Book excerpt: I have used a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) to image simultaneously the atomic lattice and the charge density wave (CDW) superstructure in tantalum disulfide (1T-TaS2) over the temperature range of 370-77K. In the lowest temperature (commensurate) phase, present below 180K, the CDW is at an angle of 13.9° relative to the lattice and is uniformly commensurate. In the incommensurate phase, present above 353K, the CDW is aligned with the lattice. 1T-TaS2 exhibits two other phases; the triclinic (T) phase which is present between 223K and 283K upon warming the sample, and the nearly-commensurate (NC) phase which is present between 353K and 180K upon cooling the sample and between 283K and 353K upon warming the sample. In both of these phases, discommensurate models where the CDW is arranged in small commensurate domains have been proposed. In the NC phase the CDW is rotated between 10° and 12.5° relative to the atomic lattice. Such a rotated CDW would create an interference pattern with the underlying atomic lattice regardless of the existence of a true domain superstructure. Previous work on 1T-TaS2 has not adequately accounted for the possibility of this moire pattern. However, around each fundamental CDW peak in the Fourier transform of the real space STM images, several satellite spots are visible, which conclusively prove the existence of domains in the NC phase.

Book excerpt: Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images 1T-TaSe2 and 1TaS2 at room temperature reveal both atoms and charge- density waves (CDW's). In AFM the atoms and CDW's have comparable amplitudes. In contrast, in STM the CDW's have amplitudes up to an order of magnitude larger than the atoms. Both AFM and STM images show that the CDW structure of 1T-TaS2 is continuously incommensurate while 1T-TaSe2 is commensurate.

Book excerpt: The Scanning tunneling microscope (STM) has been used to study the effects of Fe doping on the charge-density wave (CDW) structure in NbSe3 and 1T-TaS2. In NbSe3 small amounts of Fe reduce both CDW gaps by 25--30% and change the relative CDW amplitudes of the high and low temperature CDWs. The CDW amplitudes remain strong on all three chains of the surface unit cell with no evident disorder. In 1T-Fe{sub 0.05}Ta{sub 0.95}S2 the Fe introduces substantial disorder in the CDW pattern, but the local CDW amplitude remains strong. The CDW energy gap is reduced by approximately 50% and the resistive anomaly at the commensurate-incommensurate transition is removed. The STM in both the image and spectroscopy modes can detect subtle changes in CDW structure due to impurities.

Book excerpt: Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has been used to study the atomic and electronic structures of quasi-one-dimensional charge-density wave (CDW) materials. The two materials chosen for this study, NbSe$sb3$ and o-TaS$sb3$, exhibit numerous interesting characteristics associated with the formation and motion of the CDW. The purpose of these studies is to determine if the surface characteristics are sufficiently similar to the bulk characteristics to learn something about the microscopics of CDWs and their dynamics. Room temperature studies of NbSe$sb3$ show that at least two different surface structures are possible. The first is a slightly relaxed form of the bulk crystal structure, while the second suggests the presence of an additional atom on the type-I chains. The detailed structure of o-TaS$sb3$ is not known, but STM studies show that it is more closely related to the ZrSe$sb3$ structure than that of NbSe$sb3$ and m-TaS$sb3$, as had previously been assumed. The difference in the strength of the chalcogen pairing in the chains of o-TaS$sb3$ is much less than that of m-TaS$sb3$, with all chains exhibiting intermediate strength pairing. Low temperature studies of the two surfaces of NbSe$sb3$ show that the relaxed surface forms a faint CDW, while the adatom surface does not. One-dimensional fluctuations above the CDW transition temperature in o-TaS$sb3$ can be seen in STM images. Below the transition, the CDW is imaged and agrees well with the known wavevector. There are two uniformly distributed CDW maxima per unit cell along the b$sb{rm o}$-axis which, in conjunction with the room temperature lattice images, explains some of the differences between the CDW characteristics of o-TaS$sb3$ and m-TaS$sb3$. All attempts to slide the CDW on the surfaces of these materials have been unsuccessful.

Book excerpt: This thesis reports on the use of scanning tunnelling microscopy to elucidate the atomic-scale electronic structure of a charge density wave, revealing that it has a d-symmetry form factor, hitherto unobserved in nature. It then details the development of an entirely new class of scanned probe: the scanning Josephson tunnelling microscope. This scans the Josephson junction formed between a cuprate superconducting microscope tip and the surface of a cuprate sample, thereby imaging the superfluid density of the sample with nanometer resolution. This novel method is used to establish the existence of a spatially modulated superconducting condensate, something postulated theoretically over half a century ago but never previously observed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to its nondestructive imaging power, scanning tunneling microscopy has found major applications in the fields of physics, chemistry, engineering, and materials science. This book provides a comprehensive treatment of scanning tunneling and atomic force microscopy, with full coverage of the imaging mechanism, instrumentation, and sample applications. The work is the first single-author reference on STM and presents much valuable information previously available only as proceedings or collections of review articles. It contains a 32-page section of remarkable STM images, and is organized as a self-contained work, with all mathematical derivations fully detailed. As a source of background material and current data, the book will be an invaluable resource for all scientists, engineers, and technicians using the imaging abilities of STM and AFM. It may also be used as a textbook in senior-year and graduate level STM courses, and as a supplementary text in surface science, solid-state physics, materials science, microscopy, and quantum mechanics.
