Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scale Insects of the Santa Cruz Peninsula, Vol. 1 It is probable that the scale-insect fauna of no area of comparable extent, unless it be that of the region surrounding the Mesilla Valley in New Mexico, is better known than is that of the Santa Cruz Peninsula in California. Nor is it probable that there are many areas of similar extent in which this group of insects is represented by a larger or more diversified list of species. Small as this peninsula is, more species are now known to occur out of doors within it than have been recorded in any of the various state lists that have been published (deducting synonyms), and it should be borne in mind that in all these lists there are included numerous species known only from their occurrence in greenhouses. This richness of the Coccid fauna of the Santa Cruz Peninsula is due in part to the fact that many introduced species which are found only in greenhouses throughout much of the United States are here able to thrive out of doors. Nevertheless, of the ninety-two species recorded in this paper sixty are presumably native. The extent of our knowledge of these species is due to the efforts of a long series of students who for twenty years or more have been adding to it. A total of forty-six species, of which seven are now regarded as synonyms, have their type locality within this area. The accompanying sketch map (Fig. 1) will give some idea of the size of this peninsula as compared with the entire state of California. For the purposes of this paper the Santa Cruz Peninsula is regarded as bounded on the south by a line drawn from Santa Cruz to San Jose and thence to the southern extremity of San Francisco Bay. The presentation of a local list is but a small part of the real purpose of this paper. In the case of many of the included species the existing descriptions are in need of amplification, and in the case of many more the available figures (if, indeed, there be any) are inadequate. The opportunity has therefore been taken especially to present figures of numerous species. There is also included a considerable amount of information having to do with locality and host records and synonymy, together with discussions of certain matters of more general interest. There are recorded in this list only species occurring out of doors. Were greenhouse species likewise to be considered, the list might be extended almost indefinitely. The types of all new species herein described are in the Stanford University collection of Coccidae. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Coccidae of California: A Descriptive List of the Different Scale Insects, Found in and Reported From California About sixteen years ago the State Board of Horticulture published a list of the Coccidse (scale insects) of California, giving some twenty-species found in the State. At that time comparatively little was known, by the residents of the State, about scale bugs or the amount of injury that could be caused by them; yet, to-day, there is no other single family of insects that is as important to the horticulturists of the world as are these minute creatures, and we can not know too much about them. As a group they are very unattractive to the average entomologist, and even more so to the average horticulturist, yet a knowledge of the species and the best known methods of combating their attacks is a very essential part of the education of every successful fruit-grower. Fruit-growing is a competitive business, and the successful grower must avail himself of every opportunity to gain knowledge that will be of assistance to him in his business; therefore, it has been deemed advisable to bring before his notice the following list of species occurring in California, with illustrations and short descriptions of the more important varieties, in order to enable the grower to recognize and distinguish between the destructive species and those that are not so destructive. Since the first list was published, and especially during the last few years, there has been a very active period among the growers, orchardists, nurserymen, and those having greenhouse interests, to gain a knowledge of scale insects. This activity has not been prompted by a love of the study of this particular branch of entomology, but purely as a business proposition, for these seemingly insignificant insects are capable of causing an enormous loss to the orchard, vineyard, nursery, or field in which they have gained a foothold. It must be remembered that each scale insect, after it has settled on the trunk, branch, or leaf of its particular host plant, virtually turns itself into an automatic pump and extracts the sap which is so vital to the life and growth of the tree. Usually the damage is done before the infestation is discovered, as many of our growers are absolutely without the slightest knowledge of scale insects. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The San Jose Scale and Its Nearest Allies: A Brief Consideration of the Characters Which Distinguish These Closely Related Injurious Scale Insects Suppose that some objects suspected to be San Jose scales have been found upon a fruit tree. The first thing to do is to ascertain whether they are scales (Coccidae) at all. I have known fly marks to be taken for Coccidae, and occasionally the lenticels on the young growth of trees are supposed to be scale insects by those whose experience ought to have taught them better. It is really remarkable how the lenticels on cotton wood twigs in the Mesilla Valley, N. Mex., resemble a scale prevalent in that locality, Aspidiotus juglans-regiw var. albus. From a short distance the deception would be complete but for the fact that the lenticels are arranged at approximately equal distances from one another and not massed like scale insects. Still more like coccids are certain fungi; I have on occasion been obliged