Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illinois, Vol. 1 of 5: The Heart of the Nation I have devoted myself in composing this work principally to the political history of the state rather than its industrial, agricultural and mechanical development, which latter features are so well known as to dispense with recapitulation by figures. I have been more familiar with the political life of the state than with its industrial or educational life, and other writers have treated the industrial, educational and agricultural life of the state with much more thoroughness than I could. When I have stated facts and events I have tried to be ac curate and truthful. When I have expressed opinions they are my own. The publishers have placed no restrictions of any character upon my writings. I am indebted to them for their courteous and honorable dealings with me during the writing of this history and for the prompt and cordial approval of my work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illinois in the World War, Vol. 1: An Illustrated Record Prepared With the Cooperation and Under the Direction of the Leaders in the State's Military and Civilian Organizations Since warfare today represents the organized efforts of nations and states, rather than the efforts of individuals, illinois IN the world war is the history of the organizations - military and civilian - through which the people of the state made their contribution to the common cause. It would be impossible to place on record the service of every one of the hundreds of thousands of individuals who had some part in the state's war activities, but because Illinois was so thoroughly organized for war work, the story of the activities of all these individuals is told in the histories of the organizations with which they served. Book Synopsis History of the Illinois River Valley, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint) by : John Leonard Conger
Download or read book History of the Illinois River Valley, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint) written by John Leonard Conger and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Illinois River Valley, Vol. 1 Few regions of like size in our country exhibit more unique features than does the Valley of the Illinois. In glacial times it was the outlet to the Gulf of Mexico for the run-off from the great ice sheets covering Canada, the Great Lakes, and north central states. In this era it received many of its present day physical features. Before Lake Erie found its egress to Lake Ontario over the Niagara Falls, the waters of the Great Lakes ran down through the Illinois Valley to the Gulf. Moreover, in that far off glacial period, the upper Mississippi and Rock rivers joined near the site of the city of Dixon and thence flowed southward to meet the Illinois near the present location of Hennepin. These forces have given the valley rather the character of a sluggish lake than a typical river bed, of normal fall. From Peru to the Mississippi, the Illinois shows only one and one-half inch of fall per mile. Before the white man came, the valley's luxurious prairies abounded in all kinds of game and were a region much sought after by the Indian tribes. Here were fought some of the most momentous Indian wars. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
