Book Synopsis The Handbook of International Migration by : Charles Hirschman
Download or read book The Handbook of International Migration written by Charles Hirschman and published by Russell Sage Foundation. This book was released on 1999-11-04 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The historic rise in international migration over the past thirty years has brought a tide of new immigrants to the United States from Asia, South America, and other parts of the globe. Their arrival has reverberated throughout American society, prompting an outpouring of scholarship on the causes and consequences of the new migrations. The Handbook of International Migration gathers the best of this scholarship in one volume to present a comprehensive overview of the state of immigration research in this country, bringing coherence and fresh insight to this fast growing field. The contributors to The Handbook of International Migration—a virtual who's who of immigration scholars—draw upon the best social science theory and demographic research to examine the effects and implications of immigration in the United States. The dramatic shift in the national background of today's immigrants away from primarily European roots has led many researchers to rethink traditional theories of assimilation, and has called into question the usefulness of making historical comparisons between today's immigrants and those of previous generations. Part I of the Handbook examines current theories of international migration, including the forces that motivate people to migrate, often at great financial and personal cost. Part II focuses on how immigrants are changed after their arrival, addressing such issues as adaptation, assimilation, pluralism, and socioeconomic mobility. Finally, Part III looks at the social, economic, and political effects of the surge of new immigrants on American society. Here the Handbook explores how the complex politics of immigration have become intertwined with economic perceptions and realities, racial and ethnic divisions, and international relations. A landmark compendium of richly nuanced investigations, The Handbook of International Migration will be the major reference work on recent immigration to this country and will enhance the development of a truly interdisciplinary field of international migration studies.

Book Synopsis Describing Learning by : Australian Council for Educational Research
Download or read book Describing Learning written by Australian Council for Educational Research and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Major changes in the emphases of education programs in Australian schools have occurred since 1986. The states and territories collaborated to define the general content for a national curriculum in eight 'key learning areas'. At the same time, they developed a common framework for describing what students have learned in relation to that curriculum. This report presents a comprehensive picture of the key people, decisions, events, problems and successes as the states and territories embarked on making the new 'outcomes- based' approach a reality for teachers and students. The book contains: a detailed chapter from each state and territory education system; results from a 1996 national survey of principals and teachers; commentary and insights collected from teachers during school visits; and, evidence and examples of 'best practice' implementation strategies.

Book Synopsis Choosing Equality by : Joseph Viteritti
Download or read book Choosing Equality written by Joseph Viteritti and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America is now in the second generation of debate on school choice. The first was prompted by the provocative voucher proposal conceived by Milton Friedman in 1955 and brought into the mainstream by Chubb and Moe's seminal book Politics, Markets, and American Schools (Brookings, 1990). It introduced a pure market model in which schools would be publicly financed but privately operated. While opponents continue to contend that choice will lead to the demise of public education, the weakening of civil society, and the fostering of separate and unequal systems of education, Joseph P. Viteritti argues that these long-held assertions must give way to present realities. The rich and diverse experience we have had with magnet schools, controlled choice, inter-district choice, charter schools, privately funded vouchers, and public vouchers in Milwaukee and Cleveland provides a solid basis for crafting a choice policy that enhances the educational opportunities of children whose needs are not being met by the present system of public education. Drawing on his background as a political scientist, legal scholar, and education practitioner, Viteritti starts his book with the promise articulated in the landmark Brown decision of 1954. After reviewing a variety of policy initiatives enacted to promote educational opportunity, he finds that the nation has fallen short of providing decent schooling for its most disadvantaged children, and in so doing has delayed the movement toward social and political equality. Viteritti does not contend that choice in the form of charter schools or vouchers for the poor is a solution to racial inequality, but he believes that these forms of choice can move the country in the proper direction. He insists that the nation cannot pretend to have a serious commitment to the goal of educational equality as long as choice is available only to those with the private means to afford it.

Book Synopsis Digest of Education Statistics, 1997 by : Thomas D. Snyder
Download or read book Digest of Education Statistics, 1997 written by Thomas D. Snyder and published by U.S. Government Printing Office. This book was released on 1997 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1997 edition of the "Digest of Education Statistics" is the 32nd in a series of publications initiated in 1962. Its primary purpose is to provide a compilation of statistical information covering the broad field of American education from kindergarten through graduate school. The digest includes data from many government and private sources, and draws especially on the results of surveys and activities carried out by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). The publication contains information on a variety of topics, including the number of schools and colleges, teachers, enrollments, graduates, educational attainment, finances, federal funds for education, employment and income of graduates, libraries, and international education. Supplemental information is provided on population trends, attitudes on education comparisons, education characteristics of the labor force, government finances, and economic trends. The digest is divided into seven chapters: "All Levels of Education,""Elementary and Secondary Education,""Postsecondary Education,""Federal Programs for Education and Related Activities,""Outcomes of Education,""International Comparisons of Education," and "Learning Resources and Technology." The introduction includes a brief overview of current trends in American education. The data show that in the fall of 1997, about 75 million people were involved, directly or indirectly, in providing or receiving formal education. Assessment data indicate that there have been improvements in mathematics and science performance between 1986 and 1996. A higher proportion of high school graduates are going on to college. Yet, wide variations in student proficiency from state to state and mediocre mathematics scores of American students in international assessments pose challenges. The appendix contains a guide to tabular presentation, a guide to sources, definitions, 12 tables, and an index. Thirty-three figures and 422 tables comprise the bulk of the document. (AA)
