Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whenever the integrity of the skin is impaired, via trauma or surgical incision, wounds und wound healing are the natural consequences. Thus, every physician should be interested in the biological processes involved in wound healing. The physician does not usually interfere with these natural processes, knowing that the body heals itself (natura sanat). It is not until the natural wound healing process is disturbed, that we realize how little we know about this area. Our limited knowledge is not even available to most physicians. Advances in the areas of cell-and molecular biology have also resulted in substantial progress in the field of wound healing. Today, we know that the process of tissue repair occurs in three phases and is controlled by specific cells. These cells release potent mediators which in turn regulate the function of other cells surrounding the area. "Certain rules apply to the healing of wounds and injured tissue. You must follow nature for nature will never follow you", this sentence writen by Paracelsus in his book "Chirurgia magna" is still valid today. Current reseach in wound healing is exploring these rules and integrating them into new therapeutical concepts. The purpose of this book is to make current knowledge on basic healing processes, research in this area and on wound management available to most physicians. Due to the importance of wound healing and the successful combination of basic science and clinical aspects, I would like this book to be widely accepted.

Book excerpt: This book outlines, from a surgeon’s standpoint, how physicians and mid-level providers working at wound care centres can expeditiously and effectively manage wounds. It comprehensively addresses the concept of wound healing, from the healing process to debridement concepts, and various antiseptics and local antibiotics used in dressing materials to facilitate healing. The book also discusses the latest inventions and treatment options that have revolutionized wound healing, such as: oxygen therapy, ozone therapy, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, electric therapy and ultrasonic wound therapy. In closing, it examines the latest regenerative therapies based on stem cell therapy, cellular therapy and gene therapy. Given its scope, the book offers a valuable resource for medical students and physicians dealing with wound management, as well as a reference guide for nurses in primary and tertiary wound care settings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasingly, wound management is recognised as a specialised area of practice. Advances in wound-care products, surgical interventions, and social-support options create an often bewildering array of knowledge for healthcare practitioners. This textbook opens with a focus on the core elements of effective wound management: an understanding of how wounds heal and what inhibits wound healing, rigorous assessment, use of outcome measures, evidence-based approaches to practice, and an understanding of how clinical research is done. Key aspects of wound-bed preparation and management - diagnostic investigations, assessment and management of non-viable tissue, infected wounds, dressings and technology, pharmacological therapy, and acute wounds – are then elucidated. Optimal management of commonly-encountered wounds (venous leg ulceration, arterial and mixed arterial-venous ulceration, inflammatory ulcers, pressure injury, and the high-risk foot) and unusual wounds is described. The path to professionalisation of wound management in Australia is charted. The book ends with a list of wound care products (types, properties, uses, distributor-contact details). The editors of and specialist contributors to this text have aimed to build on the foundations provided by the numerous basic, introductory-level textbooks in the field to provide an authoritative, comprehensive, and up-to-date textbook for wound managers who wish to further develop their knowledge and skills.
