Book Synopsis Say What I Am Called by : Dieter Bitterli
Download or read book Say What I Am Called written by Dieter Bitterli and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2009-05-09 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps the most enigmatic cultural artifacts that survive from the Anglo-Saxon period are the Old English riddle poems that were preserved in the tenth century Exeter Book manuscript. Clever, challenging, and notoriously obscure, the riddles have fascinated readers for centuries and provided crucial insight into the period. In Say What I Am Called, Dieter Bitterli takes a fresh look at the riddles by examining them in the context of earlier Anglo-Latin riddles. Bitterli argues that there is a vigorous common tradition between Anglo-Latin and Old English riddles and details how the contents of the Exeter Book emulate and reassess their Latin predecessors while also expanding their literary and formal conventions. The book also considers the ways in which convention and content relate to writing in a vernacular language. A rich and illuminating work that is as intriguing as the riddles themselves, Say What I Am Called is a rewarding study of some of the most interesting works from the Anglo-Saxon period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Out of long involvement with adherents of many religions, Shenk dares to assert that one can be profoundly respectful of people of other faith traditions and still retain the integrity of one's own faith. -- from the Foreword by Wilbert R. Shenk Can we respect other religions and still view Christ as normative for all? Yes, says Calvin Shenk, Professor Emeritus of Religion at Eastern Mennonite University. How? Answers are not simple. However, biblical perspectives on religions provide reliable starting points for the journey. And placing Christ at the center of the quest yields clarity amid complexity. For Christians, candid commitment to the uniqueness of Christ is to be accomplished by the integrity of Christ. This leads to loving witness that includes truly dialoguing with persons committed to other religions. 'Who Do You Say That I Am?' assesses contemporary theologies of religious pluralism as well as several of the world's major religions, yet remains accessible to all thoughtful Christians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who are you, Lord, that I might seek to know you? Who are you, Lord, that I might long to love you? Who are you, Lord, that I might dare to follow you? Jesus’s evocative question to the disciples at Caesarea Philippi, “Who do you say that I AM?” elicits a bold Christological confession from Simon Peter, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God.” Divinely revealed, Simon’s assertive testimony sets in motion the center and the witness of Christian faith. Jesus’s direct question posed to the disciples reverberates even now as it probes the hearts and minds of all believers and nonbelievers. “Who do you say that I AM?” “Who Do You Say that I AM?” explores the mystery of Jesus of Nazareth through an examination of salient divine names used of him as revealed in Scripture. These titular clues will serve to broaden the reader’s understanding of this Jesus “whom even the wind and sea obey.” It is the author’s hope that its readers will discover the profound meaning of Jesus’s question in their own lives and dare to answer the saving question, “Who do you say that the Son of Man is?”

Book Synopsis Who Do You Say I Am? by : George Kalantzis
Download or read book Who Do You Say I Am? written by George Kalantzis and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-03-06 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human existence is a bodily existence. A first principle of historic Christianity has been that Jesus assumed our humanity and everything essential to it in order that God may redeem all of our existence. Christ is the revelation of God and the revelation of true humanity. As we seek to understand our embodied experiences of the world and one another we do so in light of the embodied life of Jesus Christ. Jesus’s humanity shows us what it means to live an embodied human life rightly and how we, as embodied human beings, can relate to the world around us. In this book we invite readers to explore with us why the humanity of Jesus is central to the Christian understanding of community, society, salvation, and life with God. Over the span of these ten chapters this book draws from biblical, historic, and cultural discussions as it enters into the breadth of the significance of the humanity of Jesus and explores how the reality of the Incarnation challenges and redeems our broken social structures, racial and ethnic divisions, economic systems, and sexuality.
Book Synopsis Echoes of Jesus by : Jonathan Peter Clerke
Download or read book Echoes of Jesus written by Jonathan Peter Clerke and published by . This book was released on 2019-05-08 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling books have taken the view that the oldest New Testament documents paint a very different picture to later copies. Others are of the opinion that the original gospel accounts were never intended to be historically accurate. Many people assume that the bias of the original New Testament authors distorted their recollections of Jesus, and Jesus' words were not put into written form for several decades, allowing distortion to occur. What would you say? What do you believe and why? Were Jesus' words recorded accurately by the gospel writers during Jesus' life & the making & copying of the New Testament? This highly readable journey of discovery considers gospel textual criticism, Christian historiography, archaeology, literacy & more. See evidence for the reliability of the recounting of Jesus as found in the Bible. This Christian apologetic book provides evidence in an engaging manner, following along a logical journey of discovery. When you've purchased and read this book you will: - understand how literate and historically aware the ancient civilisations were - appreciate how it was possible for the first disciples to accurately record Jesus' life and teachings - have a highly readable explanation of early Greek New Testament documents and know what they have to say about accuracy in copying - know the content and credibility of non-Christian ancient literature that comment on Jesus and the first Christians.
Book Synopsis The Complete Works of C. H. Spurgeon, Volume 54 by : Spurgeon, Charles H.

This book was released on with total page 924 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 54 Sermons 3073-3124 Charles Spurgeon (19 June 1834 – 31 January 1892) is one of the church’s most famous preachers and Christianity’s foremost prolific writers. Called the “Prince of Preachers,” he was one of England's most notable ministers for most of the second half of the nineteenth century, and he still remains highly influential among Christians of different denominations today. His sermons have spread all over the world, and his many printed works have been cherished classics for decades. In his lifetime, Spurgeon preached to more than 10 million people, often up to ten times each week. He was the pastor of the congregation of the New Park Street Chapel (later the Metropolitan Tabernacle) in London for 38 years. He was an inexhaustible author of various kinds of works including sermons, commentaries, an autobiography, as well as books on prayer, devotionals, magazines, poetry, hymns and more. Spurgeon was known to produce powerful sermons of penetrating thought and divine inspiration, and his oratory and writing skills held his audiences spellbound. Many Christians have discovered Spurgeon's messages to be among the best in Christian literature. Edward Walford wrote in Old and New London: Volume 6 (1878) quoting an article from the Times regarding one of Spurgeon’s meetings at Surrey: “Fancy a congregation consisting of 10,000 souls, streaming into the hall, mounting the galleries, humming, buzzing, and swarming—a mighty hive of bees—eager to secure at first the best places, and, at last, any place at all. After waiting more than half an hour—for if you wish to have a seat you must be there at least that space of time in advance—Mr. Spurgeon ascended his tribune. To the hum, and rush, and trampling of men, succeeded a low, concentrated thrill and murmur of devotion, which seemed to run at once, like an electric current, through the breast of every one present, and by this magnetic chain the preacher held us fast bound for about two hours. It is not my purpose to give a summary of his discourse. It is enough to say of his voice, that its power and volume are sufficient to reach every one in that vast assembly; of his language, that it is neither high-flown nor homely; of his style, that it is at times familiar, at times declamatory, but always happy, and often eloquent; of his doctrine, that neither the 'Calvinist' nor the 'Baptist' appears in the forefront of the battle which is waged by Mr. Spurgeon with relentless animosity, and with Gospel weapons, against irreligion, cant, hypocrisy, pride, and those secret bosom-sins which so easily beset a man in daily life; and to sum up all in a word, it is enough to say of the man himself, that he impresses you with a perfect conviction of his sincerity.” More than a hundred years after his death, Charles Spurgeon’s legacy continues to effectively inspire the church around the world. For this reason, Delmarva Publications has chosen to publish the complete works of Charles Spurgeon.
