Book Synopsis The New Blue Music by : Richard J. Ripani
Download or read book The New Blue Music written by Richard J. Ripani and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2009-09-23 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rhythm & blues emerged from the African American community in the late 1940s to become the driving force in American popular music over the next half-century. Although sometimes called “doo-wop,” “soul,” “funk,” “urban contemporary,” or “hip-hop,” R&B is actually an umbrella category that includes all of these styles and genres. It is in fact a modern-day incarnation of a musical tradition that stretches back to nineteenth-century America, and even further to African beginnings. The New Blue Music: Changes in Rhythm & Blues, 1950-1999 traces the development of R&B from 1950 to 1999 by closely analyzing the top twenty-five songs of each decade. The music of artists as wide-ranging as Louis Jordan; John Lee Hooker; Ray Charles; James Brown; Earth, Wind & Fire; Michael Jackson; Public Enemy; Mariah Carey; and Usher takes center stage as the author illustrates how R&B has not only retained its traditional core style, but has also experienced a “re-Africanization” over time. By investigating musical elements of form, style, and content in R&B—and offering numerous musical examples—the book shows the connection between R&B and other forms of American popular and religious music, such as spirituals, ragtime, blues, jazz, country, gospel, and rock 'n' roll. With this evidence in hand, the author hypothesizes the existence of an even larger musical “super-genre” which he labels “The New Blue Music.”

Book excerpt: THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER What would you do with one last year? Susan Spencer-Wendel was determined to laugh instead of cry. In June 2011, Susan Spencer-Wendel learned she had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) - Lou Gehrig's disease - an irreversible condition that systematically destroys the nerves that power the muscles. She was 44-years-old, with three young children, and she had only one year of health remaining. She decided to live that year with joy. She left her job as a journalist and spent time with her family. She built a meeting place for friends in her backyard. And she took seven trips with the seven most important people in her life. As her health declined, Susan journeyed to the Yukon, Hungary, the Bahamas, and Cyprus. She went to the beach with her sons and to Kleinfeld's bridal shop in New York City with her teenage daughter, Marina, for a glimpse of the wedding she would never attend. She also wrote this book. No longer able to walk or even lift her arms, she tapped it out letter by letter on her iPhone using only her right thumb, the last finger still working. And yet Until I Say Good-Bye is not angry or bitter. It is sad in parts - how could it not be? - but it is filled with Susan's optimism, joie de vivre and sens of humour. It is a book that, like Susan, will make everyone smile. From a hilarious family Christmas disaster to the decrepit monastery in eastern Cyprus where she rediscovered her heritage, Until I Say Good-Bye is Susan Spencer-Wendel's unforgettable gift to her loved ones and to us: a record of their final experiences together and a reminder that every day is better when it is lived with joy.

Book Synopsis Life As It Happens Devotional by : Crawford G. Clark
Download or read book Life As It Happens Devotional written by Crawford G. Clark and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2024-02-22 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As all of us know, life has its ups and downs. In many ways life truly is a rollercoaster. A rollercoaster goes up, comes down, goes around curves, enters the dark at times, twists, and in some cases, goes backwards. I think that using a rollercoaster is a great example that can describe life perfectly. How is one able to navigate all the ups and downs, twists, and turns, as well as the darkness that is experienced on occasions? The key, I believe, is a faith in a living God. This living God allows Himself to be known through the person of Jesus Christ. This devotional is slightly different than most devotionals. The devotionals contained in this volume were written over a period of time and as the current events were taking place. As you will experience, there are numerous events mentioned that were part of our lives, some that may be distant to you and some that occurred daily that you may have been somewhat close. Since I am a sports junkie, you will find several references in this devotional pertaining to sporting events that have taken place. Most of the sporting events refer to the teams in Philadelphia. Each devotion is two pages in length and is written in a way to help you think about your relationship with God. It is my prayer that after completing the reading of this devotional you will find yourself closer to God and understand who He is clearer.

Book Synopsis Prayers for the People by : Rebecca Louise Carter
Download or read book Prayers for the People written by Rebecca Louise Carter and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2019-07-05 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Grieve well and you grow stronger.” Anthropologist Rebecca Louise Carter heard this wisdom over and over while living in post-Katrina New Orleans, where everyday violence disproportionately affects Black communities. What does it mean to grieve well? How does mourning strengthen survivors in the face of ongoing threats to Black life? Inspired by ministers and guided by grieving mothers who hold birthday parties for their deceased sons, Prayers for the People traces the emergence of a powerful new African American religious ideal at the intersection of urban life, death, and social and spiritual change. Carter frames this sensitive ethnography within the complex history of structural violence in America—from the legacies of slavery to free but unequal citizenship, from mass incarceration and overpolicing to social abandonment and the unequal distribution of goods and services. And yet Carter offers a vision of restorative kinship by which communities of faith work against the denial of Black personhood as well as the violent severing of social and familial bonds. A timely directive for human relations during a contentious time in America’s history, Prayers for the People is also a hopeful vision of what an inclusive, nonviolent, and just urban society could be.
