photons, as well as the double differential cross sections considering the last three kinematic variables in three diphoton mass bins, using 4.2 fb−1 data. These results are the first of their kind at D0 Run II, and in fact the double differential measurements are the first of their kind at Tevatron. The results are compared with different perturbative QCD predictions and event generators.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With 4.8~$\rm{fb}^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data collected at $\sqrt{s}=7~\rm{TeV}$ in 2011, and 5.9~$\rm{fb}^{-1}$ collected at $\sqrt{s}=8~\rm{TeV}$ in 2012 by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider, an excess of 4.5 standard deviations from the background-only hypothesis is observed near 126.5~GeV in the diphoton invariant mass spectra. Along with the excesses observed in the $H \rightarrow ZZ^{(*)}\rightarrow \ell\ell\ell\ell$ and $H \rightarrow WW^{(*)}\rightarrow \ell\nu\ell\nu$ channels, the observation of a Higgs-like particle is established at 6.0 standard deviations level. With more data accumulated during LHC Run~1, the measurements of Higgs boson couplings and mass in the $H\to\gamma\gamma$ channel are conducted by the ATLAS experiment based on 4.5~$\rm{fb}^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7~\rm{TeV}$ collected in 2011, and 20.3~$\rm{fb}^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s}=8~\rm{TeV}$ collected in 2012. The combined signal strength, defined as number of observed Higgs boson decays to diphoton divided by the corresponding Standard Model prediction, is measured to be $1.17 \ ^{+0.28}_{-0.26}$ assuming the Higgs boson mass being 125.4~$\rm{GeV}$. The signal strengths for individual Higgs boson production processes are also measured, and are found to be in good consistency with the Standard Model. The mass of the Higgs boson is measured in $H\to\gamma\gamma$ channel by the ATLAS experiment to be $125.98 \pm 0.50$~\GeV. This measurement is combined with the ones from ATLAS $H \rightarrow ZZ^{(*)}\rightarrow \ell\ell\ell\ell$ as well as CMS $H\to\gamma\gamma$ and $H \rightarrow ZZ^{(*)}\rightarrow \ell\ell\ell\ell$. The Higgs boson mass measured from the combination is $125.09\pm0.24~\rm{GeV}$. With LHC center-of-mass energy increased to 13~TeV, a search for high mass Beyond the Standard Model scalar resonance is performed in the diphoton decay channel based on 15.4~$\rm{fb}^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector during 2015 and 2016. While a notable wide excess was first observed in the diphoton invariant mass spectrum from the 2015 data (3.2~$\rm{fb}^{-1}$) with mass near 750~GeV, it is not confirmed by the 2016 data with much higher statistics (12.4~$\rm{fb}^{-1}$). Limits on the production cross section times branching ratio of such resonances are set.

This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012, the diphoton ([gamma][gamma]) decay channel of the Higgs boson has been one of the most potent channels due to the contrast between the smoothly falling background and sharply peaked signal in the diphoton invariant mass. In 2018, with up to 80 fb-1 of data at [square root]s = 13 TeV, ATLAS observed Higgs boson production in association with a pair of top quarks (ttH) with a significance of 5.8 [sigma] by combining measurements in the [gamma][gamma], bb, ZZ, and multi-lepton Higgs decay channels. The ttH production cross-section was measured to be 670 [plus or minus] 90 (stat) +110 -100 (syst) fb. The diphoton channel was one of the main contributors to this result, alone providing a significance of 4.1 [sigma]. With 140 fb-1, a search for non-resonant Higgs pair production in the bb[gamma][gamma] final state was performed. No significant signal was observed and upper limits at 95% confidence level were set. The observed limit on the SM cross-section was 130 fb, or 4.2 times the predicted value. The observed Higgs trilinear coupling modifier was constrained to be between [-1.5, 6.7]. Both the ttH (H [rightwards arrow] [gamma][gamma]) and HH bb[gamma][gamma] analyses will benefit tremendously from the increased statistics expected from the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). To ensure the continued efficiency of the detector in the harsh HL-LHC environment, ATLAS will install a new Inner Tracker (ITk) consisting of silicon pixel sensors in its innermost layer. At SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, a variety of electrical tests are performed for the construction of a prototype integrated pixel system, in order to provide early feedback and validation of the ITk design.

Book excerpt: A search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying into two Z bosons with subsequent decay into a final state containing two quark jets and two leptons, H to ZZ(*) to q q-bar l-l+ is presented. Results are based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 inverse femtobarns of proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. In order to discriminate between signal and background events, kinematic and topological quantities, including the angular spin correlations of the decay products, are employed. Events are further classified according to the probability of the jets to originate from quarks of light or heavy flavor or from gluons. No evidence for the Higgs boson is found, and upper limits on its production cross section are determined for a Higgs boson of mass between 130 and 600 GeV.
