Book Synopsis The Evolution of Economic Diversity by : Antonio Nicita
Download or read book The Evolution of Economic Diversity written by Antonio Nicita and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The traditional role of evolutionary theory in the social sciences has been to explain the existence of an object in terms of the survival of the fittest. In economics this approach has acted as a justification for hypotheses such as profit maximisation, or the existence of institutions in terms of their overall efficiency. This volume challenges that view and argues that one of the first tasks of economic theory should be to explain the enormous diversity of institutional arrangements that has characterised human societies.
Book Synopsis Money, Payments, and Liquidity by : Ed Nosal
Download or read book Money, Payments, and Liquidity written by Ed Nosal and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2011-10-28 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two experts in monetary policy offer a unified framework for studying the role of money and liquid assets in the economy. In Money, Payments, and Liquidity, Ed Nosal and Guillaume Rocheteau provide a comprehensive investigation into the economics of money and payments by explicitly modeling trading frictions between agents. Adopting the search-theoretic approach pioneered by Nobuhiro Kiyotaki and Randall Wright, Nosal and Rocheteau provide a logically coherent dynamic framework to examine the frictions in the economy that make money and liquid assets play a useful role in trade. They discuss the implications of such frictions for the suitable properties of a medium of exchange, monetary policy, the cost of inflation, the inflation-output trade-off, the coexistence of money, credit, and higher return assets, settlement, and liquidity. After presenting the basic environment used throughout the book, Nosal and Rocheteau examine pure credit and pure monetary economies, and discuss the role of money, different pricing mechanisms, and the properties of money. In subsequent chapters they study monetary policy, the Friedman rule in particular, and the relationship between inflation and output under different information structures; economies where monetary exchange coexists with credit transactions; the coexistence of money and other assets such as another currency, capital, and bonds; and a continuous-time version of the model that describes over-the-counter markets and different dimensions of liquidity (bid-ask spreads, trade volume, trading delays).
Book Synopsis Handbook of Monetary Economics vols 3A+3B Set by : Benjamin M. Friedman
Download or read book Handbook of Monetary Economics vols 3A+3B Set written by Benjamin M. Friedman and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2010-11-10 with total page 1729 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How have monetary policies matured during the last decade? The recent downturn in economies worldwide have put monetary policies in a new spotlight. In addition to their investigations of new tools, models, and assumptions, they look carefully at recent evidence on subjects as varied as price-setting, inflation persistence, the private sector's formation of inflation expectations, and the monetary policy transmission mechanism. They also reexamine standard presumptions about the rationality of asset markets and other fundamentals. Stopping short of advocating conclusions about the ideal conduct of policy, the authors focus instead on analytical methods and the changing interactions among the ingredients and properties that inform monetary models. The influences between economic performance and monetary policy regimes can be both grand and muted, and this volume clarifies the present state of this continually evolving relationship. - Presents extensive coverage of monetary policy theories with an eye toward questions raised by the recent financial crisis - Explores the policies and practices used in formulating and transmitting monetary policies - Questions fiscal-monetary connnections and encourages new thinking about the business cycle itself - Observes changes in the formulation of monetary policies over the last 25 years

Book Synopsis Renewing the Search for a Monetary Constitution by : Lawrence H. White
Download or read book Renewing the Search for a Monetary Constitution written by Lawrence H. White and published by Cato Institute. This book was released on 2015-02-16 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 50 years ago, In Search of a Monetary Constitution, which focused on the need for constraints on the creation of money by the government, was published. Although overlooked at the time, the work's analysis has proven to be remarkably prescient. This new collection of essays, Renewing the Search for a Monetary Constitution: Reforming Government's Role in the Monetary System, commemorates the 50th anniversary of the first edition by revisiting and re-energizing the original intent. Since the publication of the original book, central banks have delivered neither sound money nor real growth; instead, chronic inflation and a series of booms and busts have prevailed. In this new collection, scholars call for monetary reform centered on the debate over creating constitutional provisions that empower government versus provisions that prohibit government interference with money. The aim of Renewing the Search for a Monetary Constitution is to revitalize public discussion of constitutional monetary reform. It's a must-read for anyone who wants to change the domination of our monetary system by the government.

