The term low-dimensional systems, which is used in the title of this volume, refers to those systems which contain at least one dimension that is intermediate between those characteristic ofatoms/molecules and those ofthe bulk material. Depending on how many dimensions lay within this range, we generally speak of quantum wells, quantum wires, and quantum dots. As such an intermediate state, some properties of low-dimensional systems are very different to those of their molecular and bulk counterparts. These properties generally include optical, electronic, and magnetic properties, and all these are partially covered in this book. The main goal of the workshop was to discuss the actual state of the art in the broad area ofnanotechnology. The initial focus was on the innovative synthesis of nanomaterials and their properties such as: quantum size effects, superparamagnetism, or field emission. These topics lead us into the various field based interactions including plasmon- magnetic spin- and exciton coupling. The newer, more sophisticated methods for characterization of nanomaterials were discussed, as well as the methods for possible industrial applications. Book excerpt: Superconductivity is a remarkable quantum phenomenon in which a macroscopic number of electrons form a condensate of Cooper pairs that can be described by a single quantum wave function. According to the celebrated Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory of superconductivity, there is a minimum length scale (the coherence length) below which the condensate has a rigid quantum phase. The fate of superconductivity in a system with spatial dimensions smaller than [the coherence length] has been the subject of intense interest for decades and recent studies of superconductivity in ultra-thin epitaxial metal films have revealed some surprising behaviors in light of BCS theory. Notably, it was found that superconductivity remains robust in thin lead films with thicknesses orders of magnitude smaller than the coherence length (i.e. in the extreme two dimensional limit). Such studies raise the critical question: what happens to superconductivity as all dimensions are reduced toward the zero dimensional limit? By controlling the lateral size of ultra thin 2D islands, we systematically address this fundamental question with a detailed scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy study. We show that as the lateral dimension is reduced, the strength of the superconducting order parameter is also reduced, at first slowly for dimensions larger than the bulk coherence length, and then dramatically at a critical length scale of ~ 40nm. We find this length scale corresponds to the lateral decay length of the order parameter in an island containing regions of different heights and different superconducting strength. Overall, our results suggest that fluctuation corrections to the BCS theory are important in our samples and may need to be systematically addressed by theory.

The production and experimental control of novel structures with typical sizes in the sub-micrometer regime has now become possible. In parti- lar, semiconductors are widely used in order to con?ne the motion of electrons in two-dimensional heterostructures. The quantum Hall e?ect was one of the ?rst highlights of the new physics that is revealed by this con?nement. In a further step of the technological development in semiconductor-heterostructures, other arti?cial devices such as quasi one-dimensional ‘quantum wires’ and ‘quantum dots’ (arti?cial atoms) have also been produced. These structures again di?er very markedly from three- and two-dimensional systems, especially in relation to the transport of electrons and the interaction with light. Although the technol- ical advances and the experimental skills connected with these new structures are progressing extremely fast, our theoretical understanding of the physical e?ects (such as the quantum Hall e?ect) is still at a very rudimentary level. In low-dimensional structures, the interaction of electrons with one another and with other degrees of freedoms such as lattice vibrations or light gives rise to new phenomena that are very di?erent from those familiar in the bulk ma- rial. The theoretical formulation of the electronic transport properties of small devices may be considered well-established, provided interaction processes are neglected.

Book excerpt: Two dimensional electron systems (2DESs) at semiconductor interfaces are a useful medium for studying complex physics due to their very low disorder and relative simplicity. Many interesting effects, such as the quantum Hall effect, have been discovered through transport measurements in such systems. Unfortunately, the interfacial nature of 2DESs and the related surface energy barrier means that directly accessing them from the surface is difficult. This has limited our understanding of theoretically-predicted, spatially-organized effects such Wigner-crystal microemulsions and quantum Hall stripes, which have been probed only indirectly. In this dissertation, we develop a new type of local probe that circumvents the surface barrier by tunneling into a 2DES from a second 2DES grown nearby. The interlayer tunneling happens directly below a scanned metal tip outside the sample, behaving as a virtual tip in a system we call Virtual Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (VSTM). In the first half of the dissertation, we discuss a novel mechanism for tuning tunneling locally between two 2DESs. Its premise is that raising a quantum potential well next to an adjacent barrier is energetically similar to lowering the barrier relative to a fixed well. A lower barrier leads to the quantum well wave function extending into it and to increased tunneling into a second quantum well on the opposite side. We characterize this mechanism in a GaAs-AlGaAs heterostructure as a new type of transistor. In the second half of the dissertation, results from a working VSTM system are presented, with local interlayer tunneling revealing hidden features in the interfaces below the surface.

The scientific programme included more than forty lectures and seminars, two poster sessions and ten short talks. Several discussion sessions were organized for the evenings, one on New Materials, one on New Topics and one on the special problem of the Fermi and Luttinger liquids. The scientific activity was kept high from the beginning to the end of the Institute.

The pursuit of non-linear optical phenomena became increasingly popular in the early 1980's, as the attention turned from inorganic crystals to organic films and polymers. And in the last few years the term "moleculw' electronics" has gained ever-increasing acceptance, although it is used in several contexts. We now have organic superconductors with critical temperatures in excess of 10 K, conducting polymers that are soluble and processable, and used commercially; we have films of a few monolayers that have high in-plane electrical conductivity, and polymers that show great promise in photonics; we even have a few devices that function almost at the molecular level.

As they are only one layer or one atom thick, their physical and electronic properties are sensitive to their local environment, and may be manipulated by engineering variations within the materials. Incorporating these materials into electronic devices requires that their interactions are well understood so that they behave as predicted. For this reason, the study of defects, likely contaminants, and engineered structures is worthwhile. The scanning tunneling microscope is of particular use in such experiments as it can be used to characterize the atomic structure and locally measure the electronic properties of samples. Graphene islands were grown on Cu(111) in ultrahigh vacuum to study graphene/copper interactions with minimal surface adsorbates. Using in situ low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), both the physical and electronic structure were measured with atomic spatial resolution and compared with those of clean copper regions. These measurements indicate a decrease in the work function relative to clean Cu(111) and reduced coupling of surface electronic states to the bulk. Other measurements find that both the band edge and effective mass of Shockley surface state electrons are infuenced by the graphene layer. Similarly, single-layer germanene was grown on and measured on Cu(111). A competing alloy process which forms Cu2Ge restricts notable germanene coverage to a substrate temperature range between 40 degrees and 150 degrees Celsius. Atomic resolution imaging and tunneling spectroscopy are used to distinguish germanene and Cu2Ge regions, and probe the interaction of both with the Cu(111) substrate. Germanene was found to be weakly coupled to the Cu(111), maintaining an incommensurate 3.8 Angstrom lattice but lack any clear signatures of the Dirac point. In contrast, a 4.4 Angstrom lattice is observed on Cu2Ge that is commensurate with a v3 x v3 R30 reconstruction of Cu(111), and distinct unoccupied electronic states are observed well above the sample Fermi level.
