Book excerpt: Epigenetics is the most exciting field in biology today, developing our understanding of how and why we inherit certain traits, develop diseases and age, and evolve as a species. This non-fiction comic book introduces us to genetics, cell biology and the fascinating science of epigenetics, which is rapidly filling in the gaps in our knowledge, allowing us to make huge advances in medicine. We'll look at what identical twins can teach us about the epigenetic effects of our environment and experiences, why certain genes are 'switched on' or off at various stages of embryonic development, and how scientists have reversed the specialization of cells to clone frogs from a single gut cell. In Introducing Epigenetics, Cath Ennis and Oliver Pugh pull apart the double helix, examining how the epigenetic building blocks and messengers that interpret and edit our genes help to make us, well, us.

Book Synopsis The Christmas Oratorio by : Göran Tunström
Download or read book The Christmas Oratorio written by Göran Tunström and published by David R. Godine Publisher. This book was released on 1995 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Christmas Oratorio begins in the 1930s, when Solveig Nordensson (wife of Aron and mother of Sidner) is accidentally killed. The grieving family abandons its home and moves to another town, hoping to start afresh, but finds that its emotional burdens have emigrated with it. Aron, bereft by the loss of his wife, starts "seeing" her in capricious hallucinations, and tragically seeks her reincarnation in a love-starved woman half a world away. The introverted Sidner begins a quest for emotional maturity that leads him into odd friendships with a remarkably self-reliant street boy and a free-spirited older woman. And grandson Victor, heir to the tortured legacy left by Solveig's death, finds redemption for himself in a staging of Bach's Christmas Oratorio - a performance begun by Solveig half a century earlier and interrupted by her tragic death.
Book Synopsis Socrates, or on Human Knowledge by : Simone Luzzatto
Download or read book Socrates, or on Human Knowledge written by Simone Luzzatto and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-08-19 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Socrates, Or On Human Knowledge, published in Venice in 1651, is the only work written by a Jew that contains so far the promise of a genuinely sceptical investigation into the validity of human certainties. Simone Luzzatto masterly developed this book as a pièce of theatre where Socrates, as main actor, has the task to demonstrate the limits and weaknesses of the human capacity to acquire knowledge without being guided by revelation. He achieved this goal by offering an overview of the various and contradictory gnosiological opinions disseminated since ancient times: the divergence of views, to which he addressed the most attention, prevented him from giving a fixed definition of the nature of the cognitive process. This obliged him to come to the audacious conclusion of neither affirming nor denying anything concerning human knowledge, and finally of suspending his judgement altogether. This work unfortunately had little success in Luzzatto’s lifetime, and was subsequently almost forgotten. The absence of substantial evidence from his contemporaries and that of his epistolary have thus increased the difficulty of tracing not only its legacy in the history of philosophical though, but also of understanding the circumstances surrounding the writing of his Socrates. The present edition will be a preliminary study aiming to shed some light on the philosophical and historical value of this work’s translation, indeed it will provide a broader readership with the opportunity to access this immensely complicated work and also to grasp some aspects of the composite intellectual framework and admirable modernity of Venetian Jewish culture in the ghetto.

Book excerpt: The story of a small Italian town where fishing, biking, and rock 'n' roll make the news, until tragedy turns everything upside down. Muglione. Nothing grows in this Tuscan backwater except the wild imagination of Fiorenzo, a nineteen-year-old metalhead. He lives for his garage band, horror movies, and fishing in the murky irrigation ditches outside of town. But when his path crosses with Mirko, the teenage cycling phenomenon, and Tiziana, the smart but frustrated head of the local youth center turned refuge for the town's hard-drinking seniors, his world will never be the same. From the brink of despair they fight their way back through honesty, resilience, and laughter, their fates interweaving in a story that is at once achingly funny, bitter, and full of poetic fervor. Book excerpt: Remote Vision contains an English-Italian bilingual version of the most significant works in poetry and conceptual writing produced so far by Alessandro De Francesco. It is both a self-standing, coherent book and the most exhaustive collection of his poetry ever published in any language; containing a new version of the 2008 book Objects Displaced, the complete 2010 book Redefinition, the composite and still partially unpublished Cistern, the prose Foreign Body in Ascending Motion and the very recent work Inhabited Spaces. All the sections were rearranged for this publication by the author who decided that each section contain the complete English text followed by the complete Italian version, avoiding a face to face translation in order not to interrupt the flow of the reading. The whole book was beautifully translated by poets and Brown University alumni Belle Cushing and Dusty Neu, under the coordination of the acclaimed poet and Comparative Literature scholar Forrest Gander. This book condenses and proposes under a new light all the conceptual and emotional intensity of Alessandro De Francesco's poetry.