Download or read book John Hicks written by K. Puttaswamaiah and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economist Sir John Hicks was the first British economist to win the Nobel Prize in Economic Science (1972) for his wide ranging contributions in general and his book Value and Capital in particular. Value and Capital showed that the basic results of consumer theory could be obtained from statistical usage; it expounded what became known as the "Hicksian substitution effect." K. Puttaswamaiah describes Hicks as a brilliant economist without whose effort present-day economies would not have grown in such dimension by now and Value and Capital as a work that revolutionized the science of economics. John Hicks is a unique collection of essays that examine Hicks through personal recollections as well as critiques and analyses of his work. For this very special volume, K. Puttaswamaiah has gathered 25 contributors. Some were friends, colleagues, and students of Hicks. All are eminent in their own areas of Hicks' work. Their articles depict various aspects of the economist's thought and personality, some depicting him in a new light. "My John Hicks," by Paul A. Samuelson identifies the landmarks in Hicks' life. Colin Simkin's "John and Ursula Hicks-A Personal Recollection" gives a vivid account of the economist's inner life. O.F. Hamouda's essay, "Hicks, A World Economist" presents a scholarly and comprehensive analysis of Hicks' economics. In "Hicks and Economic Theory," Frank Kahn sets out his own views on the major works of Hicks. Harald Hagerman distinguishes between the works of Hicks and Hayek in "Monetary Causes of the Business Cycles and Technological Changes: Hicks vs. Hayek." Axel Lejonhufvud presents a memoriam on the life and works of Hicks. The other authors have chosen different areas of Hicks' works-sometimes focusing on a single work and giving a vivid account of their own thoughts on the area chosen. This volume will interest economists and students who are concerned with Hicks' works in relation to earlier thinkers and present-day economic theory. K. Puttaswamaiah is the senior director, Planning Department, Government of Karnataka State, India. He has written or edited fourteen books. He is the founding editor of the Indian (now International) Journal of Applied Economics & Econometrics.

Book Synopsis Monetary Plurality in Local, Regional and Global Economies by : Georgina M. Gómez
Download or read book Monetary Plurality in Local, Regional and Global Economies written by Georgina M. Gómez and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-09 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea that each country should have one currency is so deeply rooted in people’s minds that the possibility of multiple and concurrent currencies seems unthinkable. Monetary systems contribute to problems of high unemployment and social distress during financial and economic crisis, so reforms to increase the responsiveness and flexibility of the monetary system can be part of the solution. This book discusses ‘monetary plurality’, which is the circulation of several currencies at the same time and space. It addresses how multiple currency circuits work together and transform socio-economic systems, particularly by supporting economies at the local level of regions and cities. The book shows that monetary plurality has been ubiquitous throughout history and persists at present because the existence of several currency circuits facilitates small-scale production and trade in a way that no single currency can accomplish on its own. Monetary plurality can improve resilience, access to livelihoods and economic sustainability. At the same time, it introduces new risks in terms of economic governance, so it needs to be properly understood. The book analyses experiences of monetary plurality in Europe, Japan, and North and South America, written by researchers from East and West and from the global North and South. Replete with case studies, this book will prove a valuable addition to any student or practitioner’s bookshelf.

This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book for physicists, biologists, computer scientists, economists or social scientists shows in selected examples how computer simulation methods which are typical to statistical physics have been applied in other areas outside of physics. Our main part deals with the biology of ageing, while other examples are the functioning of the immune system, the structure of DNA, the fluctuations on the stock market, theories for sociology and for World War II. Are leaky water faucets similar to our heartbeats? Throughout the book we emphasize microscopic models dealing with the action of individuals, whether they are cells of the immune system or traders speculating on the currency market. Complete computer programs are given and explained for biological ageing. The references try to introduce the expert from the covered other fields to the relevant physics literature; and they also show the physicists the way into the biological literature on ageing.
