Book excerpt: A Sunday Times Business Book of the Year. Scary Smart will teach you how to navigate the scary and inevitable intrusion of Artificial Intelligence, with an accessible blueprint for creating a harmonious future alongside AI. From Mo Gawdat, the former Chief Business Officer at Google [X] and bestselling author of Solve for Happy. Technology is putting our humanity at risk to an unprecedented degree. This book is not for engineers who write the code or the policy makers who claim they can regulate it. This is a book for you. Because, believe it or not, you are the only one that can fix it. - Mo Gawdat Artificial intelligence is smarter than humans. It can process information at lightning speed and remain focused on specific tasks without distraction. AI can see into the future, predict outcomes and even use sensors to see around physical and virtual corners. So why does AI frequently get it so wrong and cause harm? The answer is us: the human beings who write the code and teach AI to mimic our behaviour. Scary Smart explains how to fix the current trajectory now, to make sure that the AI of the future can preserve our species. This book offers a blueprint, pointing the way to what we can do to safeguard ourselves, those we love, and the planet itself. 'No one ever regrets reading anything Mo Gawdat has written.' - Emma Gannon, author of The Multi-Hyphen Method and host of the podcast Ctrl Alt Delete

Book excerpt: A bestselling classic mystery about a baby-sitter who is kidnapped along with the three kids she is watching from three-time Edgar Award–winning author Willo Davis Roberts. “A solid adventure with more than a few spine-tingling moments” (Booklist). From the moment she set eyes on the three Foster kids, Darcy knew being their baby-sitter would be no picnic. But the pay was twice her usual rate, and the job was only for a few hours a day—surely an experienced baby-sitter like her could handle it. But Darcy hadn’t counted on the mysterious things that started happening at the Fosters’ home after she took the job. She did everything a good baby-sitter was supposed to do: she didn’t let the stranger claiming to be from the gas company into the house and she called the police when the burglar alarm went off in the middle of the afternoon. But that wasn’t enough to prevent a baby-sitter’s worst nightmare from coming true. Now it’s up to Darcy to rescue the Foster kids—and herself—from three ruthless kidnappers.

Book excerpt: Scary View is a story that reflects a strange and diabolical view of the world. The story starts with a corpsman who is in the beginning of the Gulf War. He is assigned with a marine recon unit and finds courage in the middle of battle. His wife and children go back home to Greenville, California. His eyes were opened to evil during battle and see his town engulfed with evil. He leads a revival with the local churches that backfire. The town and his family enter into a world of hell he never would have anticipated. His family is torn apart, and so is the town. In the center of the town is the local hospital. Its called the Sacred View of the Virgin Mary, but the locals call it scary view. With a history of death and secrets, it holds up to its name. It is a hospital with sterile white walls with paint peeling and of staph infections. The staff has little regards for human life but puts a large amount on the monetary gains from the dead and living. The town also has its secrets and mysteries of deaths. The remainder of the book tells stories of the hospital and the town, and at the end, is an ominous warning. Its a scary view of the world in which we now live in. We know things are true because they are. My little brother is in a museum in Indiana. He used to watch the ball game with my grandfather.

Book excerpt: Babylonia Delilah Jones. P.I., or Baby as her friends call her, has gotten her first big break. Solving the case for the Head of the Lycan House would prove not only she belongs in The Undercity, but deserves a seat at the table with the other paranormal private investigators. But while she’s looking for a perp who obviously won’t hesitate to commit murder, her life is being threatened. That’s not enough to stop Baby though. Neither is interference from Zaid, the hot Vampire who keeps popping up at the most inopportune times. The Lycan Job turns out to be anything but a straightforward case. Baby is learning more about the workings of the Undercity than ever before, and what she’s finding out is pretty ugly. It’s making her question everything she thought and knew about the paranormal Houses, and what she’s missing by not being claimed by her father. But that may well be a question Baby won’t get a chance to ponder, because even tapping into every ability she possess might not be enough to help her survive the Lycan Job.

Book excerpt: Duane Radford and his friends from childhood reminisce about growing up in Crowsnest Pass, Alberta (lovingly called “the Pass”), when the area’s coal mines were active. Set on the edge of the Canadian Rockies, in southwestern Alberta, the Pass includes the small towns of Bellevue, Hillcrest, Frank, Blairmore, and Coleman—all along Highway 3. In the 1950s, the Pass was a hard place for people to make a living and most faced adversity, relying on their own resourcefulness to survive. The community itself was largely made up of immigrants from many different countries, some of whom were escaping their war-torn homelands. Despite the hardships of working in the mines, the Pass offered an idyllic lifestyle—one of outdoor adventures, clubs, social engagements, and excursions—built around a strong sense of community. Though several people have contributed stories to the book, it is largely narrated by Duane as he follows his family’s arrival to Bellevue after World War II, and his experiences living there until 1963, when his family moved to Calgary, Alberta. With not much written about the area, Coal Town Kids is the first substantive nonfiction account dealing with the Pass since 1952.

Book excerpt: The Cinema of the Precariat is the first book to lay out the incredible range of the precariat (the social class suffering from precarity) as well as a detailed report on the cinematic record of their work and lives. It discusses a thorough and definitive selection of more than 250 films and related visual media that take the measure of the precariat worldwide. For example, thousands of Haitians, including children, harvest sugar cane in the Dominican Republic (The Price of Sugar), while illegal Afghan refugees work in Iran (Delbaran). More familiar are the millions of Latino immigrants, legal or not, of all ages, that work in the United States (Food Chains). Each chapter focuses on a sub-class of the precariat or a contested zone of labor or the evolving political manifestation of the struggles of the unorganized and the dispossessed. Among the hundreds of bewildering film choices available nowadays this book offers the reader reliable guidance to the films bringing to life the economic, political, and social dilemmas faced by millions of the world's global workforce and their families.

Book excerpt: "This isn’t just a story about baseball. It’s about life and the beauty of knowing and accepting who you are.” —Jeff Passan, ESPN baseball columnist This fascinating book chronicles the unsung men of baseball who serve the job, the hardships they face, and their love for a game that would not always love them back―told partly through the experiences of an MLB veteran. In baseball there are superstars and stars and everyday players and then there are the rest. Within the rest are role players and specialists and journeymen and then there are the backup catchers. The Tao of the Backup Catcher is about them, the backup catchers, who exist near the bottom of the roster and the end of the bench and between the numbers in a sport–and a society–increasingly driven by cold, hard analytics. The Tao of the Backup Catcher is a story of grown men who once dreamed of stardom and generational wealth. Instead, they were handed a broom and a deeper understanding of who wins and why, who stands tall and who folds, and who will invest their own lives in catching bullpens and the back ends of doubleheaders. Backup catchers survive in part because every team needs one. They are necessary, once or twice a week. They prosper because the game, like the world around the game, still needs good souls, honest efforts, open eyes and ears, closed mouths, compassion for the sad parts, a laugh for the silly parts, and a heart that knows the difference. Backup catchers are sports’ big brothers, psychologists, priests, witch doctors, player coaches, father figures and drinking buddies, all wrapped in a suit of today’s polycarbonate armor and yesterday’s dirt. They come with a singular goal–to win baseball games. They play for the greater good. After that, they play for themselves. A reverie on loving the grind and the little things baseball can teach us, The Tao of the Backup Catcher profiles Erik Kratz, Josh Paul, AJ Ellis, Bobby Wilson, Drew Butera, Matt Treanor, and John Flaherty to name a few. “This isn’t just a story about baseball. It’s about life and the beauty of knowing and accepting who you are.” ―Jeff Passan
