Book Synopsis Managing Scotland's Environment by : Charles Warren
Download or read book Managing Scotland's Environment written by Charles Warren and published by EUP. This book was released on 2024-02-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Managing Scotland's EnvironmentThird Edition Completely revised and updated to reflect the current debates in Scotland's natural environmentScotland's natural environment is its most treasured asset but also the subject of vociferous debates. Written in the light of international thinking on environment management, this third edition tackles the hottest debates of recent years - deer management, the post-Brexit future of farming, land reform, rewilding versus repeopling, windfarms and conflicts between game sport and conservation. Underlying all the practical and policy choices are intriguing ethical and philosophical considerations which the book addresses head on, including debates about the goals of conservation in a pervasively humanised world. This is an ideal text for those studying Scotland's environment at an undergraduate and graduate level, as well as for those already involved in - or interested in - managing land and nature in Scotland. Throughout, it is well illustrated with photographs and specially prepared maps and diagrams. The book addresses such questions as:? Why have Scotland's landscapes and wildlife been the focus of such persistent disagreement?? Why is it so difficult to reconcile the competing demands of society and nature?? Is it possible to meet our needs for food and energy while also satisfying our desire to protect and enhance the natural heritage?? To what extent can the management of the various land uses be effectively integrated?? Does the imperative of tackling climate change require a radically different approach to environmental management?Charles Warren is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Geography and Sustainable Development at the University of St Andrews.Jayne Glass is a Researcher in the Natural Resource and Sustainable Development group of the Department of Earth Sciences at Uppsala University in Sweden.

Book excerpt: Published in 1999, this volume provides the first thorough analysis of the elements of sustainable public policy in a devolved Scotland. Following the vote for a Scottish Parliament in the 1997 referendum, it explores the immediate and longer-term challenges likely to confront Scotland. The book brings together policy-thinkers and practitioners from academia, business, the voluntary sector and politics to ask: What are the key opportunities and constraints around sustainability? What practical difference will devolution make? What changes within and beyond government will be required to strengthen the roots of sustainable development? It includes the findings from a specially-commissioned opinion poll published in this volume for the first time. Offering a far-sighted analysis, the book poses a series of timely questions and offers policy recommendations for the next decade.

Book Synopsis Streamlining Farm Oversight by : Great Britain: National Audit Office
Download or read book Streamlining Farm Oversight written by Great Britain: National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2012-12-12 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department for Environment and Rural Affairs (Defra) has made some progress in following up the recommendations of the Farming Regulation Task Force, which called for a new approach to the culture of regulation. But farmers consider the rate of improvement continues to be slow. Eighty-four per cent of farmers surveyed believe oversight bodies should co-ordinate their activity more. The cost of complying with regulations is on average around a tenth of a farm's net profit. The NAO estimates that, during 2011-12, nine separate government bodies made at least 114,000 visits to English farms. More than half of these were to carry out disease surveillance and testing and 30 per cent to check for farmers' compliance, at a total cost of £47 million. The bodies inspecting farms often collect the same information separately and there is only limited sharing of intelligence which would help with the better targeting of resources. The current approach will not deliver the scale of change expected by the sector, and contrasts with the progress made in Scotland where oversight bodies have come together to identify redundant activity and cut one in six farm visits. Defra has not collected sufficient data to understand the scale, nature, and effectiveness of English farm oversight activity. It does not routinely collect or analyse data on the overall number and pattern of farm visits, or on levels of compliance across all regulatory regimes. Alternatives to physical inspections might be more widely adopted as a way of improving compliance.
