As the main scientific analysis, a search for high-energy neutrino emission from the region of the Fermi bubbles has been performed using data from the ANTARES detector. A method for the background estimation using off-zones has been developed specially for this measurement. A new likelihood for the limits calculation which treats both observations in the on-zone and in the off-zone in the similar way and also includes different systematic uncertainties has been constructed. The analysis of 2008–2011 ANTARES data yielded a 1.2 σ excess of events in the Fermi bubble regions, compatible with the no-signal hypothesis. For the optimistic case of no energy cutoff in the flux, the upper limit is within a factor of three of the prediction of the purely hadronic model based on the measured gamma-ray flux. The sensitivity improves as more data are accumulated (more than 65% gain in the sensitivity is expected once 2012–2016 data are added to the analysis).

Book excerpt: The IceCube Neutrino Observatory0́4a cubic-kilometer of instrumented ice at the geographic South Pole0́4has been observing a high-energy astrophysical neutrino flux since 2010. However, a steady source of these neutrinos is yet to be identified. Possible candidates contributing to the high-energy neutrino flux include extended sources (spanning a few degrees) originating from within the Milky Way. Such sources have been discovered in the very-high-energy gamma-ray sky along the Galactic plane with experiments such as HAWC and H.E.S.S. If the emission from these extended sources is of a hadronic origin, an associated flux of neutrinos from the decay of pions is also expected to be observed. Therefore, an observation of neutrino emission from these extended gamma-ray sources would provide direct insight into cosmic-ray acceleration in the galaxy. Two approaches to performing dedicated searches for extended sources along the Galactic plane with nine years of IceCube data will be discussed. With these two approaches, no significant sources were found and the results are consistent with background. While IceCube has revealed the existence of sources of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos, the identification of the sources is challenging because astrophysical neutrinos are difficult to separate from the background of atmospheric neutrinos produced in cosmic-ray-induced particle cascades in the atmosphere. The efficient detection of air showers in coincidence with detected neutrinos can greatly reduce those backgrounds and increase the sensitivity of neutrino telescopes. Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) are sensitive to gamma-ray-induced (and cosmic-ray-induced) air showers in the 50 GeV to 50 TeV range, and can therefore be used as background-identifiers for neutrino observatories. The feasibility of an array of small scale, wide field-of-view, cost-effective IACTs as an air shower veto for neutrino astronomy will be discussed. A surface array of 250 to 750 telescopes would significantly improve the performance of a cubic kilometer-scale detector like IceCube, at a cost of a few percent of the original investment. The number of telescopes in the array can be optimized based on astronomical and geometrical considerations.

Detection of high energy neutrinos of extragalactic origin has led to an interdisciplinary field of research, involving astronomy, astrophysics and particle physics. An extensive review of various detectors and the observations is provided that consolidates the latest findings. Above a few tens of TeVs, neutrinos are conceived as more reliable messengers for astronomy than photons as these photons get absorbed in the background photon field. Determining the neutrino spectrum not only helps in exploring astrophysical objects like AGN, GRB, etc. but also allows us to study particle physics at unprecedented energies. This introductory book is intended to help advanced undergraduate and graduate students to get into the subject with ease, and it simultaneously caters to practicing theoretical or experimental physicists as a reference book.

Potential sources of cosmic neutrinos are, for example, Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) or Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). In the case of hadronic cosmic rays acceleration, the production of neutrinos is possibly accompanied by high-energy gamma-ray emissions. The search for coincidences between high-energy neutrinos detected by the ANTARES neutrino telescope and gamma-rays detected by the HAWC gamma-ray observatory is presented. Searching in a particular time window significantly reduces the background noise in the neutrino data and thus increases the discovery potential. In this thesis, the results of a search for neutrinos detected in correlation with a gamma-ray signal from two particular AGNs, Markarian 421 and Markarian 501, are presented. As the blazars closest to Earth, they are excellent sources for testing the blazar-neutrino connection scenario, especially during the increase of their activities (flares) in which the search for neutrinos may have a higher detection probability.

