Book excerpt: We report on a search for neutrino oscillations of the type nu/sub .mu./ .-->. nu/sub e/ in a detector located an effective distance of 96m from the neutrino source in the wide band neutrino beam at the Brookhaven AGS. No excess of electron events was observed. The resulting upper limit on the strength of the mixing between nu/sub .mu./ and nu/sub e/ in the case of large mass difference .delta.m2 = absolute value m12 - m22 between the neutrino mass eigenstates m1 and m2 is sin22.cap alpha. less than or equal to 3.4 x 10−3 at 90% CL. The corresponding upper limit for small mass difference is .delta.m2sin2.cap alpha.

Book excerpt: The present paper reports on preliminary results from the E 816 experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory. E 816 is the continuation of a 1984 experiment (PS 191) which was devoted to a neutrino decay search in the CERN PS neutrino beam. No candidate was seen, but a study of neutrino interactions in the calorimeter indicated an anomalous electron production. The statistics was too low and the experiment has been rerun in spring 86 at BNL to look specifically, with an improved detector for nu/sub e/ arising from a low energy nu/sub .mu./ beam. The results presented here are preliminary for at least two reasons: first the collaboration is presently running a calibration test which results are not included here; second, only 1/3 of the neutrino data is used, and no mention will be made to antineutrino data for which the analysis is still going on. This report will directly start with a description of our apparatus, followed by the data analysis.

The proton momentum (1.5 GeV/c) was chosen to concentrate the .nu./sub .mu./ flux at very low energy where all background reactions are kinematically suppressed. Sensitivity to oscillations at large proper times tau Varies as l/p (where l is the flight length and p is the momentum of the neutrino) is greatly enhanced by the resulting low neutrino momentum. Possible transformations .nu./sub .mu./ .-->. .nu./sub e/ (searched for via .nu./sub e/n .-->. e−p reactions) were not observed in an exposure of 2 x 1018 protons on target. Ten possible .nu./sub .mu./n .-->. .mu.−p events were observed. An upper limit of 3 eV, comparable to previous limits, can be placed on the mass difference between the two neutrino eigenstates. The accelerator backgrounds are low and the neutrino fluxes copious so that an experiment to approach a mass difference limit of less than or equal to 1 eV is currently possible. Future experiments with longer distances and larger masses could reach 0.1 eV at the AGS, comparable to the best limits proposed in other accelerator and reactor experiments. 34 references.

Book excerpt: This paper attempts to summarize the neutrino oscillation section of the Workshop on Future Directions in Particle and Nuclear Physics at Multi-GeV Hadron Beam Facilities. There were very lively discussions about the merits of the different oscillation channels, experiments, and facilities, but we believe a substantial consensus emerged. First, the next decade is one of great potential for discovery in neutrino physics, but it is also one of great peril. The possibility that neutrino oscillations explain the solar neutrino and atmospheric neutrino experiments, and the indirect evidence that Hot Dark Matter (HDM) in the form of light neutrinos might make up 30% of the mass of the universe, point to areas where accelerator-based experiments could play a crucial role in piecing together the puzzle. At the same time, the field faces a very uncertain future. The LSND experiment at LAMPF is the only funded neutrino oscillation experiment in the United States and it is threatened by the abrupt shutdown of LAMPF proposed for fiscal 1994. The future of neutrino physics at the Brookhaven National Laboratory AGS depends the continuation of High Energy Physics (HEP) funding after the RHIC startup. Most proposed neutrino oscillation searches at Fermilab depend on the completion of the Main Injector project and on the construction of a new neutrino beamline, which is uncertain at this point. The proposed KAON facility at TRIUMF would provide a neutrino beam similar to that at the AGS but with a much increase intensity. The future of KAON is also uncertain. Despite the difficult obstacles present, there is a real possibility that we are on the verge of understanding the masses and mixings of the neutrinos. The physics importance of such a discovery can not be overstated. The current experimental status and future possibilities are discussed below.

Both are two detector experiments with a close detector at approx. = 100m and a far detector at approx. = 900m. While the details of the experiments are quite different, both groups expect to obtain nu/sub .mu./ disappearance limits of delta m2sin2 theta approx. = 0.1 - 0.2 for small mass difference and sin22 theta at the few percent level for the most sensitive delta m2(approx. = 25eV2). Since both detectors are designed to identify electrons as well as muons they expect to obtain significant limits on nu/sub e/ appearance (nu/sub .mu./ .-->. nu/sub e/). Each has received approval for a single detector (Phase I) experiment with the two detector phase (Phase II) still pending. The present status of the single detector experiments is detailed. (WHK).

Book excerpt: A simple, straightforward, and economic experiment utilizing a set of water Cherenkov counters is proposed to search for neutrino oscillations in the AGS neutrino beam. The detector will be movable and will be able to provide reasonable counting rates up to 2 km downstream of the pion decay tunnel. Whereas previous accelerator experiments have sought to increase the ratio l/p (with l the neutrino path length and p its momentum) by decreasing p, increasing l is suggested instead. Further, by making measurements at several different values of l with the same apparatus, many sources of systematic error are eliminated. The experiment will measure beam-associated muon- and electron-type events at each position. A change in the ratio of muon- to electron-type events as a function of position would be evidence for .nu./sub .mu./ + .nu./sub e/ oscillations. Sensitivity in terms of (.delta.m)2 (the square of the mass difference in the mass eigenstates) can be as low as 0.1 eV2, for full mixing, which is below the most probable value found by Reines et al for .delta.m2 in their electron neutrino reactor experiment. This experiment would be parasitic, running behind the usual neutrino beam experiments, assuming the nominal beam energy (peaked at 1 GeV), and would thus make a minimal demand on AGS support. It is suggested that the first two measurements be made inside the Isabelle tunnel at the points of intersection with the AGS neutrino beam. No further excavations would be required, and the data could be taken before ISA equipment is installed.
