Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Script Analysis for Theatre: Tools for Interpretation, Collaboration and Production provides theatre students and emerging theatre artists with the tools, skills and a shared language to analyze play scripts, communicate about them, and collaborate with others on stage productions. Based largely on concepts derived from Stanislavski's system of acting and method acting, the book focuses on action - what characters do to each other in specific circumstances, times, and places - as the engine of every play. From this foundation, readers will learn to distinguish the big picture of a script, dissect and 'score' smaller units and moment-to-moment action, and create individualized blueprints from which to collaborate on shaping the action in production from their perspectives as actors, directors, and designers. Script Analysis for Theatre offers a practical approach to script analysis for theatre production and is grounded in case studies of a range of the most studied plays, including Sophocles' Oedipus the King, Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, Henrik Ibsen's Hedda Gabler, Georg Büchner's Woyzeck, Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest, Tennessee Williams's A Streetcar Named Desire, and Paula Vogel's How I Learned to Drive, among others. Readers will develop the real-life skills professional theatre artists use to design, rehearse, and produce plays.

Book excerpt: 20 years ago I landed (what I then assumed to be) the role of my life. I was entirely unprepared on the inside and cocky and proud on the outside too afraid to share any fear or insecurities. When I opened my script and read it a few times (like "they" say we should) I realized I was out of my depth and likely to fail. I was just a rooky after all with little more than a handful of acting classes under my belt. So...I did a very smart thing...I turned to a friend who had just finished her Associates degree in Theater Arts and she game me the most important tidbit of knowledge I've learned to date. Do a script analysis! Do an in-depth character analysis! Take your scenes apart step by step and do a scene analysis. WHAT? I had no clue what that was or how it could help me so I was off to the library. The library wasn't any help at all so off to the bookstore! At the bookstore I found a dusty old ignored paperback giving minimal instruction and a bunch of nonsense that would do little to help me...and I couldn't write in it! What good is a script analysis that I could not take notes in! So I found myself a niche and decided to perfect my version of a script analysis that helped me not only land roles in the future. It helped me to be a better actor with a deeper knowledge and understanding of not only the role I landed but also the storyline in general. I've since given up acting and the spotlight for the director's chair and a family but anytime I have a budding actress that is struggling with her or his role I give her one of these books....they always thank me. I think you will too.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive step-by-step guide to deconstructing screenplay fundamentals, this book will allow readers to understand the elements, functions, and anatomy of a screenplay. Not only will this book enable readers to accomplish a thorough analysis of a screenplay and understand the dramatic elements and their functions, but screenwriters will be able to apply these steps to their own writing. The book explores theme and premise, provides an in-depth study of character development, and breaks down the dramatic elements needed to construct a solid screenplay. It provides examples of the three-act structure, the hero’s journey, and the sequence method. Furthermore, it explores how the main plot and subplots are used in a storyline and discusses the importance of setting. Finally, it reveals screenwriting techniques and tools used by professional screenwriters, such as dramatic irony, reversal, and setup/payoff. To connect with a broad range of readers, the case studies used in this book are mainly from contemporary films, including Get Out (2017), Lady Bird (2017), The Dark Knight (2008), Toy Story (1995), Parasite (2019), and Whiplash (2014). Readers will understand how professional screenwriters use fundamental elements to construct, shape, develop, and tell a visual story. After reading this book, readers will comprehend the components critical to developing a screenplay. This book is ideal for students of screenwriting and filmmaking who want to better understand how to comprehensively analyze a screenplay, as well as screenwriters who want to utilize this method to develop their own scripts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Page and Stage narrows the gulf between printed page and performance to make script analysis for production or academic study more effective, efficient, and insightful. This text discusses a method for script analysis based on the idea that plays consist of "organized tension" that involves the audience and organizes their response. It examines the many forms of tension in plays--between actor and character, between the stage and the world of the play, between the present and the past, and between characters--by looking at stage space and time and a wide range of plays from Greek times to the present. Page and Stage addresses the paradox that play scripts are not complete works of dramatic art, and yet contain implicitly, if not explicitly, the intended performance.

It illustrates how the concept aligns with the crime-specific orientation found in environmental criminology, and particularly explores the theoretical foundations of situational crime prevention, the approach to which it is deemed most relevant and supportive.div divThe volume provides clear guidance on how to apply script analysis in daily practice, covering its main building blocks and key features. These are illustrated by a series of case studies into various crime types. Moving beyond the use of script analysis with the intent to disrupt the crime-commission process, the author further explores the wider benefits of the approach to both academics and practitioners. He identifies what is needed most if we want to embrace the full potential of script analysis for preventive purposes. “/div>

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this indispensable companion to any theatre class in which scripts are read and interpreted, Pritner and Walters offer five sequential levels of reading designed to lead to a deep understanding of the text. Level one imagines the play as performed in front of an audience; level two examines the deep structure of the conflict; level three examines given circumstances and the type of relationship the play creates between the audience and the production; level four looks closely at characters’ behavior and reactions to their given circumstances, surveys conflict in each scene, and encourages supplemental research about the play; finally, level five synthesizes the information acquired from the preceding levels. Each chapter introduces a concept that is then explored by studying its application to The Glass Menagerie, chosen for both its accessibility and its complexity. Other plays discussed include works by Molière, Shakespeare, Sophocles, and August Wilson. End-of-chapter questions are applicable to any play.

Book excerpt: A stunning novel of hopes and dreams, guilt and love—a book that offers a resonant new definition of what it means to be American and "illuminates the lives behind the current debates about Latino immigration" (The New York Times Book Review). When fifteen-year-old Maribel Rivera sustains a terrible injury, the Riveras leave behind a comfortable life in Mexico and risk everything to come to the United States so that Maribel can have the care she needs. Once they arrive, it’s not long before Maribel attracts the attention of Mayor Toro, the son of one of their new neighbors, who sees a kindred spirit in this beautiful, damaged outsider. Their love story sets in motion events that will have profound repercussions for everyone involved. Here Henríquez seamlessly interweaves the story of these star-crossed lovers, and of the Rivera and Toro families, with the testimonials of men and women who have come to the United States from all over Latin America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Co-creative transactional analysis is an approach to a particular branch of psychology which, as the phrase suggests, emphasises the "co-" (mutual, joint) aspect of professional relationships, whether therapeutic, educative and/or consultative - and, by implication, of personal relationships. The "co-" of co-creative acknowledges the transactional, inter-relational, mutual, joint, and co-operative, as well as partnership. Developed by the authors over some fifteen years, the co-creative approach has found a resonance not only amongst psychotherapists, but also educationalists, consultants and coaches. The book itself represents and reflects the co-creative approach in that it is based on a critical dialogue between the authors themselves about their collaborative and independent work, as well as between invited contributors and the authors.
