Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Computer Science - Programming, grade: 2,0, University of Applied Sciences Technikum Vienna, language: English, abstract: For many years, smart home applications have played a major role in our households. Real-time monitoring everywhere via the web, retracting the awning at sunset or lighting tasks by movement: the versatility and flexible adaptation is normally reserved for more expensive systems. The aim of this thesis is to develop a radio board that offers the possibility to integrate all devices in the frequency range of 433 MHz due to a learning function except modules using rolling code or hoping code. Furthermore, a software interface to the programming language Scratch was developed, with which children and programming beginners can already program simple smart home applications without prior knowledge. In addition to the hardware and software requirements, the design of the circuit on a breadboard, the test of the prototype and the implementation of the software are described in this thesis. Finally, a simple smart home scenario will be programmed with the visual programming language Scratch.

Book excerpt: Discover how today's amazing inventions and technologies work while developing your coding skills In Smart Homes, find out about the technology that lives in our homes and buildings. Learn about motion sensors, create burglar alarms for your computer that use sound and motion to detect intruders. Each book goes inside a different machine or technology and explains the key computer code and systems that are controlling them. Step-by-step activities teach you how to create your own versions of these machines on screen, and bring them to life - with code! The focus is placed on modern technologies that actually use code to work, rather than looking back at steam engines, etc. This will keep the practice of coding firmly in the contemporary. Each book assumes readers have reasonable general computer skills. The series uses Scratch as the coding language, as this is still the most used, user-friendly and flexible in building projects, however no prior experience of Scratch is expected and each book will include a spread introducing Scratch. Teachers have always used ICT across the curriculum and are looking for contexts to teach coding in. Kids that are interested in STEAM and the high-interest topics covered, will be engaged by the opportunity to explore the STEAM concepts creatively with code. Perfect for readers aged 9 and up.

Cities are the largest, most complex, and most dynamic man-made systems. They are vibrant centers of cultural life and engines that drive the global economy. Contemporary cities are environmentally, socially, and economically unsustainable. The quality of urban life is threatened by such factors as pollution, rising temperatures, limited resources, congestion, social inequalities, aging of large sectors of the world population, poverty, informality, crime, and economic imbalances. The overall planning of future cities is a challenge that can only be faced by interdisciplinary teams combining multitudes of backgrounds and expertise. eCAADe "Education and Research in Computer Aided Architectural Design in Europe" eCAADe covers Europe, Middle East, North Africa and Western Asia and works in collaboration with the four other major international associations in the field: ACADIA , ASCAAD, CAADRIA, CAADFutures and SIGRADI. eCAADe has collaborated with these associations to devise an exciting international Journal for the field called the International Journal of Architectural Computing or short IJAC.

Book excerpt: Nowadays networks, microprocessors, memory chips, smart sensors and actuators are faster, cheaper and smaller than ever. They are becoming available anywhere, anytime. Current advances in such enabling technologies let foresee novel applications and services for improving the life of elderly and disabled people in their home and outside. These conference proceedings present the latest approaches and technical solutions in the area of smart homes, health telematics, and enabling technologies. The first chapter delves into the user perspective to ascertain real needs and design truly useful services. The following chapter explores the enabling technology. Distributed sensors, smart devices and networks appear as the nuts and bolts compulsory to build up smart homes. Chapter three looks at the realization of smart homes. Pervasive computing is emerging as one of the key approaches to organize computations within smart homes. The fourth chapter addresses the issue of using smart home features to design and deliver smart care services to persons with disabilities and elderly people. Finally Chapter five outlines standardization efforts and practical and industrial experiences. ICOST aims at creating an active research community dedicated to explore how smart homes in particular and health telematics in general can foster independent living and an enhanced life style for elderly and disabled people. On the one hand, smart homes are augmented environments with embedded computers, information appliances and multi-modal sensors allowing people to perform tasks efficiently by offering unprecedented levels of access to information and assistance from computer. On the other hand, health telematics makes the most of networks and telecommunications to propose health services, expertise and information at distance.

Book excerpt: How lessons from kindergarten can help everyone develop the creative thinking skills needed to thrive in today's society. In kindergartens these days, children spend more time with math worksheets and phonics flashcards than building blocks and finger paint. Kindergarten is becoming more like the rest of school. In Lifelong Kindergarten, learning expert Mitchel Resnick argues for exactly the opposite: the rest of school (even the rest of life) should be more like kindergarten. To thrive in today's fast-changing world, people of all ages must learn to think and act creatively—and the best way to do that is by focusing more on imagining, creating, playing, sharing, and reflecting, just as children do in traditional kindergartens. Drawing on experiences from more than thirty years at MIT's Media Lab, Resnick discusses new technologies and strategies for engaging young people in creative learning experiences. He tells stories of how children are programming their own games, stories, and inventions (for example, a diary security system, created by a twelve-year-old girl), and collaborating through remixing, crowdsourcing, and large-scale group projects (such as a Halloween-themed game called Night at Dreary Castle, produced by more than twenty kids scattered around the world). By providing young people with opportunities to work on projects, based on their passions, in collaboration with peers, in a playful spirit, we can help them prepare for a world where creative thinking is more important than ever before.
