Book excerpt: "This book is written particularly for use in teacher-training institutions which offer a course in conducting for majors in Music Education and also, for individual use by beginning conductors in the field. It is designed to serve as a study guide rather than as a self-sufficient, exhaustive treatise. The book is aimed specifically at the problems most frequently encountered by the conductor of high school choral and instrumental organizations but the fundamental procedures are applicable to all levels of instruction." -- (page i, preface).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the three forces competing for political authority in France during World War II, music became the site of a cultural battle that reflected the war itself. German occupying authorities promoted German music at the expense of French, while the Vichy administration pursued projects of national renewal through culture. Meanwhile, Resistance networks gradually formed to combat German propaganda while eyeing Vichy’s efforts with suspicion. In The Musical Legacy of Wartime France, Leslie A. Sprout explores how each of these forces influenced the composition, performance, and reception of five well-known works: the secret Resistance songs of Francis Poulenc and those of Arthur Honegger; Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time, composed in a German prisoner of war camp; Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem, one of sixty-five pieces commissioned by Vichy between 1940 and 1944; and Igor Stravinsky’s Danses concertantes, which was met at its 1945 Paris premiere with protests that prefigured the aesthetic debates of the early Cold War. Sprout examines not only how these pieces were created and disseminated during and just after the war, but also how and why we still associate these pieces with the stories we tell—in textbooks, program notes, liner notes, historical monographs, and biographies—about music, France, and World War II.

The term "steel guitar" can refer to instruments with multiple tunings, 6 to 14 strings, and even multiple fretboards. To add even more confusion, the term "Hawaiian guitar" refers to an instrument played flat on the lap with a steel bar outside of Hawaii, but in Hawaii, it is the early term for the slack key guitar. Lorene Ruymar clears up the confusion in her new book that takes a look at Hawaiian music; the origin of the steel guitar and its spread throughout the world; Hawaiian playing styles, techniques and tunings; and more. Includes hundreds of photos, a foreword by Jerry Byrd, and a bibliography and suggested reading list.

This book was released on 2019-08-26 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cashmere, in the exact center of Washington State, has centuries of settler and Indian history. The Wenatchi called the area Nt'wt'c'kum, and it was later renamed Mission in honor of the work of Catholic priests Charles Marie Pandosy, Urban Grassi, and Stephen de Rougé. Mission then welcomed its first settler, Alexander Bartholomäus Brender; the future commander of the Civil War's Army of the Potomac, George McClellan; and the Great Northern Railway. In 1904, Judge James H. Chase led the town's rechristening as Cashmere. It grew from a frontier train stop into an established community with lush orchards and prominent enterprises like the Cashmere Valley Record, the Cashmere Valley Bank, and the Cashmere Museum. Today, its world-class goods and produce, like Aplets & Cotlets and Crunch Pak sliced apples, sit on store shelves internationally. Come explore this global community and still fiercely independent piece of the Pacific Northwest.