Book excerpt: Abstract Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are the most luminous transient events in the observed Universe. However, there is no direct observational evidence for what exactly drives a GRB. The most widely accepted model for these cosmic events is the fireball model where it is thought that a substantial fraction of the kinetic energy of the source is converted to gamma-radiation by shock accelerated electrons emitting synchrotron and inverse-Compton radiation. The acceleration of protons in the gamma-ray emitting region of the GRB has been hypothesized as well. In this hadronic acceleration model, it is predicted that protons may interact with gamma-ray photons to produce a burst of neutrinos at energy ∼10^14 eV during prompt emission and energy ∼10^18 eV during afterglow emission. Several experimental searches for these high energy neutrinos have been conducted and no GRB neutrinos have yet been found. The analytical prediction for neutrino flux has been replaced with a more thorough numerical prediction for neutrino flux. The neutron model of GRBs, where only neutrons can escape the GRB and reach Earth as cosmic rays, has been ruled out by the experimental work of IceCube and ANTARES. Upgraded versions of current experiments such as IceCube, ANTARES, ANITA and ARA, as well as new experiments such as KM3NeT, are preparing to probe and further constrain the fireball paradigm of GRB neutrino production. This review includes: Introduction Early theoretical predictions for neutrino fluences due to GRBs Overview of high energy neutrino experiments and related physics Experimental searches for high energy neutrinos from GRBs Prospects for detection of high energy neutrinos from GRBs High Energy Neutrinos from Gamma Ray Bursts: Theoretical Predictions, Experimental Searches, and Prospects for Detection was originally written as a review submitted for my Ph.D. candidacy paper on Nov 23, 2015. Book excerpt: Astroparticle physics is a branch of physics related to the study of the most violent astrophysical phenomena in the Universe such as Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) or Gamma Ray Bursts (GRB), which emit different cosmic messengers such as neutrinos, gravitational waves, electromagnetic radiation and charged particles. A proper understanding of these objects involves then a multi-messenger approach, in which neutrinos play a fundamental role. Thanks to their physical properties, neutrinos allow us to explore the physical phenomena produced in the densest astrophysical environments and to observe the Universe at large distances. This thesis is divided into three main parts. The first part is composed by three chapters dedicated to the scientific context in which the rest of the thesis is developed. In the first chapter, the scientific motivations for the search of high energy cosmic neutrinos are described. In chapter 2, a description of the main properties of AGN are given. These sources have been chosen as "test" objects in the research of potential neutrino sources. Finally, the third chapter is dedicated to the detection principle and main results of the currently operating neutrino telescopes. The second part of the thesis is dedicated to the technical description of the ANTARES neutrino telescope, and composed of two chapters. Chapter 4 describes the ANTARES telescope, the data acquisition and the data selection. In the last part of this chapter, the work made to measure the efficiency loss of the photomultipliers (PMTs) by using the baseline rates is described. Chapter 5 is dedicated to the Monte Carlo simulations. The different simulation packages used by the ANTARES collaboration are presented, and the different simulated processes are described. A contribution to the official package for the generation of neutrino interactions, relative to the implementation of the propagation and decay of the tau leptons, is described. The third part is dedicated to the search of potential cosmic signals in the events recorded by ANTARES. It comprises four chapters. Chapter 6 is a description of the signal search method, chapter 7 presents the principles of an analysis based on a 2 point correlation function that will be applied in chapter 9 with the purpose of searching for an excess of cosmic neutrinos characterized by an expected spatial distribution which is different from that of atmospheric neutrinos. This method is well suited for the detection of the collective effect produced by populations of weak point-like sources. Chapter 8 describes the simulation of the neutrino flux emitted by AGN. By using the luminosity function for different AGN classes obtained from X-ray observations, and the ANTARES acceptance, neutrinos coming from AGN populations are simulated as a function of two parameters which are related to the number of sources in the population, and to their luminosities. The analysis of these populations with the 2 point correlation function is detailed in chapter 9.

Book excerpt: The ANTARES collaboration has successfully built, deployed and is currently operating an underwater Cherenkov detector dedicated to high energy neutrino astronomy. The primary aim of the experiment is to detect cosmic sources of neutrinos in order to reveal the production sites of cosmic rays. Among the sources likely to be significant sources of neutrinos are those accelerating relativistic jets, like gamma ray bursts, active galactic nuclei and microquasars. Microquasars are binary systems formed by a compact object accreting mass from a companion star. The mass transfer causes the emission of X-rays, whereas the onset of magnetic forces in the accreting plasma can cause the acceleration of relativistic jets, which are observed by radio telescopes via their non-thermal synchrotron emission. In some systems, a correlation between X-ray and radio light curves indicates an interplay between accretion and ejection respectively. Some microquasars are also high energy and very high energy gamma ray emitters. In this thesis, a time dependent search for neutrino emission from microquasars was performed with a multi-messenger approach (photon/neutrino). The data from the X-ray monitors RXTE/ASM and SWIFT/BAT, and the gamma-ray telescope FERMI/LAT were used to select transient events in which the source was supposed to accelerate relativistic jets. The restriction of the analysis to the ejection periods allows a drastic reduction of atmospheric muon and neutrino background, and thus to increase the chances of a discovery. The search was performed with the ANTARES data taken between 2007 and 2010.

