The study also is supported by Maslow's Theory (1954) in its emphasis on the importance of meeting the student's basic physiological needs of food, water and shelter before a student can progress towards self-actualization and achieve academic success. The findings of the research study indicated Arkansas school counselors were knowledgeable of McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act requirements. Findings highlighted the importance for school counselors to actively engage in partnership practices with community stakeholders to address the needs of homeless students as well as how participating in training to support addressing the needs of homeless students is vital.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore the influence of perceived student poverty and academic preparation on school counselor ratings of student disturbance and attractiveness. Student disturbance and attractiveness are key indicators of the quality of the counseling relationship and working alliance. One hundred and seventy-three professional school counselors were sampled using convenience methods from on-line newsletters and discussion boards sponsored by professional organizations. Participants were presented with a case scenario including two documents, a new student registration form and student transcript, that were used to manipulate the independent variables student poverty and academic achievement. Multivariate Analysis of Covariance (MANCOVA) was used to compare the mean differences of the dependent measure scores client disturbance and attractiveness while controlling for variance associated with gender and race/ethnicity. Results of this analysis found two main effects pertaining to the measure of the client attractiveness variable. First, school counselors were more likely to find students whom they perceived as poor attractive as clients. Second, school counselors were less likely to find students attractive as clients whom they perceived as less prepared academically. There has been little empirical study of the school counseling relationship and factors that contribute to a strong working alliance. This study suggests that counselor perceptions of status variables may impact their attraction to working with students. Limitations of this study and implications for practice and future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to survey school counselors to determine their knowledge and perceived preparedness to implement wellness strategies in school counseling programs. Wellness plans are a requirement for thousands of public school districts in the United States. There are no established standards for the training of school counselors in the area of wellness. School counselors are in a unique position to positively impact students through the use of wellness programs and strategies. School counselors from a mid-south state (N = 156) completed an electronic survey to measure how they implement wellness strategies and their perceived preparedness in this area of counseling. Results indicate that there were no differences in total preparedness based on years of experience nor graduation from a CACREP accredited programs. As the number of hours practicing wellness strategies increased, the perceived preparedness of counselors also increased. There were no differences in how counselors rated themselves on preparedness based on neither CACREP program graduation nor years of experience. Less high school counselors perceived themselves as having a role in promoting wellness than other school counselors. This study presents implications for establishing consistent training and programs for school counselors in the area of wellness. This study also presents implications for the use of wellness programs, measuring results, and school counselor self-efficacy.

Book excerpt: According to the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) national model, over 80% of school counselors’ time should be spent providing direct and indirect student services, which represents a major shift in the roles and responsibilities of school counselors. Additionally, after the Santa Fe mass shootings, Texas school counselors are now required to provide these services to students experiencing trauma and/or crisis. However, little research has been found regarding school counselors’ perceptions of their ability to provide direct and indirect student services, including trauma and crisis-related counseling, as outlined by the ASCA. This study addressed this gap by collecting survey data from 335 school counselors currently employed in Texas related to their perceptions of their ability to provide these services. Overall, the results of this study suggest that the school counselors who participated are confident in their ability to provide both counseling and trauma-based counseling services to students. In addition, they felt that they were mostly able or able to implement those skills within the school. These findings are encouraging given their roles and responsibilities as outlined by the ASCA model (4th edition) and Texas model (5th edition). Though further study is needed to better understand these results, the results indicate that the current emphasis on trauma and crisis-related services in Texas is yielding positive results.

The predictor variables included: highest degree of education, age, student-to-counselor ratio, years of total experience in schools, years of counseling and/or administrative experience, gender, ethnicity, grade level of school, and school role. The research provided evidence that school counselors perceived their district to be ready in the areas of School Counselors' Skills, and School Counselors' Beliefs and Attitudes indicators. The areas where school counselors indicated they perceived their school district as minimally ready were Leadership, Community Support, and Guidance Curriculum. In the areas of Staffing/Time Use and District Resources, school counselors reported perceiving their school district as being not ready. School administrators perceived their district to be ready in the areas of Community Support, Leadership, Guidance Curriculum, School Counselors' Beliefs and Attitudes, and School Counselors' Skills indicators. The areas where school administrators indicated they perceived their school district as minimally ready were Staffing/Time Use and District Resources. There were no areas in which administrators reported perceiving their school district as being not ready. Based on school counselor perceptions, the "overall" readiness level of their district was minimally ready to implement the ASCA National Model. Based on school administrator perceptions, the "overall" readiness level of their district was ready to implement the ASCA National Model. The school counselor and administrator perceptions were significantly different across all 7 readiness factors of the ASCA National Model District Readiness Survey. The classification of school counselors and administrator was determined to account for 30.4% of the variance in the overall perception of district readiness level to implement the ASCA National Model.