to use a lens to ascertain which I had before me. At Mesilla, N. Mex., I found on the dead wood of an apple tree a fungus which closely resembled the second stage, or immature male scales of the San Jose scale. This fungus was kindly identified for me by Mr. J. B. Ellis as the cytispora stage of Valsa ambiens Persoon. It is presumed that no entomologist will be misled for more than a moment by lenticels or fungi, but for those who are not entomologists it may be recommended to scrape the object with the finger nail or a knife blade, when, if it is a scale insect, it will readily come away, leaving at most only a pale film. Granting now that we certainly have a scale insect before us, it is to be learned whether it belongs to the subfamily Diaspinae. A mealybug has no scale - only some mealy or cottony secretion; a Lecanium or shield scale is itself the scale that is, the insect becomes hardened and scale - like, but has no scale separable from its body. But the Diaspinae are small soft insects, in the adult 9 stage without legs and unable to move, which secrete a scale separate from themselves, much like the shell of an oyster. With a lens it is easy to make out the insect and its scale, the latter having first been overturned with the point of a knife. The scale, it is further seen, carries the exuviae of the two first stages, or only one if it be a male. Now, then, if we are sure that we have a Diaspine is it an Aspidiotus - the genus of the San Jose scale! In Aspidiotus the female scales are round, or nearly so, and the male scales vary from round to oval, according to the species, but are always of a similar texture to those of the female. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The California Species of Mealy Bugs The systematic literature dealing with certain groups of the Coccidae or scale insects is extremely unsatisfactory, this condition being especially pronounced in the case of those groups commonly called the soft scales. The present author has stated in an earlier paper that of the nearly 100 species of mealy bugs thus far described from North America, including some 35 from California, not more than three or four are recognizable at all on the basis of the published descriptions if taken apart from their typical host and their type locality, nor at the time of the present writing does this statement need any extensive modification. A few species have been described since the statement was originally made and to some of these it may not apply, but so far as the species known at that time are concerned, the additional claim may safely be made that even under the optimum conditions cited, the identification of many of our species can not be accomplished with reasonable certainty. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of lnsectopedia, a powerful exploration of loss, grief, endurance, and the absences that permeate the present. Unconformities are gaps in the geological record, physical evidence of breaks in time. For Hugh Raffles, these holes in history are also fissures in feeling, knowledge, memory, and understanding. In this endlessly inventive, riveting book, Raffles enters these gaps, drawing together threads of geology, history, literature, philosophy, and ethnography to trace the intimate connections between personal loss and world historical events, and to reveal the force of absence at the core of contemporary life. Through deeply researched explorations of Neolithic stone circles, Icelandic lava, mica from a Nazi concentration camp, petrified whale blubber in Svalbard, the marble prized by Manhattan's Lenape, and a huge Greenlandic meteorite that arrived in New York City along with six Inuit adventurers in 1897, Raffles shows how unconformities unceasingly incite human imagination and investigation yet refuse to conform, heal, or disappear. A journey across eons and continents, The Book of Unconformities is also a journey through stone: this most solid, ancient, and enigmatic of materials, it turns out, is as lively, capricious, willful, and indifferent as time itself.

Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book A stunningly original exploration of the ties that bind us to the beautiful, ancient, astoundingly accomplished, largely unknown, and unfathomably different species with whom we share the world. For as long as humans have existed, insects have been our constant companions. Yet we hardly know them, not even the ones we’re closest to: those that eat our food, share our beds, and live in our homes. Organizing his book alphabetically, Hugh Raffles weaves together brief vignettes, meditations, and extended essays, taking the reader on a mesmerizing exploration of history and science, anthropology and travel, economics, philosophy, and popular culture. Insectopedia shows us how insects have triggered our obsessions, stirred our passions, and beguiled our imaginations.

Book excerpt: Coastal exposures of the Santa Cruz Formation in southern Patagonia have been a fertile ground for recovery of Early Miocene vertebrates for more than 100 years. This volume presents a comprehensive compilation of important mammalian groups which continue to thrive today. It includes the most recent fossil finds as well as important new interpretations based on ten years of fieldwork by the authors. A key focus is placed on the paleoclimate and paleoenvironment during the time of deposition in the Middle Miocene Climatic Optimum (MMCO) between twenty and fifteen million years ago. The authors present the first reconstruction of what climatic conditions were like and present important new evidence of the geochronological age, habits and community structures of fossil bird and mammal species. Academic researchers and graduate students in paleontology, paleobiology, paleoecology, stratigraphy, climatology and geochronology will find this a valuable source of information about this fascinating geological formation.
