Book excerpt: Excerpt from Schiller's Dramas and Poems in England IN the following essay - for which a Certificate of Research has been granted by the University of Cambridge - I have attempted to give a short review of the various translations of Schiller's dramas and poems, to show how they were regarded at the time of their appearance, and, lastly, to give a brief account of their in uence on the master minds of the first half of the nineteenth century. For this purpose I. Have looked through all the translations which are to be found in Cambridge University Library and the British Museum; two or three I have not seen, as they have been lost or mislaid. I have gone through the most important monthlies from 17 92 - 3. Somewhat tedious task, but not without a good deal of interest. It will be remembered that, at the end of the eighteenth century, magazines of this kind were in a very rudi mentary state. The reviews were mostly written by mere hacks who had, as a rule, but little knowledge of the book which they proposed to criticise. To investigate the in uence of Schiller on nineteenth century style and thought in England is a task which. Schiller was not less efficiently Qualified by nature for an historian than for a dramatist. He was formed to excel in all departments of literature, and the admi rable lucidity of style and soundness and impartiality of judgment displayed in his historical writings will not easily be surpassed, and will always recommend them as popular expositions of the periods of which they treat. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Schillers Wallenstein: Wallensteins Tod In his drama the poet mitigated some of the harsher features he had given his hero in his History, though he makes no attempt at holding him up to our admiration. He places him before us as a man who reaped what he sowed, but his treason is attributed in part to the unscrupulous efforts of his enemies in Vienna, and to the unusually powerful temptation of his exceptional position at the head of an army that seemed to regard him, and not the Emperor, as its real master. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mary Stuart: A Tragedy in Five Acts From the German of Schiller The first performance of Mary Stuart in this country in English is said by C01. T. Allston Brown, whose dicta as to theatrical matters are bound to command respect, to have been given at the Walnut Street Theatre, in Philadelphia, during the season of 1865-66, by Jean Davenport Lander; but it has been found impossible to verify this statement. It has been found equally impossible to identify the Mary Stuart produced at the Tremont Theatre, Boston, on December 13, 1829, by Mrs. J. R. Duff, at a single performance for this lady's benefit, as a translation of Schiller's play, though the cast of characters, so far as it can be traced, makes this seem to be the fact. Mrs. Duff was the Mary Stuart of this performance, Mrs. G. Barrett the Elizabeth, Mr. Scott the Leicester, and Mr. W. H. Smith the Mortimer. This piece, what ever its source, does not seem to have been repeated by Mrs. Duff or any other, in Boston or elsewhere; but if, as seems probable, it was a translation of Schiller's play, Its unique production slenderly carries off the honors of priority. But whether or not Mrs. Lander played the part in 1865 in Philadelphia in some experimental version, and whatever the origin of Mrs. Duff's isolated performance, Mrs. Lander may fairly be credited with having created the part of Mary Stuart in the United States, since her first appearance in a version of the play prepared expressly for her use by herself and Mr. George Becks can he established definitely, and since her presentation of the character, thus initiated, had a national and not merely a local recognition and repute. This book was released on 2020-02-11 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extensive scope of this collection means that this documentary record of the reception of German literature in England is a valuable scholarly resource. One of the most important features of British literary and intellectual history over the past 250 years is the influence of German literature. From the second half of the 18th Century, through the first decades of the 19th, German books and ideas attracted, then gained the attention of a nation. Despite the acknowledged importance of the influence on writers such as Coleridge and Carlyle the subject, though often alluded to, was rarely studied. This collection provides a guidebook through the masses of periodical and allows the English side of the Anglo-German literary relationship to be explored in detail. In order to make the collection useful to scholars with a wide range of interest, it has been divided into three parts: Part 1 is a chronological presentation of commentary on German literature in general. It also contains collective reviews of multiple German authors, notices of important anthologies and reactions to influential works about Germany and its culture. Part 2 collects reviews of 18th Century individual German authors and Part 3 is devoted to the English reception of Goethe and Schiller. Parts 2 & 3 contain cross-references to the collective reviews of Part 1. Containing over 200 British serials and articles and reviews from all the major English literary periodicals, the collection also includes a broad sampling of opinion from the more general magazines, including some popular religious publications.
