Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sea Puritans So Englishmen had at last flown at each other's throats, bulldog fashion the modern spirit had risen against the medieval spirit; shopkeeper, trades man, and mechanic were in arms against noble and professional soldier. On one side the passionate devotion of feudal times to a great central figure, the King, allied to an intense reverence for externals in religion, with its licence to live as one listed provided due tithe was paid to Mother Church on the other, a clogged desire to choose for one's self the most desirable form of Government, to pay no impost without knowing why, and to worship as a man would: these gigantic forces arrayed against each other had rent the realm in twain. Excerpt from book: m AS FALSE AS STAIRS OF SAND Merchant of Venice, v. 2 It was cold and gray next morning when Maurice took his way toward a Catholic church in the North End. He had been there before for confession, and had been not a little elated in his secret heart that he had been able to go through the act of confession and to receive absolution without betraying the fact that he was not a Romanist. He had studied the forms of confession, the acts of contrition, and whatever was necessary to the part, and for some months had gone on in this singular course. To his Superior at the Clergy House he confessed the same sins, but Maurice had a feeling that the absolution of the Roman priest was more effective than that of his own church. He was not conscious of any intention of becoming a Catholic, but there was a fascination in playing at being one; and Wynne, who could not understand how the folk of Boston could play with ethical truths, was yet able thus to juggle with religion with no misgiving. This morning he enjoyed the spiritual intoxication of the confessional as never before. He half consciously allowed himself to dwell upon the image of the beautiful Miss Morison to the end that he might the more effectively pour out his contrition for that sin. He was so eloquent in the confessional that he admired himself both for his penitence and for thewords in which he set it forth. He floated as it were in a sea of mingled sensuousness and repentance, and he hoped that the penance imposed would be heavy enough to show that the priest had been impressed with the magnitude of the sin of which he had been guilty in allowing his thoughts, consecrated to the holy life of the priesthood, to dwell upon a woman. It was one of those absurd anomalies of which life is full that while Maurice so...

One of them - perhaps as characteristic of his whole career as any - is that The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sab bath. The principle involved in this maxim is that which has developed into the splendid humanitarianism of Christian life and work to-day: although its full meaning is yet to appear. Thompson: Delivered Before the New England Society of Terre Haute, Indiana, December 20, 1868 About that time, in the year 1616, there was published in London a description of New England, by Captain John Smith, who had visited it two years before, with a map of the country which some of you will recollect, as I exhibited it to you at the formation of your Pilgrim Society two years ago. This is a curious book, well worthy of perusal, not only on account of its quaint old English style, but to show what ideas then prevailed of the geographical extent of this couns try. For example, it says: New England is that part of America in the Ocean Sea opposite to Nova Albyon in the South sea; discovered by the most memorable Sir Francis Drake in his voyage about the world. In regard whereto this is styled New England, being in the same latitude. New France, off it, is N orthward. Southward is Virginia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pilgrims and Puritans: Part 1: The Father of New England, Part 2: Colonial Folkways Landholding classes, gentry and tenant farmers alike, were clamoring, the one for an increase of their landed estates, the other for freedom from the feudal restraints which still legally bound them. The land-hunger of neither class could be satisfied in a narrow island where the law and the lawgivers were in favor of the maintenance of feudal rights. The expectations of all were aroused by visions of wealth from the El Dorados of the West, or [of profit from commercial enterprises which appealed to the cupidity of capitalists and led to invest ments that promised speedy and ample returns. A desire to improve social conditions and to solve the problem of the poor and the vagrant, which had become acute since the dissolution of the monasteries, was arousing the authorities to deal with the pauper and to dispose of the criminal in such a way as to yield a profitable service to the kingdom. England was full of resolute men, sea-dogs and soldiers of fortune, captains on the land as Well as the sea, who in times of peace were seeking employment and profit and who needed an outlet for their energies. Some of these continued in the service of kings and princes in Europe; others conducted enterprises against the Spaniards in the West Indies and along the Spanish Main. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of the Puritans: The Regicides; The Fair Pilgrim; Castine IT was a bitter afternoon in December, the air was intensely keen and piercing, the snow had indeed at length ceased falling, but the heavens looked drear and wintry. The ponds in the village of G were all frozen, not with that thin and glassy coating the first ray of sunshine dissolves; a smooth and substantial sur face now bore the buoyant tread of the skaters. A finer snow fall had not been known in the sea son, the solid and beautiful substance lay in glit tering expanse, on gardens and meadows, hills and dales, loading the trees with a new and fea thery foliage, and covering as with a mantle, eve ry deformity of the relentless season. It was now four o'clock, as was evident from the appearance of the common, in the centre of the village, thronged with children who were rushing delightedly from the walls of their lite rary prison. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Puritan, Vol. 2: A Series of Essays, Critical, Moral, and Miscellaneous Yet it is precisely these principles, formed by the coldest philosophers in their closets, that have had the greatest agency in exciting the popular passions, and setting the world on fire. Robespierre kept all France in commotion, and the guillotine moving, by certain abstract principles, taken from Helvetius and Rousseau; and I have seen religious books which seem to make the very fate of the gospel depend on the definition of virtue, i. E. That it is impartial benev olence. New England is not the only country, in which a lens of ice, taken from a polar sea of philoso phy, has become a glass to collect the rays of the sun to a focus, and pour them on the regions of the'burn ing line of popular excitement. Why is it so? How can so much passion come from such inadequate means? How can you make men fight for a meta physical abstraction? Nothing is more common and the reason is because the mind admires the vast, the immense, the indefinite and where the object is obscure, the passions will be proportionably inflamed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenging the formidable tradition that places early New England Puritanism at the center of the American religious experience, Yale historian Jon Butler offers a new interpretation of three hundred years of religious and cultural development. Butler stresses the instability of religion in Europe where state churches battled dissenters, magic, and astonishingly low church participation. He charts the transfer of these difficulties to America, including the failure of Puritan religious models, and describes the surprising advance of religious commitment there between 1700 and 1865. Through the assertion of authority and coercion, a remarkable sacralization of the prerevolutionary countryside, advancing religious pluralism, the folklorization of magic, and an eclectic, syncretistic emphasis on supernatural interventionism, including miracles, America emerged after 1800 as an extraordinary spiritual hothouse that far eclipsed the Puritan achievement--even as secularism triumphed in Europe. Awash in a Sea of Faith ranges from popular piety to magic, from anxious revolutionary war chaplains to the cool rationalism of James Madison, from divining rods and seer stones to Anglican and Unitarian elites, and from Virginia Anglican occultists and Presbyterians raised from the dead to Jonathan Edwards, Joseph Smith, and Abraham Lincoln. Butler deftly comes to terms with conventional themes such as Puritanism, witchcraft, religion and revolution, revivalism, millenarianism, and Mormonism. His elucidation of Christianity's powerful role in shaping slavery and of a subsequent African spiritual "holocaust," with its ironic result in African Christianization, is an especially fresh and incisive account. Awash in a Sea of Faith reveals the proliferation of American religious expression--not its decline--and stresses the creative tensions between pulpit and pew across three hundred years of social maturation. Striking in its breadth and deeply rooted in primary sources, this seminal book recasts the landscape of American religious and cultural history.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters on Puritanism and Nonconformity In fulfilling my promise of another series of "Letters," I feel it necessary to say little, especially after the somewhat lengthy Preface to the former volume. As on that occasion a reference to authorities was commonly avoided, that the pages might be kept unencumbered, the same course has again been pursued. The same attention has likewise been paid in recording the opinions of eminent men to their most matured sentiments; a point often of importance. Philip Henry was not the only one who grew wiser by experience, as well as years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
