Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scientific Lectures and Essays This little book, including the greater part of this Preface, has shaped itself out of lectures given to the young men of the city of Chester. But it does not deal, in its present form, with the geology of the neighbourhood of Chester only. I have tried so to recast it that any townsman, at least in the manufacturing districts of England and Scotland, may learn from it to judge, roughly perhaps, but on the whole accurately, of the rocks and soils of his own neighbourhood. He will find, it is true, in these pages, little or nothing about those "Old Red Sandstones," so interesting to a Scotchman; and he will have to bear in mind, if he belong to the coal districts of Scotland, that the "stones in the wall" there belong to much older rocks than those "New Red Sandstones" of which this book treats; and that the coal measures of Scotland, with the volcanic rocks which have disturbed them, are often very different in appearance to the English coal measures. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scientific Lectures IN these days of limited leisure, and continually increasing literary activity, when there is more and more that every intelligent man would wish to read, and apparently less and less time for'reading, an apology is required for the publication of a book, however small, which does not profess to contain anything absolutely new. At the same time, the very circum stances above referred to, render it desirable that the observations of specialists should be condensed and epitomized for the general reader, and hence the continually increasing demand for lectures; which freed not, because they are popular, be the less truly scientific. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular Lectures on Scientific Subjects The first and second Lectures have already appeared in print; the first in a university programme which, however, was not published. The second appeared in the 'kieler Monatsschrift' for May, 1853, but owing to the restricted circulation of that journal, became but little known; both have, accordingly, been reprinted. The third and fourth Lectures have not previously appeared. These Lectures, called forth as they have been by incidental occasions, have not, of course, been composed in accordance with a rigidly uniform plan. Each of them has been kept perfectly independent of the others. Hence some amount of repetition has been unavoidable, and the first four may perhaps seem somewhat confusedly thrown together. If I may claim that they have any leading thought, it would be that I have endeavoured to illustrate the essence and the import of Natural laws, and their relation to the mental activity of man. This seems to me the chief interest and the chief need in Lectures before a public whose education has been mainly literary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Harmony of Science and Revelation The following pages contain a course of lectures, on the harmony of science and revelation, delivered on week-evenings, during the course of last winter. These lectures were so favourably received, when delivered, as to induce me to hope that they might be more widely useful, if commit ted to the printed page. In extenuation of all detects I beg to state that they were written amid the pressure of pastoral engagements. And that they are published as they were delivered, with but a few trifling corree tions. It will also be remembered that, in presenting scientific truths to a general audience, the style and illustrations must be plain and popular, if we wish to engage attention; and all minute details, and lengthened references to authorities must be avoided. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Atomic Theory, Vol. 2: And Essays Scientific and Literary IT is the inalienable prerogative of man to pray to God. It is the royal condition on which he wears the crown of Nature; although the condition is ill fulfilled, and his glory is therefore dim. In every clime and in every age, however, he builds himself an altar. Nor is there any man, he his metaphysical creed what it may, or be he ever so far from God m the spirit of his mind, but sometimes utters himself in willing or involun tary prayers. Superstitions, holidays, pagodas, temples, mosques, images and pictures, churches and chapels, even amulets and charms, do all attest the fact that the distinguishing attitude of man is on his knees. Curses themselves are but inverted prayers; like the images of things within the eyeball, which the eye within the eye restores to their real position in the act of vision. The common sense, or public reason of humanity, nu. Doubtingly declares its conscious allegiance to Him who cannot be adequately named. Even if it is not possible to generalise a philosophy of man from the principles of common sense, as they are called, it is yet inconceivable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dore Lectures on Mental Science The more perfect, therefore, the working of the personal factor, the greater will be the results de veloped from the Universal Law; and hence our lines Of study should be two-fold - ou the one hand the theoretical study Of the action of Universal Law, and on the other the practical fitting of our selves to make use of it; and if the present volume should assist any reader in this two-fold quest, it will have answered its purpose. The different subjects have necessarily been treated very briefly, and the addresses can only be considered as suggestions for lines Of thought which the reader will be able to work out for himself, and he must therefore not expect that careful elabora tion Of detail which I would gladly have bestowed had I been writing on one of these subjects exclu sively. This little book must be taken only for what it is, the record of somewhat fragmentary talks with a very indulgent audience, to whom I grate fully dedicate the volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science Lectures for the People Mr. Chairman, my friends - (began the Professor) - Encouraged by the success of the experiment which was tried last spring with the endeavour of imparting to you some portion of know ledge Of science, and arousing some interest in scientific facts and reasonings, I have come again this autumn in the hope that we may have as successful a series of meetings as we had in the previous spring. I have been assisted most kindly by Dr. Alcock and Dr. Morgan who have volunteered courses on Natural History and on Physiology. These lectures will be giyea at a later period. Although it may be necessary in Manchester to speak Of the advantage of scientific reasoning, of the importance of scientific investigation, yet on the results of science it is almost needless for me to dwell. Let us only look at one of the real wonders of the world lately accomplished - tihe Atlantic Telegraph. How important for all of us, for every man and woman in England, to really understand Something about the principles by means Of which we are able to talk with our friends in New York! I might turn toa thousand other important applications of know ledge in the present day, in which you would find the same interest and the same necessity for a knowledge Of the principles Of science. And these principles are not so abstruse or so difficult but that they may be mastered by all who have the will to do it.
