Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scottish Gypsies Under the Stewarts While taking as my model Mr Crofton's Tudor monograph, and stimulated still further by the profound historical re searches of M. Paul Bataillard, researches which have occupied that student of the Gypsies for half a century,1 I have, how ever, allowed myself a little more latitude than either of these writers, indulging occasionally in discursive remarks, inevitably suggested by some of the more important of the historical quotations. But it is to be understood that even these observations do not pretend to answer every question to which the facts cited give rise, or to offer anything like a final solution of the Gypsy problem. That problem, in the opinion of the present writer, has never been satisfactorily solved; and this study of the Scottish Gypsies cannot claim to do more than assist in the ultimate unravelling of this intricate question. In the year 1838, a society was formed in Scotland, under the patronage of the Scottish Church, for the reformation of the wandering portion of the body in that country, with some eminent men as a committee of management, among whom was a reverend gentleman of learning, piety, and worth, who said that he himself was a Gipsy, and whose fine swarthy features strongly marked the stock from which he was descended. There are others in that country of a like origin, ornaments to the same profession, and many in other respectable walks of life, of whom Iwill speak in my Disquisition on the Gipsies, at the end of the work. Book excerpt: Caesarian power was a crucial context in the Renaissance, as rulers in Europe, Russia and Turkey all sought to appropriate Caesarian imagery and authority, but it has been surprisingly little explored in scholarship. In this study Lisa Hopkins explores the way in which the stories of the Caesars, and of the Julio-Claudians in particular, can be used to figure the stories of English rulers on the Renaissance stage. Analyzing plays by Shakespeare and a number of other playwrights of the period, she demonstrates how early modern English dramatists, using Roman modes of literary representation as cover, commented on the issues of the day and critiqued contemporary monarchs.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exploits and Anecdotes of the Most Remarkable Gypsies in the Southern Counties of Scotland: Together With Traits of Their Origin, Character, and Manners The enemies' hands were made slaves; of these very slaves -1 were put to death. As on this occasion an uni versal panic took place, what could be more natural than that a great number of terrified inhabitants should endea vour to save themselves by flight? Dr Clarke, and various other writers, seem to be of the same Opinion in regard to the Indian origin of the gypsies while Salmon, the English geographer, and others, have endeavoured to prove, by satisfactory evidence, that the gypsies came from Egypt. As it would be almost endless to enter into details on this subject, 'which would merely end in uncertainty and doubt, we will pro ceed to mention, that from whatever part of the world the gypsies came, they made their first appearance in Europe about the beginning of the fifteenth century. They entered Bohe. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: In recent years, the assumption that traditional songs originated from a primarily oral tradition has been challenged by research into ’street literature’ - that is, the cheap printed broadsides and chapbooks that poured from the presses of jobbing printers from the late sixteenth century until the beginning of the twentieth. Not only are some traditional singers known to have learned songs from printed sources, but most of the songs were composed by professional writers and reached the populace in printed form. Street Ballads in Nineteenth-Century Britain, Ireland, and North America engages with the long-running debate over the origin of traditional songs by examining street literature’s interaction with, and influence on, oral traditions.
