This book was released on 2018-11-27 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While living with autism can be a challenge, it can also be a gift. For one young girl, a diagnosis of autism would mark the beginning of her and her mother’s journey of discovery. Jamila learns differently and sees the world in a unique perspective, and it would be this gift that would help her and her mother discover new ways of learning and teaching, seeing things in ways others might find unimaginable. In My Journey with Artjamila, author and mother Noorhashimah Noordin shares how she was able to break the standard mold of teaching and learn to adapt to her daughter’s unique way of learning. Using a humanistic form of pedagogy that is centered on the individual and focuses on the emotional and social development of children, Noorhashimah managed to connect and engage with her daughter, helping young Jamila concentrate on her strengths—and on her art. Jamila’s gift turned a challenge into a beautiful adventure and a fascinating experience. In her and her mother’s story, we can learn how important it is to see things from a different perspective, to embrace art as a form of therapy, to treasure memories, and importantly, to see the magical strength of will power.

Book Synopsis Civic Learning for Alienated, Disaffected and Disadvantaged Students by : Xiaoxue Kuang
Download or read book Civic Learning for Alienated, Disaffected and Disadvantaged Students written by Xiaoxue Kuang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-14 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In their journeys to engaged citizenship, civic education is a right for all students, helping them to become active and informed. However, for some students, there are barriers to engagement. It is these barriers that are dealt with in this book. Civic education is a key component of the school curriculum irrespective of country and political system. Ensuring that young people understand the political and social contexts of their country, and indeed their planet, is a key requirement in a rapidly changing and unpredictable world. Providing access to civic learning, therefore, is a priority for schools and the societies in which they are embedded. Yet, for some students, barriers exist which prevent a deep understanding of the requirements for full participation and engagement. These students are neglected not only in schools but in research as well. This book seeks to fill that gap by shining a light on the multiple disadvantages that many students suffer in seeking to exercise their rights as active and informed citizens. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Educational Psychology.
Book Synopsis Reading Achievement and Motivation in Boys and Girls by : Pelusa Orellana García
Download or read book Reading Achievement and Motivation in Boys and Girls written by Pelusa Orellana García and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-02 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume links theoretical and instructional approaches on how reading is motivated and assessed, and examines the interrelationship between reading motivation and achievement among boys and girls in culturally and geographically different settings. Much of the research on children’s reading has focused on cognitive processes; however, reading is an activity that also requires interest and motivation. These attitudes are generally defined as readers’ affect toward reading and their consequence is that children with more positive attitudes are more motivated to read. Taking into account the variability that exists within the notion of gender and age, this volume aims to examine and scrutinize previous research on the topic, as well as test theories on how the different dimensions of reading motivation vary with gender, in relation to cultural issues, motivational constructs, such as engagement and classroom climate, the role of emotions, interests and attitudes towards reading, among others. The book will be of interest to researchers, educators, graduate students, and other professionals working in the area of literacy, reading motivation, reading achievement and gender differences.

Book Synopsis Taiwan and The 'China Impact' by : Gunter Schubert
Download or read book Taiwan and The 'China Impact' written by Gunter Schubert and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-14 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There can be no doubt that China’s economic and political rise is having a stronger effect on Taiwan than on any other country, given the Chinese government’s claim to sovereignty over Taiwan, and Taiwan’s quest to maintain its democratic achievements and political identity as a sovereign state. Against this background, this volume deals with the ‘bigger picture’ of evolving relations across the Taiwan Strait, departing from the observation that China’s impact on Taiwan has become stronger over the last 20 years. This book analyses the ‘China impact’ on Taiwan in terms of its social, political and security space from both an empirical and conceptual point of view. It is the first comprehensive account of China’s multifaceted impact on the politics and society of contemporary Taiwan, written by renowned scholars from Taiwan, Europe and the U.S. The book covers a wide range of topics including Taiwan’s party alignment, elections, generational politics, cross-strait political economy, immigration policy and security. The contributors, political scientists and sociologists, highlight both the dangers and the opportunities of the ‘China impact’ for Taiwan and draw a realistic picture of the island republic’s current situation and future options in the shadow of its giant neighbour. Based on qualitative and quantitative data, this volume intends to fill a gap in the Taiwan studies field by studying the ‘China impact’ on Taiwan’s politics and society systematically and from a comparative perspective. By doing so, it will be of great interest to students and scholars of Taiwan studies, and East Asian politics and society more generally.
Book Synopsis Analyzing a Long Dream Series by : Michael Schredl
Download or read book Analyzing a Long Dream Series written by Michael Schredl and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-02-20 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyzing a Long Dream Series provides an extraordinary insight into the richness and variability of dreams, considering over 12,000 dreams that have been recorded for more than 30 years. Internationally recognized dream scientist Michael Schredl opens up his own personal dream series, offering a unique window into the interplay between waking life and dreaming. The book considers a huge range of dream topics, including family, friends, schoolmates, colleagues, erotic dreams, alongside the appearance of everyday objects. It also discusses rarer themes such as pain perception, temperature perception, and typical dreams about toilets, exams, and teeth. As the author is both the dreamer and the researcher, questions like why we dream about topics we have never experienced in waking life – for example, about the pain of being shot in the stomach – can be addressed, shedding light on the creative nature of dreams. The in-depth analyses provided in this book attempt to answer the field's most profound questions: why do we dream every night, and why do we dream in such creative ways about the issues that are important to us in waking life? The dreams analyzed question existing dream theories such as simulation theories, and the author proposes a function of recalled dreams for creative problem solving and provides ideas for future research. This fascinating book is an essential read for all dream researchers and students of the psychology of dreams.

Book Synopsis Catholic High Schools and Minority Students by : Andrew M. Greeley
Download or read book Catholic High Schools and Minority Students written by Andrew M. Greeley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The number of minority students, many of them not Catholic, who have enrolled in Catholic secondary schools is substantial. Since it is reasonable to assume that the cost of tuition in such schools is considerable for a minority family, the phenomenon suggests that parents in these families believe that their children will obtain a better education in Catholic secondary schools. The problem of measuring the effect of Catholic secondary schools on minority students is difficult because it is a complex and intricate task to separate family background and student motivation as influences on academic performance from the school's contribution. Here, Andrew M. Greeley makes the case that the burden of proof rests on those who contend that family and student motivation are more important than the character of the school. Using a complex analytic technique that includes sophisticated mathematical models, Greeley demonstrates that the preponderance of evidence tilts in favor of the school. There appears to be an authentic Catholic school effect, attributable to religious order ownership of some schools, more regular discipline in the schools, and especially to a higher quality of teaching in such schools. The effect of Catholic secondary schools on minority students does not occur among students from well-educated families who have been successful in their previous education experiences, but rather among students disadvantaged by race, the fact that their parents did not attend college, and by their own previous educational experiences. As these schools were originally established at the beginning of the twentieth century to socialize the children of the urban poor, their present success with today's urban poor may be due to the fact that these schools are simply doing what they have always done. In a preface written for this new, paperback edition of Catholic High Schools and Minority Students, Greeley confirms the continued success of Catholic schools based on
