Diese Stimmen sind bis heute nicht verstummt. Zur Bundestagswahl am 22.September 2013 wurden von der NPD zahlreiche Plakate aufgehängt, die sog. Ausländern_innen kriminelle und überfremdende Eigenschaften zuschreiben. Ein klares Verneinen einer menschenverachtenden Ideologie reicht aber meist nicht aus – es müssen Taten folgen, wie bspw. die Abhängung der Opfer verhöhnenden Plakate der NPD in Thüringen. Um sich allgemein gegen Rassismus im Alltag oder auch auf politischer Ebene zu verwehren, genügt es nicht, hilflos „Zuflucht im allgemein Menschlichen“ (ebd.) zu suchen und auf die allgemeingültigen und durch nationalistisch denkende Menschen angegriffenen Menschenrechte zu verweisen. Die Universalität der Menschenrechte ist zwar die Grundlage in einer argumentativen Auseinandersetzung mit Rassismus, doch es braucht weit mehr als eine pure gedankliche oder theoretische Beschäftigung mit nationalbetonten und neofaschistischen Ideologien. Um eben solchen menschenverachtenden Weltbildern entgegen zu treten, ist eine klare Gegenpositionierung wichtig, aber auch eine umfangreich bedachte Handlungsstrategie. Allein die Feststellung, es handele sich hierbei um menschenverachtende Einstellungen, reicht nicht aus um derartige Ideologien im Kern zu entwerten. Es bedarf eines gelungenen Gegenbeispiels, das ein menschliches, tolerantes und freiheitliches gesellschaftliches Miteinander zeigt, sodass andere diskriminierende Verhaltensweisen aufgehoben und als unfair entlarvt werden. Die Aktualität von Diskriminierung und Ausgrenzung aufgrund von Herkunft, Aussehen, Geschlecht oder Religion bricht nicht ab. Die NPD mit provozierenden Plakaten empörte bereits Jahre zuvor bei Kommunal-, Landtags- und Bundestagswahlen. Auch eine öffentlich verfolgte Debatte um Thilo Sarrazin im Jahre 2010 zeigte, dass das Ausloten von Integration und Identität in Deutschland nicht ausklingt. Damit Demokratie gelernt, verstanden, verbessert und entwickelt wird, bedarf es einer derartigen Pädagogik in Schule und Alltag. Diese Demokratiepädagogik wird in der vorliegenden Arbeit in schulischen und außerschulischen Facetten dargestellt und als notwenig begründet. Book excerpt: This volume presents a state-of-the-science review of the most promising current European research -- and its historic roots of research -- on complex problem solving (CPS) in Europe. It is an attempt to close the knowledge gap among American scholars regarding the European approach to understanding CPS. Although most of the American researchers are well aware of the fact that CPS has been a very active research area in Europe for quite some time, they do not know any specifics about even the most important research. Part of the reason for this lack of knowledge is undoubtedly the fact that European researchers -- for the most part -- have been rather reluctant to publish their work in English-language journals. The book concentrates on European research because the basic approach European scholars have taken to studying CPS is very different from one taken by North American researchers. Traditionally, American scholars have been studying CPS in "natural" domains -- physics, reading, writing, and chess playing -- concentrating primarily on exploring novice-expert differences and the acquisition of a complex skill. European scholars, in contrast, have been primarily concerned with problem solving behavior in artificially generated, mostly computerized, complex systems. While the American approach has the advantage of high external validity, the European approach has the advantage of system variables that can be systematically manipulated to reveal the effects of system parameters on CPS behavior. The two approaches are thus best viewed as complementing each other. This volume contains contributions from four European countries -- Sweden, Switzerland, Great Britain, and Germany. As such, it accurately represents the bulk of empirical research on CPS which has been conducted in Europe. An international cooperation started two years ago with the goal of bringing the European research on complex problem solving to the awareness of American scholars. A direct result of that effort, the contributions to this book are both informative and comprehensive.

The concept of superdiversity has been adopted by scholars across the social sciences in order to address a variety of forms, modes, and outcomes of diversification. Central to this field is the relationship between social categorization and social organization, including stratification and inequality. Increasingly complex categories of social “difference” have significant impacts across scales, from entire societies to individual identities. While diversification is often met with simplifying stereotypes, threat narratives, and expressions of antagonism, superdiversity encourages a perspective on difference as comprising multiple social processes, flexible collective meanings, and overlapping personal and group identities. A superdiversity approach encourages the re-evaluation and recognition of social categories as multidimensional, unfixed, and porous as opposed to views based on hardened, one-dimensional thinking about groups. Diversification and increasing social complexity are bound to continue, if not intensify, in light of climate change. This will have profound impacts on the nature of global migration, social relations, and inequalities. Superdiversity presents a convincing case for recognizing new social formations created by changing migration patterns and calls for a re-thinking of public policy and social scientific approaches to social difference. This introduction to the multidisciplinary concept of superdiversity will be of considerable interest to students and researchers in a range of fields in the humanities and social sciences.
