Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Century of Scientific Thought Other Essays Let us turn our attention to the Argument from Design, commonly so-called. My intention is to consider its position at the beginning of the last century, and the effect upon it of the great con troversies of the middle of that century which men think of as the Darwinian controversy. Finally, I desire to consider how that argument stands to day, after the storm and fury of that controversy has abated. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Relativity and Its Influence on Scientific Thought IN the days before Copernicus the earth was, so it seemed, an immovable foundation on which the whole structure of the heavens was reared. Man, favourably situated at the hub of the universe, might well expect that to him the scheme of nature would unfold itself in its simplest aspect. But the behaviour of the heavenly bodies was not at all simple; and the planets literally looped the loop in fantastic curves called epicycles. The cosmogonist had to fill the skies with spheres revolving upon spheres to bear the planets in their appointed orbits and wheels were added to wheels until the music of the spheres seemed wellnigh drowned in a discord of whirling machinery. Then came one of the great revolutions of scientific thought, which swept aside the Ptolemaic system of spheres and epicycles, and revealed the simple plan of the solar system which has endured to this day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Thought, Vol. 2 In order to answer this question perfectly, we ought, if possible, to analyze the dictionary of a whole family of languages, the Semitic or Aryan, and show that the original meanings of their roots are really such as we have postulated. Hebrew has been reduced to about 500 roots,1 but it would be desir able that some professed Semitic scholar should under take to collect the roots for the whole Semitic family in its widest sense. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Organisation of Thought: Educational and Scientific When I had the honour of being made President of the Mathematical Association, I did not foresee the unusual responsibility which it entailed. It was my intention to take as the theme of a presidential address the consideration of some aspect of those special subjects to which my own researches have principally been directed. Events have forced me to abandon that intention. It is useless to discuss abstract questions in the midst of dominant practical preoccupation. We cannot disregard the present crisis in European civilisation. It affects every function of life. In the harder struggle for existence which lies before the nation, all departments of national effort will be reviewed for judgment. The mere necessity for economy in resources will provoke this reformation. We are concerned with education. This book was released on 2017-07-18 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Science of Thought Knowing how little interest the present age takes in philosophy, I have compressed this book-into, the smallest possible compass. What might well have been expanded into a volume, I have condensed into a chapter, and often into a page. I Shall probably be accused, upon this very account, of a slight and pre sumptuous treatment of great themes. It is right, therefore, for me to add in self defense that I have Spent a quarter of a century in the discovery and demonstration of what is here presented in less than ahundred pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Thought: A System IN the successive imprints of this book that have appeared since it was first published in 1869, no changes have been made except the correction of typographical and similar errors. In the present edition several alterations have been made, both in the way of addition and omission. SO far as the form is concerned, the book is still in some respects difierent, perhaps for the better, from what it would be if it were a work freshly prepared by the author. The fundamental principles which it represents ap pear to me, however, no less true, and more impor tant, than they did when it was first written. I still think that Hegel's analysis of logical forms is the only one which represents their true nature; while the philosophy, if it may be so called, which, in the book, underlies the treatment of the processes of thought, has furnished the lines which my own more serious work has ever since followed. Download or read book Science and Christian Thought (Classic Reprint) written by John Duns and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science and Christian Thought This work is an inquiry into the present relations of science to Christian thought. At no former period has the subject assumed aspects of deeper interest than now. The last twenty, and especially the last ten, years have been marked by great progress in the chief branches of natural science. A wide field has been surveyed, and a great number of facts have been brought to light, bearing, more or less closely, on revealed truth. Much new and fresh material has been accumulated, of great value to all who take pleasure in seeking out the works of the Lord, and who love to trace innature the goings of Him who is great in his Church, as a God of righteousness, grace, and love. An effort is here made to bring some of this material within the reach of all, and to render it popularly interesting. In doing so, the Author holds himself alone responsible for the accuracy of the statements made and the scientific facts re ferred to.
