Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you’re looking for beautiful scenery filled with lush greenery and azure waters, this is not the place. Rather, this book looks at the most beautiful aspect of a place: the lives of its people. Southeast Asia, a region internationally recognized synonymously with ASEAN, consists of ten countries: Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, Brunei, and Singapore. In the blink of an eye, 10 years have passed since author's first book hit the shelves. author has since developed an appreciation for ASEAN and their collective efforts for the well-being of the people in each country; Singapore’s efforts to lead the region in its development have also been an immense source of pride. The region’s growth and resilience have once again inspired the author to pick up his dusty old camera, and to tell a story through his photographs. This time, the author hopes to capture and present the candid livelihoods of each region’s people. Through this, the author hopes to introduce to the world the wonderous, ecstatic region that is ASEAN, filled with colours and stories. Rather than one single book, the author plans on releasing a collection of 10, one for each country. And each country’s edition shall be published during the annual “ASEAN Summit”, which is held across the 10 countries. Last but not least, the author plans to save Singapore’s edition for last. Knowing Singapore best out of the 10 countries, the author will be presenting Singapore in the most unique and special way possible, which shall remain a secret for now. Hence, the author invite reader to stay tuned, and look forward to the final edition patiently with him!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an investigation into aspects of prosody, intonation and the prosody-syntax interface in Totoli, an endangered Austronesian language. With a strongly data-driven approach, the study integrates a combination of experimental evidence from both production and perception with corpus-based evidence through descriptive and inferential statistics. The study takes the prime structuring unit of speech – the Intonation Unit – as its principal unit of investigation. It presents a thorough description of the IU, develops an intonational model of it, and investigates the syntactic units it contains. The author argues that the data is best analysed by assuming recursive embedding of Intonation Units into Compound Intonation Units. This research represents a significant advancement in our understanding of the nature of prosodic systems found in the languages of the region and in intonational systems in general. It is one of the few investigations into the intonation of Austronesian languages and its analytical proposals are relevant both to prosodic theory and to phonological typology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of the Case Studies in Cultural Anthropology series, edited by George Spindler and Janice E. Stockard, Sharyn Graham brings us CHALLENGING GENDER NORMS: THE FIVE GENDERS OF INDONESIA. This case study explores the Bugis ethnic group, native to the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, that recognizes five gender categories rather than the two acknowledged in most societies. The Bugis acknowledge three sexes (female, male, hermaphrodite), four genders (women, men, calabai, and calalai), and a fifth meta-gender group, the bissu. This ethnography presents individuals' stories, opinions and deliberations, grounding discussions of how gendered identities are constructed in a rapidly changing cultural milieu. The rich ethnographic material contained in this book challenges two types of Western theory ? queer theory, which tends to focus on sexuality, and feminist theory, which tends to focus on social gender enactment. Neither theory is well-equipped for articulating the complexities of multiple gender identities and a multifarious gender system. By unraveling social negotiations and examining both individual embodiment and the impact of global forces on localized identities, the book proposes a new theory of gender which incorporates appreciation of variously gendered subjectivities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are probably no other people on earth to whom the image of the ‘stone-age’ is so persistently attached than the inhabitants of the island of New Guinea, which is divided into independent Papua New Guinea and the western part of the island, known today as Papua and West Papua. From ‘Stone-Age’ to ‘Real-Time’ examines the forms of agency, frictions and anxieties the current moment generates in West Papua, where the persistent ‘stone-age’ image meets the practices and ideologies of the ‘real-time’ – a popular expression referring to immediate digital communication. The volume is thus essentially occupied with discourses of time and space and how they inform questions of hierarchy and possibilities for equality. Papuans are increasingly mobile, and seeking to rework inherited ideas, institutions and technologies, while also coming up against palpable limits on what can be imagined or achieved, secured or defended. This volume investigates some of these trajectories for the cultural logics and social or political structures that shape them. The chapters are highly ethnographic, based on in-depth research conducted in diverse spaces within and beyond Papua. These contributions explore topics ranging from hip hop to HIV/ AIDS to historicity, filling much-needed conceptual and ethnographic lacunae in the study of West Papua.
