Book excerpt: The studies included in this volume supplement the work already published by the author on the imperial cult in the Roman West, focussing on the monuments of two cities in Roman Spain, Augusta Emerita (now M da) and Tarraco (now Tarragona). The introduction gives the general background and context of the four following studies and argues in favour of proactive initiative from the centre.The core of the book is a study of the provincial forum at Augusta Emerita. It opens with a historiographic survey followed by discussion of the plaza (location, portico, "Arco de Trajano"), then surveys other structures and their general architectonic significance. Discussion of the hexastyle temple at the centre of the precinct considers its date of construction and the influence of the provincial governor, L. Fulcinius Trio, in copying the Aedes Concordiae at Rome. Two long sections assigned to analysis of inscriptions and the significance of the provincial centre of Lusitania complete the study.Discussion of the "Temple of Augustus" in Tarragona, in Chapter 3, begins with a historiography of the temple followed by an account of its discovery by ground-probing radar and electric resistivity tomography. After arguing that the temple was provincial ab initio - rather than first municipal then provincial - discussion moves to present opinion on the successive stages of the construction and design of the temple with a final chapter on the significance of the Temple of Hispania Citerior.Two final studies consider the numismatic evidence for an Ara Providentiae at Augusta Emerita, its counterpart in Rome, and the inferred presence of a templum minus at Augusta Emerita with its enigmatic portrayal of Agrippa at sacrifice fifty years after his death. Book excerpt: The word conservation, when used in the context of the preservation of built heritage, implies an intrinsically complex concept that evolved over time, since it has been influenced by the perception of history throughout time. This volume emphasises why an understanding of the cultural evolution of the conservation approach must be considered a prerequisite for architects and engineers if they are to cooperate in full harmony with historic-artistic culture for the preservation of global built heritage. In particular, the volume highlights how, during the second half of the last century, the preservation process also involved engineering – the science of making practical applications of knowledge – which, for a long time, made an uncritical use of techniques and materials and devised interventions on historical heritage that were heavily invasive. The volume also devotes special attention to the problems related to seismic risk, to which Italy, Greece and Portugal are particularly prone. Problems that emerge during the crisis and reconstruction phases are dealt with in detail, as is scheduled maintenance, as this latter approach always constitutes an improvement in the performance of the monument and is the most appropriate tool for the conservation of the built heritage. Finally, the volume collects examples of building restoration with case studies of many outstanding monuments. The work will appeal to professionals and academics in the broader fields of civil engineering (both geotechnical and structural engineering), architecture, art history, the history of architecture, restoration and cultural heritage management. Il progetto nasce da una serie di accordi bilaterali che dal 2015 l’Istituto di Studi sul Mediterraneo Antico e il Dipartimento Scienze Umane e Sociali, Patrimonio culturale del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche ha intrattenuto con il Ministero della Scienza, il Ministero della Cultura del Montenegro e l’Historical Institute dell’Università del Montenegro. Oggetto della ricerca è la città romana di Doclea e il suo territorio: fondata come municipio romano nel I sec. d.C. in una pianura circondata da colline e delimitata da tre corsi d’acqua, si trova a circa tre chilometri dall’attuale capitale del paese, Podgorica. Scavata soprattutto alla fine del XIX secolo e solo in parte nel corso del XX secolo, fu la seconda città importante per dimensioni della Dalmazia romana. Ancora oggi sono visibili un grande foro, terme, templi e case private, tre chiese di epoca medievale oltre a un imponente circuito murario. Alcuni discutibili interventi moderni, quali la costruzione di una ferrovia che negli anni ’40 ha tagliato a metà il sito archeologico e la mancanza di una vera politica di conservazione e valorizzazione, stanno mettendo a rischio l’integrità e la capacità di fruizione del sito, che rappresenta uno dei monumenti più importanti per l’identità culturale della nazione montenegrina. Dalle ricerche di archivio e bibliografiche alla ricognizione archeologica, fino all’applicazione di nuove tecnologie di indagine, il testo è il risultato di un dialogo interdisciplinare che ha lo scopo di conoscere e valorizzare il sito e il suo paesaggio. Dal 2018 l’ArcheoLab Italia Montenegro è divenuto Progetto di Grande Rilevanza del Ministero degli Affari Esteri e della Cooperazione Internazionale con il titolo “Il Futuro del Passato: studio e valorizzazione dell’antica Doclea, Montenegro” (2018-2020).
