Book Synopsis Scavengers of Beauty by : Philippe Sibaud
Download or read book Scavengers of Beauty written by Philippe Sibaud and published by John Hunt Publishing. This book was released on 2020-08-28 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why was the mission to the Moon named after the God of the Sun, and not after a Moon Goddess or God? In this unconventional work, Philippe Sibaud explores the symbolism behind the 1969 landing on the Moon. More than fifty years after this seminal event, and whilst the Moon is attracting renewed interest, the author offers a bold new interpretation of the iconic Apollo mission. Was the Apollo landing the ultimate triumph of solar consciousness over the ancient lunar ways, a concrete enactment of the god Apollo mythically slaying the mother dragon at Delphi, or can the whole venture be seen as the sacred union of Sun and Moon, birthing a new vision at a time of great need? By weaving his own personal story with a greater cultural and symbolic narrative, Philippe Sibaud invites us to reflect on the importance of myths and the power of the Imagination to unlock the deeper meaning of our individual and collective experiences. You will never look at the Moon with the same eyes again.

Book Synopsis The Scavengers' Manifesto by : Anneli Rufus
Download or read book The Scavengers' Manifesto written by Anneli Rufus and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2009-03-19 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Destined to become the bible for a bold new subculture of eco-minded people who are creating a lifestyle out of recycling, reusing, and repurposing rather than buying new. An exciting new movement is afoot that brings together environmentalists, anticonsumerists, do-it-yourselfers, bargain-hunters, and treasure-seekers of all stripes. You can see it in the enormous popularity of many websites: millions of Americans are breaking free from the want-get-discard cycle by which we are currently producing approximately 245 million tons of waste every day (that's 4.5 pounds per person, per day!). In The Scavengers' Manifesto, Anneli Rufus and Kristan Lawson invite readers to discover one of the most gratifying (and inexpensive) ways there is to go green. Whether it's refurbishing a discarded wooden door into a dining-room table; finding a bicycle on freecycle.org; or giving a neighbor who just had a baby that cute never-used teddy bear your child didn't bond with, in this book Rufus and Lawson chart the history of scavenging and the world-changing environmental and spiritual implications of "Scavenomics," and offer readers a framework for adopting scavenging as a philosophy and a way of life.

Book excerpt: We will all live decades longer than our grandparents and parents and will have better health in our later years. With this enhanced longevity, we all want to look as young as we feel. Especially because we are inundated with images of youthful beauty on television, in films, and in glossy fashion magazines, we feel social pressure to improve our appearance. Aspiring to maintain "eternal youth" and to look good is not new and is not just superficial "vanity." Our human nature dictates that we take care of ourselves and enhance our appearance. Throughout history, women from Cleopatra to Marie Antoinette to today's movie stars have used cosmetics and nutrients to beautify and rejuvenate. Indeed recent psychological studies have proven that the better we look, the better we feel, and the healthier, happier, and more productive we become.

What exactly is the menopause? Review It's a good sign when you pick up a book intending to read one chapter and end up reading three. It's very moreish. This is because it's made up of short, self-contained articles, originally published on a website. Often an edited collection of articles by different authors suggests a boring read, but here the articles are good pieces of journalism with plenty to interest the reader. The topics are all vaguely human body related, but thankfully not all medical (not my favourite subject) - so, for example, as well as stories of a person cured of Lyme disease by bee stings or a piece on miscarriages we get topics like the effects on the body of being struck by lightning or falling from a high place. Even some more explicitly health-related matters, such as the impact of losing your sense of smell, were engaging enough to get me past my medical squeamishness. — Brian Clegg, science writer
