Book Synopsis Mirror of Consciousness by : Anna J. Bonshek
Download or read book Mirror of Consciousness written by Anna J. Bonshek and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publishe. This book was released on 2001 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mirror of Consciousness ambitiously traverses a wide range of themes pertaining to art, creativity, knowledge and theory. Its unique perspective lies in its exposition of Vedic Science as brought to light by His Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and in the application of the principles of this science to preliminary analysis of the Vastusutra Upanishad. No other publication has examined art and theory with the same comprehensive vision. To do justice to the topic of universal value in art and theory, the author has delved into several areas that impact the visual arts--late twentieth-century debates in art theory, models of historiography, new definitions of culture and tradition--in the context of the individual`s own consciousness or simplest form of awareness. Though comprehensive and detailed, it will appeal to those who are curious about trends in the visual arts, the advent and impact of new technologies, and the development of collective consciousness in our time.

Book Synopsis Law and Religion by : Leslie C. Griffin
Download or read book Law and Religion written by Leslie C. Griffin and published by Aspen Publishing. This book was released on 2010-03-10 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed to be used either as a primary text or with any Law and Religion or First Amendment text, Law and Religion: Cases in Context presents descriptions and discussions of the landmark cases in law and religion and the First Amendment. Cases are selected from the leading religion and First Amendment casebooks, and the authors provide insights into the significance of each while revealing its context and, for many, details about what happened after the case was concluded. This unique text will intrigue students and engage their interest with: - Accessible prose and interesting illustrations; - Cases that involve issues that continue to confound the courts: creation science and evolution; public religious symbols like the cross and the crèche; private religious clothing like the yarmulke and the khimar; tax policy and religion; - Engaging characters, such as: Guy Ballard, who told customers that he was chosen by Saint Germain as a divine messenger and possessed supernatural healing powers that they could purchase; Officer and Doctor Simcha Goldman, who wore a yarmulke to the psychology clinic until an irritated military attorney complained to Goldman's superiors that the yarmulke was not permitted under Air Force regulations; Kimberlie Webb, a Philadelphia police officer who lost her efforts to wear a headscarf while in uniform and on duty; Ronald Rosenberger, who successfully challenged the University of Virginia's denial of funding to his evangelical publication, Wide Awake; - Insights from leading law and religion scholars of diverse professional, religious, geographical, and institutional backgrounds. In her role as editor, Leslie C. Griffin, who holds a Ph.D. in Religious Studies from Yale University as well as a J.D. from Stanford Law School, has brought together an impressive group of contributors to create Law and Religion: Cases in Context.
Book Synopsis Debating Yoga and Mindfulness in Public Schools by : Candy Gunther Brown
Download or read book Debating Yoga and Mindfulness in Public Schools written by Candy Gunther Brown and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2019-03-27 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yoga and mindfulness activities, with roots in Asian traditions such as Hinduism or Buddhism, have been brought into growing numbers of public schools since the 1970s. While they are commonly assumed to be secular educational tools, Candy Gunther Brown asks whether religion is truly left out of the equation in the context of public-school curricula. An expert witness in four legal challenges, Brown scrutinized unpublished trial records, informant interviews, and legal precedents, as well as insider documents, some revealing promoters of "Vedic victory" or "stealth Buddhism" for public-school children. The legal challenges are fruitful cases for Brown's analysis of the concepts of religious and secular. While notions of what makes something religious or secular are crucial to those who study religion, they have special significance in the realm of public and legal norms. They affect how people experience their lives, raise their children, and navigate educational systems. The question of religion in public education, Brown shows, is no longer a matter of jurisprudence focused largely on the establishment of a Protestant Bible or nonsectarian prayer. Instead, it now reflects an increasingly diverse American religious landscape. Reconceptualizing secularization as transparency and religious voluntarism, Brown argues for an opt-in model for public-school programs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Case Against TM in the Schools will convince intelligent and reasonable Americans of every political, ideological, and religious persuasion that course called the Science of Creative Intelligence and Transcendental Meditation, presently being taught in the American public school system, is a religion. Therefore, the further teaching of this subject should be stopped as a most flagrant violation of the establishment of Religion Clauses contained in the United States Constitution and in the constitutions of several states. If the teaching o the Science of Creative Intelligence and Transcendental Meditation is not soon eliminated from American public schools, the momentum of TM in the classroom will become unstoppable within a year. The Case again TM in the schools is a clarion call, appealing to American nationwide to rectify this constitutional transgression. -- Publisher (back cover)
