Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook is designed to provide teachers and administrators at the district and school level with a set of procedures for gathering information about the major components of a computer education program and for using the information to develop conclusions and recommendations regarding the components of the program. The four major components of the computer education program are identified as: (1) goals and objectives; (2) staff development; (3) instructional materials; and (4) student achievement. The first of the handbook's three major units focuses on planning the evaluation, and offers background information on both the evaluation process and the components of a computer education program; it also describes the evaluator's task and provides guidelines for setting up the evaluation process. The second unit, gathering the information, provides step-by-step procedures for determining what information is needed, how it will be gathered, and how to use the tools provided to collected the needed data. The final unit provides assistance in summarizing the data collected and using it to develop recommendations, as well as guidelines for reporting the results to the school or the district. It is noted that the handbook's procedures and tools are specifically designed to assist practitioners in looking at the use of computers in the new content area called "computer education," which may include computer instruction integrated into the curriculum or a set of computer courses such as computer literacy, data processing, or computer applications. References are provided at the end of each of the handbook's nine sections, and a glossary is included. (EW)

Book excerpt: This handbook was written to enable elementary school educators to conduct formative evaluations of their computer integrated instruction (CII) programs in minimum time. CII is defined as the use of computer software, such as word processing, database, and graphics programs, to help students solve problems or work more productively. The first chapter provides an overview of computer education and program evaluation, and the second covers planning for evaluation. The third chapter explains how to collect the data to describe the existing CII program. Interpreting the data and answering evaluation questions are covered in the fourth chapter. Finally, the presentation of the evaluation report is discussed in chapter 5. Appendices include copies of questionnaires for seven facets of the integration program, i.e., planning, program description, goals, staff, plans, activity implementation and goal attainment, and strengths and weaknesses. Also appended are a summary of the research procedures and results upon which this handbook is based. The handbook is intended for use by both experienced and inexperienced evaluators to improve an existing CII program and no formal knowledge of program evaluation is required. (DB)

Book excerpt: Data Wise: A Step-by-Step Guide to Using Assessment Results to Improve Teaching and Learning presents a clear and carefully tested blueprint for school leaders. It shows how examining test scores and other classroom data can become a catalyst for important schoolwide conversations that will enhance schools’ abilities to capture teachers’ knowledge, foster collaboration, identify obstacles to change, and enhance school culture and climate. This revised and expanded edition captures the learning that has emerged in integrating the Data Wise process into school practice and brings the book up-to-date with recent developments in education and technology including: The shift to the Common Core State Standards. New material on the “ACE Habits of Mind”: practices that prioritize Action, Collaboration, and Evidence as part of transforming school culture. A new chapter on “How We Improve,” based on experiences implementing Data Wise and to address two common questions: “Where do I start?” and “How long will it take?” Other revisions take into account changes in the roles of school data teams and instructional leadership teams in guiding the inquiry process. The authors have also updated exhibits, examples, and terminology throughout and have added new protocols and resources.
