Download or read book Harvard's Secret Court written by William Wright and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2006-10-31 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2002, a researcher for The Harvard Crimson came across a restricted archive labeled "Secret Court Files, 1920." The mystery he uncovered involved a tragic scandal in which Harvard University secretly put a dozen students on trial for homosexuality and then systematically and persistently tried to ruin their lives. In May of 1920, a freshman suspended from Harvard committed suicide. The note he left behind revealed his secret life as part of a circle of homosexual students. The resulting witch hunt remains one of the most shameful episodes in the history of America's premier university: Harvard conducted its investigation in secrecy. Several students committed suicide; others were subjected to an ongoing effort on the part of Harvard to destroy their reputations. This book is an indictment of the human toll of intolerance and the horrors of injustice that can result when a powerful institution loses its balance.--From publisher description.

Book Synopsis Prayer: God’s Invitation to Relationship by : Paul Holt
Download or read book Prayer: God’s Invitation to Relationship written by Paul Holt and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2019-02-08 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you are inquisitive about prayer or are dissatisfied with your prayer life, Prayer: God’s Invitation to Relationship can direct you toward contemporary and historical accounts that will show you how God’s kingdom grows as people pray, transforming individuals and situations. Through these explorations and a number of practical tools, you too can build a prayer habit and kick-start your prayer life. In Prayer: God’s Invitation to Relationship, author Paul Holt explores individual prayer as a means of responding to God’s call to connect with Him as Father and Friend. Beginning with a review of Jesus’s instructions to his disciples about praying (“whenever you pray”), Holt draws upon a wide range of Christian source material to illustrate individual prayer as a means of building a relationship with God. He draws attention to the God who longs for his people to pray so that he can bring blessing. Four threads of our growing relationship through prayer are identified, including openness and honesty, attentive listening, partnership and transformation.

Book Synopsis O'odham Creation and Related Events by : Donald M. Bahr
Download or read book O'odham Creation and Related Events written by Donald M. Bahr and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origin stories of the O’odham (Pima) Indians of Arizona are renowned for their beauty and complexity but have been collected in only a handful of books. This volume—the third full O’odham telling of ancientness to appear in print—brings together dozens of stories collected in 1927 by anthropologist Ruth Benedict during her only visit to the Pimas. Never before published, they helped inspire Benedict to write her groundbreaking book Patterns of Culture. The Pimas represented a way of life that Benedict at first called “Dionysian” after hearing the stories, narratives, songs, and oratory collected from various tellers during her three-month stay. The oral literature concerns the creation of the world and its transformations over time, the creation of the O’odham people, and other cultural traditions. Featuring a pair of man-gods, a female monster born of woman, and a conquest of Pimas by Pimas, they serve to mark the O’odham as a people distinct from their neighbors near and far. The present volume contains more stories than any other source of Pima tales, plus more of the songs and orations that accompanied a telling. It includes “The Rafter,” a host of ancillary stories, numerous Coyote tales, and additional speeches tied to the narratives of ancientness. One long story, “The Feud,” found only in this collection, shows similarities to the Maya Popol Vuh. Donald Bahr, a preeminent authority on the O’odham, has not only clarified the text but has also written an introduction that provides the background to the collection and analyzes Benedict’s probable reasons for never having published it. He has also included a previously unpublished text by Benedict, “Figures of Speech among the Pima.” O’odham Creation and Related Events represents an invaluable sourcebook of a people’s oral literature as well as a tribute to a singular scholar’s dedication and vision.
