Book excerpt: This plain explanation of heraldry is accompanied by many pleasing coloured plates, and seems to be specially adapted to students of Scottish heraldry in the same way that Boutell, Holme, Cussans, and Mr. G. W. Eve's works apply to the explanation of English armory particularly. It is, however, impossible to compare it to the latter beautiful work, or to "the Symbolisms of Heraldry" by our contributor, Mr. W. Cecil Wade, since the book under review attempts to deal with what is essentially poetic and romantic as a plain matter-of-fact subject, which it never was and never will be. His fellow-countryman, Sir Walter Scott, would have reminded the author that heraldry belongs to the day of the troubadour, the tournament, and the mediaeval pageant, when symbols had the utmost value and power over the minds of men. There is a tolerably large school of antiquaries which declines to see anything in the bearings of heraldry beyond mere lines or figures of objects arbitrarily adopted by their bearers, and which this matter-of-fact school states have no meaning at all as symbols, while it even denies the colour symbolism of the armorial coats and liveries of ancient days! In this school cannot be included many members of our Society. Let all the non-symbolists freely array themselves in amber, pink, or pale green or blue, which are non-symbolic colours besides being non-heraldic, but let all lovers of antiquity follow Sir Walter Scott's ideas of the devicefulness of ancient armory. What a splendid treatise on the whole subject he could have given us had he chosen to do so! --Journal of the Ex Libris Society, Volume 14

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heraldry in Relation to Scottish History and Art: Being the Rhind Lectures on Archaeology for 1898 The following Lectures were delivered in November 1898, and the interest then taken in them leads me to think that they will not be unacceptable in their present form to a larger circle of persons than could attend when they were originally given. Although in the first Lecture I have touched upon the technical terms used in the blazoning of arms, the volume is by no means intended to instruct its readers in the details of the science; there are only too many books written on the subject, to any of which reference can be made. What I have wished to point out, in as simple and direct a manner as possible, is, first, the interesting manner in which Heraldry is interwoven with, and illustrative of, Scottish history; and second, how it has entered into the artistic development of the country in a way which, perhaps, has not hitherto been fully recognised. I have also endeavoured to indicate how, when many of the. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This Charge is supposed to be derived from the chess, or chequered, board used by the Stewards in calculating their accounts. Book excerpt: "Scottish heraldry begins in the mid thirteenth century, when material of Scottish interest first appears in a number of English and Continental rolls-of-arms. This early evidence, pre-dating the appearance of the Armorial de Gelre in 1370, has barely been explored, and a major contribution of Bruce McAndrew's study of Scottish heraldry is its pioneering work on material from the period prior to Gelre. Building on this foundation, the author surveys the evidence from a wide range of sources dating from the thirteenth century to the seventeenth, when the early volumes of the official Lyon Register appeared." "Two hundred computer-generated chart pedigrees are accompanied by full-colour coats of arms, among them those of the Stewarts, Douglases, Murrays, Hamiltons, Gordons and MacDonalds."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Encyclopaedia of Heraldry, or General Armory of England, Scotland, and Ireland: Comprising a Registry of All Armorial Bearings From the Earliest to the Present Time, Including the Late Grants by the College of Arms Uillim, in prefacing his display of Heraldry, deplores that he has been forced to build solely on other men's foundations, and apprehends, that he may therefore be thought to have undertaken an idle task in writing of things formerly handled and published by persons of more sufficiency and greater judgment. This partakes much of the pride that apes humility, and the old Herald verily seems more courteous than candid. The Authors of the German. Almonv have built in like manner upon other men's foundations; but they have done so, that the structure they were about to raise might rest upon solidity and strength - that, being assured of the groundwork, they might advance with greater confidence to the battlement. The great works on Heraldry have long since passed out of print; and, able and useful as those works confessedly were, they have become so entirely obso lete, that they are of little value now, except to the Antiquary. Other works of a similar kind - similar almost to the letter - have occasionally followed and shared the same fate, with this material difference, that the old books are still regarded and referred to, while the more recent are, in a great measure, if not altogether, forgotten. All have been, though, voluminous and costly - voluminous designedly, for the subject did not require tomes of such magnitude - costly, because volumi nous. In the present instance, the cause being removed by the whole subject matter having been confined to one volume, the effect, costliness, has ceased, and an opportunity is thus afforded to almost everybody desirous of possessing it, of obtaining a work upon Heraldry and the science of Arms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Heraldic Book-Stamps: Figured and Described The large majority of the stamps illustrated herewith are' in the British Museum, but I have included a few in private ownership, and to these owners my sincere thanks are due for their kindness in allowing me to copy the various coats. I have in every case mentioned this private ownership, and where such mention is not found the book from which the drawing has been made is in the British Museum, either in the Department of Printed Books or in the Department of Manuscripts. Heraldry is of military origin, but its decorative side, and the various exact rules which govern it, were probably brought into use during the Middle Ages, in connection with the frequent Tournaments which were governed by strict rules. The ceremonies to be followed at the Tournaments were very closely laid down heralds as well as their assistants of all sorts came into much prominence, and personal insignia acquired an importance they have never had since. Even now there are a few signs of ancient personal heraldry existing in our army; crests and tartans of private families may be found among the Highland regiments, but the modern tendency, especially since the late war in South Africa, has been to abolish such peculiarities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manual of Heraldry: A Concise Description of the Several Terms Used and Containing a Dictionary of Every Designation in the Science The great revival which has taken place in the study and appreciation of the Science of Heraldry, and the wider and more intelligent interest now taken in armory, has induced the publisher to issue a new and revised edition of this work. This opportunity has been taken to enlarge and improve the Dictionary of Heraldic Terms, and to cut out much of the repetition which was contained in the opening chapters of the previous editions. The space thus gained has been used to give a larger and, in the light of modern research, more correct view of the Origin of Arms, and to add chapters on the Law and Right to Arms and on the Heraldic Executive. The chapter formerly given on Precedence has been entirely superseded by inserting the tables now in use in England and in Scotland, and the whole book has been so revised and rewritten as to form practically a new work. Though in the past the science has suffered much from the absurd and pedantic origins assigned not only to it but to the armorial achievements of various families, its use as an aid to historical research has been long proved and recognised. How often has the date of the foundation of some ancient castle or abbey been discovered or a portrait identified from the armorial bearings thereon, and many an important point in genealogy elucidated, by the charges borne by the individual members of the family explaining their matrimonial alliances, their position as cadets, or even the origin of the house itself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Heraldry, Historical and Popular Historical Heraldry occupies a position of such impor tance in Histories of England, that a certain amount of heraldic knowledge has become indispensable to the. Student of English History. Every Gothic Architect ought to be a thorough Herald. Heraldry alone can enable him to render his works, in the noblest and most perfect sense, historic monuments. Without Heraldry, no lover of the great Art, which has been so happily revived amongst us, is able either to feel the full power of what the Gothic has transmitted to him from the olden time, or to realise all that it is now able to accomplish as a living art.
