Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Buildings The purpose of this publication is to familiarize those interested, architects, schoolboards, instructors and students, of the requirements and the solution of such requirements, in the successful planning of school buildings. There is no claim to originality in any part of the work, there being at the present time many able authorities on school buildings in this country and in others, all of whom agree upon various theories and the practical application of such, to the extent that certain practice has been arrived at, the derivation of which may be readily retraced by any thinking individual familiar with the subject and having at his disposal all of the works upon the subject. Where statements are made herein, they are based upon the composite standards of practice as advocated by the various authorities. The book is namely a memoranda reference book, for those interested, and as such, contains information readily found in brief, eliminating miscellaneous detail. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Architecture: A General Treatise for the Use of Architects and Others IN this book a general view is given of typical examples of the schools in most of the countries in which public education is well developed. The writer has sought to keep within the province of the architect, and not to trespass upon that of the educator, or of the engineering, sanitary, or hygienic expert. His object has been to compile a compact handbook, useful for architects and others who are interested in the subject; hence, in most cases he has avoided detailed descriptions of buildings, as the plans and other illustrations would appear to furnish all further necessary data. In accord ance with this idea references in the index are made to some features of the plans which are not mentioned in the text. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Design for a City School Building The class room is the fundamental unit of the school-house design. In American practice it is distinguished on the one hand from the recitation room, which has only chairs or settees for the pupils and is used, as its name implies, only for reci tations (or sometimes also for lectures and dictation exercises), and on the other from the general study room, which is found more frequently in Europe than With us, and in which a number of class es, aggregating a hundred or two of pupils, spend the assigned hours of study between recitations. The normal American class room accommodates from 30 to 50 (or rarely up to 60) pupils as fixed desks. In some special or private schools the number in a class room is as low as 25; but economy of administration makes b it desirable that the number should not fall below 30 to 35, while efficiency demands that it should not greatly or often ex esed 40. Each pupil has a desk, and the total floor area should not be less than 18 square feet per pupil, with at least 216 cu bic feet as the minimum cubic volume per pupil. Twenty square feet and 260 feet, respectively, are better figures for all ex cept the lower grades attended by small children. A slightly oh long room, with the teacher's desk at one end, is the best shape. Thus for a 40-desk class room in an upper grade grammar school. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Architecture and Hygiene The school house is an infallible index of the educational status of the community in which it is located. It stands at once a monument and a history of the mistakes or successes, the ignorance or wisdom, the poverty or opulence, the par simony or generosity of the people who have erected and maintained it. From the forbidding shanty on the country cross roads in the backwoods to the palatial edifice in the most enlightened city, this building tells a story in letters so plain and so unmistakable that he who runs may read. The school house teaches not alone a lesson in architecture, but lessons in sanitation, in engineering, in aesthetics, and in pedagogics. The building from the school-room furnishings and devices for teaching to the finishing touches of the exterior, is a composite resultant of the work of teacher, superintendent, school director, engineer, and architect. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American School Building Standards The present work is offered to the public in the belief that there is still great need for the dissemination of reliable information regarding correct design and construction in public school buildings in this country, and that "every little helps." The author makes no claim of originality for most of the matter contained in the work, unless it be as regards arrangement and selection. He has drawn freely upon all the well known modern works upon the subjects treated, modifying conclusions as experience and the most recent authorities approve. The controlling motive has been to so condense and standardize the best present day practice as to produce a compact handbook for ready reference, eliminating both the historical and purely aesthetic phases of the subject, for the sake of utility. The author acknowledges help received from, and opinions influenced by, publications of The Boston Schoolhouse Commission, Mr. Edmund M. Wheelright, Prof. A. D. F. Hamlin of Columbia University, Mr. Warren R. Briggs, Mr. M. C. Huyett, Prof. Rolla C. Carpenter of Cornell University, Prof. S. H. Wood-bridge of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Mr. R.
