With development in science and technical education, it is possible to increase economic activities in the rural areas and thereby improve their economic status. At the secondary school level, we talk of science and technical education and technology takes over as the subjects branch into respective disciplines at the tertiary education level. The present and challenging situation in Nigeria is that of limited scope and scale, limited focus on the unique needs of young Nigerians, poor collaboration and cooperation across the sectors, outdated and theoretical training models and distance from the grassroots. Through appropriate technology, science and technology could be of great use in turning around the economy of the rural populace. This could be done through ICT, construction, energy, cooking, refrigerator, water treatment, sanitation among others. It is recommended that science and technical education in Nigeria should be directed towards addressing economic situation in rural areas and that they should be purposefully directed at empowering the youths with skills that will make them economically relevant and self reliant.

Book excerpt: Nobody is in doubt as to whether there is need to make the current quality of education being offered at secondary and tertiary levels in science and technology education in Nigeria more relevant, more entrepreneurial in nature and therefore more self sustaining. Desiring to achieve this in the near future, this paper examines how to possibly revitalize Nigeria economy through science and technology education in the 21st century with particular emphasis on the implications it holds for skills acquisition. Possibilities/opportunities of making the science and technology education subjects entrepreneurial in nature were examined and it was concluded that with renewed emphasis on skills acquisition there is hope of revitalizing Nigeria economy through science and technology education. With adequate weighting given to practical and workshop/studio practices, more time allotted to practical/workshop practices, those who offer science subjects allowed to go on Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) and promotion of science and technology education teachers tied to progress of learners in external examination in practical/workshop practices, the nation's economy could be revitalized as individual economy is being revitalized also. The paper however cautions that unless something drastic happens concerning poor knowledge of the subject matter and examination malpractice, every efforts made in this regard may be fruitless.

Book excerpt: Although the government, its agencies, and other key stakeholders are aware of the relevance of entrepreneurship in enhancing and sustaining national growth and development through more job creation, and the strengthening of the nation's industrial base, they have failed to give it the deserved attention at tertiary education level. This paper examines the significant role played by creative self-development through effective technical entrepreneurship education at the Nigerian tertiary education level towards tackling the deteriorating problem of unemployment among Nigerian graduates. Being a descriptive study, close-ended questionnaires based on 5-point Likert scale were distributed to a total of 300 respondents comprising undergraduates, lecturing staff, personnel managers, and entrepreneurs from Anambra and Lagos State, and the data generated was tested using the multiple regression techniques (a nonparametric statistical tool). The results showed that although creative selfdevelopment programs upheld by some prominent universities in Nigeria as part of their academic requirements for students, have really played a vital role in reducing the ever-increasing challenges of unemployment among their graduates, a lot of Nigerian graduates still remain unemployable because they have failed to translate their wealth of knowledge acquired into skills required by the labor market for their employment. Based on this fact, it is recommended that the government and all key players in the Nigerian tertiary education system should restructure and restrategize the entrepreneurship education programs of Nigerian universities.

Book excerpt: Technical education, as entrenched in the Nigerian National Policy on Education, is concerned with qualitative technological human resources development directed towards a national pool of skilled and self-reliant craftsmen, technicians and technologists in technical and vocational fields. The two key phrases, which readily come to mind in this type of education, are competency-based skill-acquisition and sound scientific knowledge. In order to cope with the requirements of fast developing economy, to gear up employment generation and meet the challenges of globalization, it was absolutely imperative to realign Technical and Vocational Education system in the country to cater for these requirements. This paper attempts to appraise the contributions of this often neglected but yet inevitable educational sector in order to make significant progress in terms of national development and job creation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Work is constantly reshaped by technological progress. New ways of production are adopted, markets expand, and societies evolve. But some changes provoke more attention than others, in part due to the vast uncertainty involved in making predictions about the future. The 2019 World Development Report will study how the nature of work is changing as a result of advances in technology today. Technological progress disrupts existing systems. A new social contract is needed to smooth the transition and guard against rising inequality. Significant investments in human capital throughout a person’s lifecycle are vital to this effort. If workers are to stay competitive against machines they need to train or retool existing skills. A social protection system that includes a minimum basic level of protection for workers and citizens can complement new forms of employment. Improved private sector policies to encourage startup activity and competition can help countries compete in the digital age. Governments also need to ensure that firms pay their fair share of taxes, in part to fund this new social contract. The 2019 World Development Report presents an analysis of these issues based upon the available evidence.

It studies how European economies mobilised for war, how existing economic institutions stood up under the strain, how economic development influenced outcomes and how wartime experience influenced post-war economic growth. Leading international experts provide the first systematic comparison of economies at war between 1914 and 1918 based on the best available data for Britain, Germany, France, Russia, the USA, Italy, Turkey, Austria-Hungary and the Netherlands. The editors' overview draws some stark lessons about the role of economic development, the importance of markets and the damage done by nationalism and protectionism. A companion volume to the acclaimed The Economics of World War II, this is a major contribution to our understanding of total war.

Book excerpt: In a world where advanced knowledge is widespread and low-cost labor is readily available, U.S. advantages in the marketplace and in science and technology have begun to erode. A comprehensive and coordinated federal effort is urgently needed to bolster U.S. competitiveness and pre-eminence in these areas. This congressionally requested report by a pre-eminent committee makes four recommendations along with 20 implementation actions that federal policy-makers should take to create high-quality jobs and focus new science and technology efforts on meeting the nation's needs, especially in the area of clean, affordable energy: 1) Increase America's talent pool by vastly improving K-12 mathematics and science education; 2) Sustain and strengthen the nation's commitment to long-term basic research; 3) Develop, recruit, and retain top students, scientists, and engineers from both the U.S. and abroad; and 4) Ensure that the United States is the premier place in the world for innovation. Some actions will involve changing existing laws, while others will require financial support that would come from reallocating existing budgets or increasing them. Rising Above the Gathering Storm will be of great interest to federal and state government agencies, educators and schools, public decision makers, research sponsors, regulatory analysts, and scholars.