More recently, the Galactic plane of the Milky Way has been observed in every wavelength of the electromagnetic spectrum, from radio waves to infrared, optical, x-rays, and gamma rays. This thesis presents the first observation of the Galactic plane in high-energy neutrinos, marking the first observation in a particle other than light. Within our Galaxy, high-energy neutrinos can be produced when cosmic rays interact at their acceleration sites and during propagation through the interstellar medium. Using a new sample of neutrinos with energies ranging from 500 GeV to multi-PeV, a test of a diffuse neutrino emission model from the Galactic plane finds a 4.5[sigma] rejection of the background-only hypothesis. This observation was enabled by machine-learning techniques that improved the selection efficiency and angular resolution of cascade-like neutrino events in IceCube.

Book excerpt: We present the results of multiple electromagnetic searches for counterparts of high energy neutrinos detected by the IceCube and ANTARES neutrino observatories. A long standing problem in astrophysics is the cosmic ray origin problem. Due to their electric charge, cosmic rays deflect in the interstellar and intergalactic magnetic fields, obfuscating their origins. Similarly, the origins of high energy neutrinos are largely unknown, with only one positively identified source, the blazar TXS 0506+056.Multimessenger astrophysics offers a method to discover the sources of high energy cosmic rays and neutrinos. The mechanisms that produce cosmic rays and neutrinos are very likely to also produce high energy -rays. Coincident searches for -rays and neutrinos have the potential to reveal the sources of high energy cosmic rays and neutrinos. Such searches have already borne fruit, with the coincident detection of TXS 0506+056.This thesis details several searches for + transients, their results, and what they may indicate for future searches. The first search detailed is a blazar flare analysis, looking for neutrinos coincident with TeV -rays from several bright northern blazars. This search found a statistical excess of neutrinos during blazar flares, but indicated that the blazar Markarian 421 is a strong candidate for either detecting or limiting neutrino emission from blazars. The second and third projects utilized the Fermi-LAT -ray data to search for electromagnetic counterparts to high energy neutrinos. These searches both looked for a population of subthreshold + transients, and for an excess of individually high significance + transients. Using neutrino data from the IceCube 40 and 59 string datasets, we found no evidence of a subthreshold population of + transients, and no individually high significance events. We did observe a trend for IC59 neutrinos to arrive in regions of the sky that were TeV bright (p=7%) and would like to see if this behavior persists in other neutrino datasets. Our search with archival ANTARES data likewise found no subthreshold population of + transients. In parallel with these searches, we also performed X-ray followup to IceCube detections of likely cosmic neutrinos using the Swift satellite. These searches are important to the field of multimessenger astrophysics as they are what led to the detection of the neutrino emitting blazar TXS 0506+056. Targeted coincidence searches, especially time sensitive searches, are essential to finding more neutrino sources and identifying the sources of high-energy cosmic rays.

Book excerpt: This book introduces the reader to how fundamental topics in particle physics can be studied with the largest neutrino telescopes currently in operation. Due to their large size, reaching cubic-kilometer volumes, and their wide energy response, these unusual detectors can provide insight on neutrino oscillations, dark matter searches or searches for exotic particles, new neutrino interactions or extra dimensions, among many other topics.Lacking a man-made neutrino 'beam', neutrino telescopes use the copious flux of neutrinos continuously produced by cosmic rays interacting in the Earth's atmosphere, as well as neutrinos from astrophysical origin. They have therefore access to neutrinos of higher energies and much longer baselines than those produced in present accelerators, being able to search for new physics at complementary scales than currently available in particle physics laboratories around the world.Written by carefully chosen experts in the field, the book introduces each topic in a pedagogical way apt not only to professionals, but also to students or the interested reader with a background in physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A century after their discovery, the origin of cosmic rays remains one of the most enduring mysteries in physics. They can have energies that exceed 1020 eV, a hundred million times as energetic as the most powerful Earth-bound particle accelerators and must therefore be produced in the universe's most violent environments. Direct observation of their origins, however, has proven difficult due to deflection of charged cosmic ray particles in galactic and intergalactic magnetic fields, obscuring their true origins. Astronomy using electrically neutral particles, such as photons and neutrinos, does not, however, share this difficulty. This work presents a search for neutrino emission from one of the primary candidates for the sources of the highest-energy cosmic rays, Gamma-Ray Bursts, using the recently-completed IceCube neutrino telescope located at the South Pole. The null result obtained from this search contradicts well-established predictions for the neutrino flux from Gamma-Ray Bursts if they are the cosmic ray sources, forcing a reevaluation of these theoretical models.
